Last week, Opera's hybrid Norwegian/American Phillip (Grønvold) travelled from Silicon Valley to Oslo to show off the T-Mobile G1 Android device with Opera Mini. That caught the attention of Anders Brenna, the editor at Digi.no, a leading IT news outlet in Norway. Check out Phillip's demo of Opera Mini on the Android. You'll see a lightning fast and user-friendly competitor to the other browser on the Android platform.

Opera Mini 4.2 beta has been out for three days, so everyone has had a chance to put the little browser to the test. Now, we want to hear your opinion, specifically on one of the main new features: The six new skins!

This is cool (and a bit weird). Microsoft promotes Opera Mini on their MSN mobile portal. We like! They even state that:
And the best news is that it is free. Hell, who PAYS for internet browsers anyway!?

Remember last week's article in the New York Times "Bits" blog? It stirred up discussion all over the tubes and the retelling of the story has created "an odd snowball of misunderstanding".
The author, Saul Hansell, had asked Jon S. von Tetzchner (Opera’s CEO) about the iPhone, after he mentioned how the Opera Mini browser was popular on other smartphones. It came out after that Opera had started developing an iPhone version, but didn’t pursue it because Apple doesn’t allow products on the iPhone that compete with its own software — in this case, the Safari browser. Well, the article stated that, figuring it would tell iPhone owners what they really wanted to know: They are not going to be able to use Opera Mini.
This caused many interesting conclusions and discussions.

Every month, our State of the Mobile Web report is packed with information about what people do with Opera Mini. But there are always some pieces of information that we don't include in the report. One interesting piece of information is what phones are popular among Opera Mini users.
As a part of this Insider Scoop we are publishing the most used phones by Opera Mini users and the top phones used to download Opera Mini last month. This information gives a cool perspective on what models have been popular in the last months and what are the latest best-selling phones.
This is not a scientific exercise, but with over 19 million unique users of Opera Mini, it gives an insight into what is popular.
Highlights:
- Nokia and Sony Ericsson dominate the list and are clearly the most popular brands among Opera Mini users.
- Opera Mini is popular with Blackberry users, when compared with the Blackberry global market share they rank very high among Opera Mini users.
- Opera Mini seems to be popular both in mid/low end phones as well on so-called smartphones. It seems that, regardless of whether you pay $10 or $300 for your phone, you still want "the Internet"
- The only model on the top 25 that is not from Nokia, Sony Ericsson or a Blackberry is the Samsung E250. No Motorola phones appear in the top 25... looks like those pink RAZRs are not so popular anymore.
