Opera. Made for Android.

, , ,

Today, we released a beta version of the new Opera for Android. We have a whole set of new and improved features we're excited about. In particular, we'd like you to try out and give your feedback on the following:

Tabs. Better than ever.

From a thumbnail view of tabs to private browsing, Tabs on Android is made for the way you browse the mobile web. It's also even easier to mark tabs as favorites, right in the address field.

Discover. Stay one step ahead.

Get news, the latest cool content and other suggestions with the Discover feature.

Off-Road Mode. All-conditions browsing.

Formerly known as Opera Turbo, Off-Road compresses web pages so you can stay online even when your connection slows down or you're outside your regular network . Off-Road Mode also saves you money on data.

Download Manager. Made better.

With the ability to start, pause, resume and rename files, you can download and keep the movies, music and other media files you want at your convenience.

well done, fingers crossed for a Windows Phone version one day. Good luck with the Android version, I hope it will be a major success.smile

Christophchristoph142 Tuesday, March 5, 2013 8:18:35 AM

What about the iOS version?
Do we get a beta, too?

I'm eagerly awaiting it since we only got Opera Mini so far...

iamadmm Tuesday, March 5, 2013 8:30:51 AM

but need 3 steps to change tab!

micsk Tuesday, March 5, 2013 8:37:05 AM

Great!
Is it possible to access Opera links or my favorites? The "Opera Link" button in the setting pages just seems to be a web view.

timmi Tuesday, March 5, 2013 8:47:11 AM

Anybody discovered how to get back and forward?
Find no buttons for that and swiping from left to right or right to left seems not to work

ClashCityRockerclashcityrocker Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:04:44 AM

The lack of clear Opera Mobile roadmap is putting me off. Whilst my initial impressions of this are good (it's a good catchup to where Chrome on Android is), I NEED the ability to sync data. old Opera Mobile was broken, this doesn't have it (currently), Chrome works well in this regard.

I am prepared to stick with Opera, but only if I know where it's going, if Opera Link is being dropped as a feature, then I don't want to waste 6 months using this and waiting, when I can continue to use Chrome on Android as I do now.

I have no problem with Opera dropping Presto and moving to WebKit, I think it's a good thing, as it will make sites work better, and most users won't even notice the difference. But Opera also needs to change it's attitude. Closed roadmaps are bad, users invest in a browser, changing a browser is as traumatic as changing banks. We need to know if Opera is going to be in the same place as where I want my browser to be.

Cristiancristianer Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:12:22 AM

I like it. yes

greatWhiteshark Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:24:53 AM

Very good browser. the following can be improved:
1. cant import my opera mini bookmarks. or speeddials into opera with opera link. please fix this.
2. when accessing gmail i still see the default mobile view and have to change over manually to basic html view. please fix this so that gmails's new view can be seen too.
3. opera still doesnt show the new facebook mobile view that other browsers do. please fix this.

Adoxographist Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:48:15 AM

Not as responsive as opera mobile. Bit of a lag opening tabs and scrolling from time to time.
It's only a beta so please incorporate opera link into the future. And maybe opera notes.

Sami Serolaserola Tuesday, March 5, 2013 9:50:51 AM

Interesting... sherlock Not convinced yet, but lets see how it gets improved.

Jérémie Durandjeremiedurand Tuesday, March 5, 2013 10:24:45 AM

Not compatible with Android 2.2 ?

D1sasterp1ece Tuesday, March 5, 2013 10:45:30 AM

No bookmarks? o.O

ouzowtfouzoWTF Tuesday, March 5, 2013 10:53:00 AM

Seems quite good, but some things should be improved.

- Opera button is too big and uses too much space which should be used by the address bar
- as the "Discover"-feature seem to be some kind of rss-feed, I would like to set for myself what feeds from what pages I want to see
- the menu shows me, that there were 97% traffic savings, but offroad-mode was not even once activated
- like sirnh1 said there should be the option "don't use off-road while using wifi" again
- on desktop pages there is no word wrap anymore!!!
- when address bar is highlighted, the protocol should be shown too, so that it could be copied
- when I'm on the speed dial page and push the back button, Opera should minimize/close itself (regardless if I used the tab for surfing before!)
- the "new tab" button looks out of place and has the speed dial logo instead of a "+"-sign or anything
- when pasting an url in the adress bar I can not confirm it. In Opera mobile I could change the url, bacause the keyboard was shown. A "paste and go" would be even cooler.

no that's already the function of Android home button, leave back button to history...!

I haven't noticed it, it's like it's the smallest possible already in Android's standards.

How about whenever I do 'long press'(= keep the button pressed for 2-3 seconds), opera will ask if you want to exit the browser. If you just press it for a second or so, you go to the previous page and when there is no previous page, it exists too?

Richard Arthurarthric Tuesday, March 5, 2013 12:02:25 PM

Really quick but 2 big problemes:
_lack of opera link
_tabs, 3 steps now
Without This, multifunction like the PC version bigsmile

timmi Tuesday, March 5, 2013 1:19:04 PM

Ah very cool, just discovered the HTML5 video pause button in the notifications. Very cool.
But YouTube makes some problems with the HTML5 player, I cannot get out of fullscreen.

Why "Off-Road" instead of the more clear to understand "Turbo"?!

Joshua PhelpsJoshuaPhelps Tuesday, March 5, 2013 3:55:55 PM

I'm actually very impressed with the update! It works like a charm on my Nexus 7!

Vlad Paulvlad74paul Tuesday, March 5, 2013 4:24:42 PM

Fail, have a lot of bugs. I jumped out from my phone this beta trash.doh

First impression: Missing opera link. Please add it.

MossMan Tuesday, March 5, 2013 4:40:57 PM

Re-posting from desktop blog:

First impressions:

- White. So much white. I hate white UI - restless on the eyes (same opinion about the current desktop UI, as it happens - always preferred the Windows Classic look which matched my calm blue default colours).

- The bar is too thick... lots of wasted pixel padding and an over-large "O" taking up precious space. At the same time, the address bar is too short to be useful (e.g. at the moment I only see [https://link.opera.com/s] - so different pages in the same domain will never be distinguished).

- Link doesn't do anything useful yet... just accesses the MyOpera Link page but you have to go through settings(!?). Navigating those bookmarks in the Webkit browser is horrible. Local bookmarks seem to be intentionally absent from the actual browser UI! Weird...

- The speed dial thumbnail created from BBC news is a white square with grey newspaper text on it - how am I supposed to identify BBC from that?

- Discover... no thank you.

- No desktop mode in yuck "off road" yuck. Also desktop mode now buggers around with the standard layout. I presume the current "Turbo when not on WiFi" will become an option... manually switching will be a pain in the arse.

- Messy and unintuitive interface, IMO. I know I'll get used to it but I found myself randomly pressing things 'cause I wasn't sure how it would respond and had to figure out certain functions multiple times. Was surprised to find gestures (swiping) didn't do anything (expected left and right to be back and forward, for example).

So far... nothing impressive, although the zooming seems quite smooth.

I need the word wrap! Best feature of Opera Mobile...
Need sync...

Other than that, thanks smile

FataL Tuesday, March 5, 2013 4:48:08 PM

My impressions: http://my.opera.com/FataL/blog/2013/03/05/opera-mobile-14-beta-testing
Everything was already sent to devs.

MossMan Tuesday, March 5, 2013 4:49:57 PM

Just tried BBC news (desktop) on the old browser and it looks SO MUCH BETTER! In fact, the Webkit browser kept crashing and showing me a stupid cat instead of the page... rolleyes

ouzowtfouzoWTF Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:02:41 PM

I can not define where to save my download files anymore?!?!
That was the best feature for me the other browsers did not have!

Also the native copy, paste, select all options for text are not available. The Opera options for this are hidden when I select too much text (//edit:it seems to only happen in form fields)

Muzer Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:43:45 PM

Screw everyone who decided to switch to Webkit. It's nowhere near as good as Presto, and you don't even bother to come out and mention the change in this blog post. You disgust me.

ytg Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:52:56 PM

No Opera Link support? I could just use the stock browser then.

amperecz Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:58:05 PM

why it's not compatible with google nexus 10?

let's see how opera would change

This awsell. Not a huge thing, but I keep creating private tabs just to get the dark UI. An option to change the UI from light to dark (black/white) would be appreciated.

But I think Opera is back on track with this browser.

Love this one heart

And I like the discover page you've added. And the new speed dial layout.

Is this already using WebKit?

stshepard01 Wednesday, March 6, 2013 7:52:03 AM

The beta is ok, but it's missing the one feature that was what made opera great on small screens, the test wrap function. without this function it no more useful than Dolphin, Chrome or the built in android browser. I'm hoping this is just something that is missing in the beta release and not something that is related to the webkit rendering engine. Knowing that this new version is coming I loaded up Firefox, since it does not use webkit I have found that it to has a text wrap function and for that reason may become my new go to browser on small screens. The beta does seem to be fast and compatible with more websites now, so that's a plus, and I do like the clean look of the UI as well. Just please try to bring back the text wrap function if possible. smile

Aleksander AasAleksander Wednesday, March 6, 2013 9:40:00 AM

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback. Remember that this is just a beta, however all your feedback is hugely appreciated.

I've taken a note about the lack of Link, various UI suggestions and download manager improvements among other things.

As for a open roadmap I don't think I'll be able to share much in that regard right now.

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, March 6, 2013 10:48:54 AM

I, of course, have a few feature requests and seem to have missed the boat by a few minutes. Oh well, Al get back here!!!

1) Downloads. The ability to set a different download folder would be nice as would the ability to toggle choosing each time. Both in tandem would provide a better interface for downloading.

2) The ability to turn off the Discover tab would be nice. It's a nice feature for casual and social browsers, so should be on by default, but some of us like a more traditional experience. Also, the use of a button on the menu to get to the Discover tab is extraneous.

3) The History tab should also be toggleable. While we're at it, being able to clear the history from the History tab would be nice. Again, the button on the drop down menu to get to History is unneeded.

4) The spaces used by these buttons would be best reassigned to things like Opera Bookmarks (most people have far too many to make the Speed Dial interface anything more than a hindrance) and System Bookmarks, and

5) The topbar needs to be toggleable, perhaps with the ability to bring it up and drop it again from a press of the menu key or a user-specified hardware button.

6) When there is only one tab open, the Tabs button should automatically open a new tab for the user rather than taking you to the zoomed out tabs view with a secondary button. Also, a setting to define whether default tab opening that way opens a private or regular tab.

7) Navigation. The option to pull up an Opera Mini/Mobile style navigation bar at the bottom of the screen would be a massive bonus for legacy users.

8) The speed dial page would be more useful, and fit with a toggleable topbar better, if there was the option to drop a search bar on the top.

9) All browsers need the ability to run fullscreen and hide the status bar.

Apart from that, not bad at all. I can see where buying Skyfire paid off and also a better future for the browser. Hell, it even works fully with this site which is something Opera Mini and Mobile haven't done for a long time.

Exactly. The rendering in desktop mode in this beta is really nowhere near as good as the old browser. It totally cocks up the layout of BBC news (when I can see it), Wikipedia, etc.

Let's see, reasons I used Opera Mobile (not necessarily in order):

- not one of the big-boys' browsers
- Opera Link ensured consistency with desktop set up
- excellent "normal" page rendering
- small, tidy interface
- fast to use (creating/switching tabs, etc.)
- highly customisable / informative

Every one of these strong points is severely degraded in the new browser. sad

(note, I'm not talking about performance or beta issues - I'm talking about the design!)

MossMan Wednesday, March 6, 2013 11:18:48 AM

Update - phone ran out of battery last night, and today (after re-booting the phone) it seems better behaved. E.g. the BBC news site is loading and its thumbnail is now a BBC logo instead of a grey & white square. The layout is also better than yesterday - although still with randomly changing font sizes and text area widths between sections.

I now understand that one has to zoom out and back in for each change in text box dimensions, so as to get a screen-width block of text again. Bit of a pain in the arse compared to zooming in one time and having the text fit the screen width as you scroll around...

As I'm not on Android, all I can give here is HUGE kudos on the add video! The music and narrator's voice make up incredible atmosphere. I've really liked the Nordic feel in Opera's latest communications, do keep it up! smile

Fingers crossed and can't wait to see what you do with the iOS version, tho I doubt we'll get see that anytime soon.

Akarshan Biswasakarshanopera Wednesday, March 6, 2013 1:08:31 PM

So you just integrate Opera mini and opera mobile into ONE opera mobile browser using off-road mode>?? This is really appreciating..
Please bring back "BACK" , "FORWARD" buttons and "EXIT" buttons.

PaninaManina Wednesday, March 6, 2013 2:51:09 PM

A short list of what is LACKING (most of it Opera Mobile had).
Additions is another story...

I noticed that for me, menus don't work properly when Off-Road is on.

I wanted to try it, went to install it, but oh surprise, it is not compatible with my phone. Good work Opera. And since I will not upgrade a phone to test this. I will stick with plain old Opera.

This webkit business is like a russian roulette, except you guys loaded all the chambers with bullets.

Jesse Hilldarksear Thursday, March 7, 2013 1:42:37 AM

Very solid for a first beta using a brand new engine. Only problem is that text boxes are acting strangely when typing into them.

EDIT: For those who want more search options than google it looks like you have a choice between Google, Amazon, Dictionary.com, eBay, IMDB and Wikipedia. Just select the address/search bar and then there should be an icon to the right where you can select which search. Hopefully, they will allow us to add and remove search engines in a later release.

What's your phone model and Android version? If you don't mention this basic thing when asking for help Opera Software will be unable to do anything. But the way you talked I guess instead of asking for help you're just whining!

The new Interface looks better, takes less space and doesn't have redudant elements like the search box or the back button. I like how private tabs are represented.

What's bad about the new browser compared to Opera Mobile:
- Address bar is always visible (I propose the same hiding mechanism as on the Discover page)
- Offroad can't disable automatically when on WLAN
- opera:config or something similar would be nice (for stuff like Ignore Target, urlfilter, History Navigation Mode, ...).
- Opera Link is missing
- Resources: Uses approximately twice as much power (on my Galaxy Nexus with Stock Android 4.2.2) and an incredible amount of RAM (i.e. Android stops all widgets on the start screen after Opera Beta was running for a while)
- "Opera. Made for Android." So why does it have an IOS style icon? The old one was way better. smile
- I find the + icon on the address bar unintuitive. A star (like in Opera Mobile) or something like this would be better (a speed dial icon with a +):
▪▪▪
▪▪▪
▪▪+
- The icon for a new tab should be a simple +.
- Text wrap is missing.

What I don't like about both browsers:
- There are tasks that take too much user interactions:
* Tab switch. I like how one can switch tabs with a swipe from the left/right in Chrome.
* Downloads page: I'd like downloaded stuff to open on the first click. These buttons that are revealed on click could easily be shown on the right of the entry. This is in fact a frequently used Android design pattern.
- Speaking of Downloads: Why doesn't the browser integrate with Android's downloads functionality? I don't get why opening my browser is the only way to access downloaded files (instead via the "Downloads" app).
- I want to disallow third party content to place cookies.

That's it for now. Maybe I'll return with more criticism. p

Well it's obviously subjective but I certainly don't agree it looks better. As for space, the current Mobile button bar seems smaller to me than the Beta bar - and the Mobile pop-up address bar seems more useful to me than the cramped single bar in Beta (on a phone - I imagine that's less of an issue on a tablet screen).

I use the back button, stop button, re-load button, tabs button in Mobile - and the forward button is useful when you want to go back and forth to previous pages to check things. To me those buttons look better and are more logically laid out than in Beta.
