Gaming in Opera Mobile

Being able to play games right inside Opera is something we're pretty excited about as it is. But when we discovered that a member of the Opera community has created a free point-and-click adventure game, we wanted to share it with you right away!
Called The Field of Kings, (it's a tribute to 1990s Japanese game King's Field, among other games), it can be played on a PS Vita or PSP device, as well as through Opera Mobile on phones or tablets running Android.
It's set in a magical, mysterious world populated by characters ranging from fairytale royalty to bare-bones skeletons. Even casual players will have fun exploring the game, but those of you with more advanced gaming or tech skills can check it out and give the developer your feedback.
Enjoy!

So it's basically a point & click adventure game that looks like an old-school RPG done with plain old HTML+CSS+JS.
Not a bad effort, but not really a technical showcase for Opera Mobile, this would run in any other modern mobile browser.

Absolutely. That's how I made the video! You can load either the PSP or smart phone port to your browser. The resolution would be small, but its definitely playable.

You're absolutely right that the game is just HTML and Javascript. I would like to point out that the game doesn't work in just any new browser though.
The animations are all animated GIFs (not flash) and a lot of browsers (including Opera MINI) take shortcuts and don't display the images correctly. (you'll get a still shot of a JPG substitute instead)
I have an Android 2.2 phone, Galaxy Precedent. (if you guess Straight Talk, you guessed right) I've tried the game in the following browser apps: Dolphin HD, Opera Mini, Skyfire, Astro, Maxthon, Angel, Boat, Galapagos and Ninesky. Opera Mobile is the only browser that supports the game on my phone.
(There's no Firefox, Chrome, etc. because those apps are for 4.0 phones. The game could work with them, but I don't have that type of phone)
The rest of the browsers are stuck on the first frame of the very first image, the title screen. (since it fades FROM black, all you see is black)

I can take full credit for the music. Actually, I'm a musician first... probably why the only thing I know is Javascript and HTML. The trees were designed by my good friend Todd.
( ^ - ^)
Once again guys, thanks again for the compliments. I hope you enjoy the game!

I'm on vacation and I only have my 3DS, so I tried to play the game on it.
It worked.

Did the sound work ok?
What version did you use - The smart phone version or PSP version?

The game is pretty cool and nostalgic.

I just tested, and the game does work in Firefox Mobile Beta on Android 4.01 (Galaxy S2).
Chrome Mobile Beta has a security restriction with using frames to local urls, so you can only get to the title menu. Manually opening the room .htm files renders them just fine, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work hosted online.

Are the gifs a problem only on the title screen?
You could do the fadein animations using a little javascript or CSS transitions.

No, your comments weren't brash at all! In fact they were quite welcomed! I realize that it wouldn't be cutting edge tech... I mean, the newest programs I used in the making of this game was published in 2006. LOL
In regards to nostalgia, if you look up a Youtube Video of King's Field Additional I or II (also released 2006), you'll see where my approach came from.

Thanks for letting me know! Ever since the downloads were available, the online versions of the PSP and smart phone versions were available as well. I set those up because I thought there would be those who wanted to check out the game, but didn't want do download something that was going to be that many megs. ....and, there are those who have no need for memory cards with that much space, or space at all.

I could do that. I would have to edit every animated GIF frame. (probably several hundred images) I think what would actually be easier (on me) is to make a lo-fi version of the game where all the animated GIFs were replaced with a single frame image. Then even the dinosaur phones could play the game and I could leave my coding alone... in theory.
Still, I don't think I'd work on that right away for several reasons.
1) I'd hate to put that much work into something, and then everyone goes for the standard version instead.
2) I don't know how older phones can understand script. Its possible that I could do all that work and it still wouldn't work on lo-fi phones.

First, the bad. There was a mistake in my coding toward the end of the game. Long story short, it was impossible to get to the last boss the legitimate "beat all the bosses" way. (I tested more the "non-legitimate" way to beating the game. Yes, there's a secret to getting to the last boss very quickly.) The good of the bad news is that it was only accessing the last boss which was flawed. Everything else was fine.
The good news is, I fixed the problem completely. All the files/links/online-game on thefieldofkings.com website are fixed and updated. None of the file sizes changed because it was a simple line of coding that got overlooked. Its all good now.
The bad of the good news is there's no patch so to speak. It requires a re-download, and re-install. My sincere apologies for the inconvenience.
Some more good news, I've had multiple people ask me... how long does it take to beat the game? Well, I decided to find out... and document it.
Here's a video of a The Field of Kings speedrun so to speak. How long it takes from the start of the game, to unlock the seal to The Ineffable King Edward (last boss). Surprisingly, it was just a little over 12 minutes. I'm guessing with beating the boss, assuming you knew exactly what you were doing (much like in this video) it would barely be more than 13-14 minutes to completely beat the game. Be wary of spoilers. This video reveals boss locations and quite a few enemy weak spots.
