Give Opera 12 beta a new look and feel

Themes are a new way to skin your browser. With the new implementation, anyone can style Opera just the way they want. Check out some of the themes and learn how to make your own on Dev.Opera.

Opera 12 themes
Faster and more stable

With 64-bit support made to Opera 12, startup times and page loading is faster than ever before. We now run plugins (such as Flash) as separate processes - this makes Opera a lot more stable.

Camera and Device APIs

Do you have a camera on your computer? By giving Opera 12 beta access to your camera, websites will be able to snap a picture of you directly - instead of uploading a profile picture of yourself. Check out some of demos on Shiny Demos, such as:

More features in Opera 12 beta
  • Support for the Do Not Track header
  • CSS3 Animations and Transitions
  • HTML5 Drag and Drop
  • Support for CORS — not the beer, but rather Cross-Origin Resource Sharing
  • Opt-in hardware acceleration and WebGL

Not by default.

How are the new Themes and old Skins going to interact? Do you plan to combine those two features as well? Or make them happily tag along somehow?

From an ux designer perspective, huge kudos on the decision to "cut out" Widgets and Unite. I hope that some of their functionality can be brought to Extensions to skyrocket its functionality, but otherwise it's a great step towards a less clustered and more comprehensible product.

lchiang Thursday, April 26, 2012 9:33:40 AM

Oh~ No~ Themes!?
Are you gonna obsolete SKIN too?

timmi Thursday, April 26, 2012 9:42:53 AM

@Aleksander

Native pages in the browser

What if webpages could be laid out like a book with pages that can format automatically to the screen size? What if it only took a few lines of CSS code? The project was formerly known as Opera Reader, but we are opening it up for standardization as CSS3 Generated Content for Paged Media. You can try it for yourself in Opera 12.

But there is no Opera Reader in the actual beta. Already a german news site has also misread this and are writing that opera reader is in this beta.

Skins and themes will live happily alongside each other. Themes is just lots easier from a designer perspective and way better when it comes to compatibility between operating system and Opera versions.

Taneltankest Thursday, April 26, 2012 11:17:10 AM

… and how can I "uninstall" a theme to restore my default view? Found no reference from the Appearance dialog.

Lot many people have commented to keep the Unite apps, and lot other agree too.
Is Opera listening????

wow,great job!

Fr0sT Friday, April 27, 2012 7:06:01 AM

Wonderful! Congratulation to all Opera team! )))

1. Noticed visual glitches with menu bar on WinXP SP2 with standard skin. With My Classic Skin Opera 10.00 Turbo they're gone. Reported as DSK-362414
2. opera:config doesn't load info on options ("No information could be found for this item." for every option). Opera 11 loads it without problems.
3. Themes?? You should call them "Speed dial Wallpapers" as it's the only thing they change. No buttons or icons or UI touched. In the current state they're useless, imho. I also have been very frightened when I hadn't seen an option to change a SKIN. Luckily the very ability remained so I just visited http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins and instaled a skin from there.
4. New Mail/RSS UI is nice, but still no Trash if only RSS are used (DSK-338993).

Testing further

nilskidoo Saturday, April 28, 2012 8:37:40 PM

I downloaded and the ONLY difference thus far is that all of my news feeds on Portal are frozen from yesterday. I reposted and double-checked all links. And now I cannot uninstall Next without taking all of my Opera with it. WTF.

leojh44 Monday, April 30, 2012 1:03:33 AM

Changes i see:
-Speed Dial is much cleaner, with white border removed.
-No Speak command

Changes i want to see:
-make the progress bar view default as "show inside address bar"
-extension frames disappear when the progress bar is shown (page loads while extension frame is open)
make extension buttons visible all the time when using "show inside address bar" mode

nilskidoo Monday, April 30, 2012 1:55:56 AM

All of the feeds I imported to Portal days earlier are still frozen. I finally just had to uninstall Next after AVG pulled out so many tracking cookies.

Nothing but bad experiences. And Portal feeds are STILL FROZEN!

Long story short, Opera should not throw away old stuffs, but add new ones. I swear to you Opera, when you remove those features, I'll move to Mozilla Firefox. Pronto!

Unite is Opera, so the airbag is the car.

good but you should improve print preview page. Scaling options must be available at the same page. And i must see the changes easily. It is very bad in opera.

Vasilis Ilioglouvas35 Tuesday, May 1, 2012 10:50:24 AM

finally! i hope all the bugs have been fixed too! good job guys

Still the beta browser doesn't work with www.biodigitalhuman.com which uses advanced hardware based acceleration for graphics that the browser supports WebGL. Looks like I will stick with Opera 11.62 as it has Unite feature that I use.

Will wait for next release if they dont try to fix hardware acceleration support.
