How to Search in Opera

Opera Tips and Tricks

Searching in Opera is based on the way most of us browse the web already. You start in one place, and a couple of clicks later, you're in a whole new world!

But you can find more of what you're looking for by using the following search methods:

Look up words in a page

While reading, you might come across an unfamiliar word or phrase in the text of a webpage. To find out more about it, highlight and then right-click the word or phrase. From here you can either look the term up in a dictionary or encyclopedia, translate it into another language, or select a search engine from the drop-down list under "Search with" and continue your research from there.

Customize your searches

If you didn't find the search site(s) you use the most in that list of default search sources in the step above, you can add your own.

Set your default search engines

From the Opera menu, go to Settings -> Preferences and click on the Search tab. From here, you can add new search engines, or edit or delete the default options.

Create a personal search method

  1. Say you are looking for images on blogging or photo-sharing sites like Tumblr or Flickr. Go to the website you want to search from.
  2. In that website's search field, right-click and select "Create Search...".
  3. In the address field of the window that comes up, replace everything after the end of that website's URL with "%s" (the percentage s means "search" in Opera).
  4. Add a keyword, like tm for Tumblr, or fl for Flickr and click OK.
  5. Now try out a search using the keywords you set up. For example, type tm swimming pool or fl Egypt in the search field.

Double clicking the word (which selects the word and brings up the context menu) and then clicking on the search engine is a bit quicker.

confused I've never had to do that when adding a search engine to Opera.

Much quicker way to look up something highlighted is to set some key to "Show popup menu, "Internal Search With"". Then just simply highlight it, tap that key and a menu with all the searches appear. Hold shift while clicking and the search will open in a new tab. Another handy thing I use is to have bound another key to 'Copy & New page & Paste and go' - so If I highlight an address and hit that key, Opera will go to that address, and if some words are highlighted, a search for them will be performed. One thing that has been bothering me for a while is this bug, please take a look at the linked topic.

For certain services, such as bit.ly, you do need to add the "%s", but it is not required for all searches by default.

personalized seraches is one of the best features of opera, i've loved it from long time ago... and the other browsers took time to imitate...
i have like 10 search engines and they all are very handy smile
really opera, your only mistake is not making other people realize how cool you are...
other browsers just abuse from publicity to get some users. opera doesnt even need publicity.
