Become a better browser

, ,

Do you use Opera on a computer? Would you like to get more out of the time you spend online? Then you can take our first-ever survey of browsing habits.

We are doing this survey to find out three things:

  • What our users want to accomplish online
  • The obstacles to achieving those goals
  • How the browser itself can help our users to be both more productive and satisfied with the time they spend on the web
  • The survey has two parts: in the first, you'll identify your main objectives and issues around browsing. In the second part, you'll get a much more detailed picture of how you are spending your time online, by keeping a browsing diary. (You can use the web timer extension to make this part easier - it will keep track of your time for you.)

All the information you provide will only be used for the purposes of the survey. That means we won't sell it or pass it on to anyone else. We are only collecting it in an aggregated, anonymous form to help us make future versions of Opera a better tool for browsing.

We can't do it without you! So even if you only have time to do the first part of the survey, it would be much appreciated.

    Take the survey here.

    And thanks!

    smile

I did the part I, but I'd be able to answer part II after a week (in order to get data for it using the TabTimer extension)
But it seems I wouln't be able to skip the part II, so you'd finally have 2 reports from me: one with missing part II, and one with part I and part II.
I hope you'd discard the first one smile

Ok Opera, let's be honest now... Does this survey have anything to do with ditching Presto and switching to Webkit engine?? I am a loyal Opera user for years now but like many loyal users I have some concerns about our favorite browser. Especially since the lack of information. sherlock

The Web Timer Extension became not so recently a piece of garbage on my PC and whenever I report a bug, the author blames it all on Opera bugs. (And he is probably right about them.) I definitely wouldn't base a survey on that data.

Honestly, this has nothing to do with the switch to WebKit. This is actually my own project, which comes out of observing how many of us get in our own way when it comes to the web. Meaning we use browsing as a distraction and an avoidance method. So if there is any way I can contribute to being a part of the solution instead of the problem, I want to do that.

You don't have to use the web timer. And really, the browsing diary info doesn't need to be 100% scientifically accurate data. What we are trying to identify is the level of distraction vs focus you have while browsing. How often you switch tabs seems to be a good indicator of that. So if you have another way to estimate how much of the time you are focusing, ie doing one thing at a time, versus switching between things ("multitasking" or just being distracted), in a given browsing session, that will still be useful information.

Well, this is useful data to a point, but the reason for the survey is really to get at broader things, i.e., what are people actually trying to do online and what helps or hinders them in terms of their own behaviours - not so much the features that are in the browser itself.

Thanks for the answer Anna and after I took a good look at the survey I think it's an honest one angel
I'm just a bit worried about the best browser in the world so far and my favorite for years. Thank you for trying to improve Opera even more!

What our users want to accomplish online
The obstacles to achieving those goals
How the browser itself can help our users to be both more productive and satisfied with the time they spend on the web

That depends which "user" you are referring to. wink

My "professional" user (translator) wants safe access to accurate and unbiased (un-"optimised") information, without a risk of having future research "optimised" or biased by the current research, as well as the ability to review range of data smoothly. You could say the browsing requirements for this user are not speed but the capacity (number of pages & windows), privacy, UI features (ease of switching pages, tiling, ease of opening new URL & initiating new search without having to open a new blank page, and organising open pages and windows, ie Windows Panel). This user does not need speeddial or tab thumbnails or even page bar (aka tabbar),but having Personal Bar outside page for speedy access to regular sites is essential for quick access.

My "social" user, aka Mimi's Mum, does not need much, other than safe and private access to my.opera.com and perhaps a few other social media such as twitter and derived information. And this user also has no need for speeddial or tab thumbnails or even page bar, but like having Personal Bar outside page for speedy access to regular sites is essential for quick access.

My "private" user only wants safe and private access to local information sites, and reliable email client feature smoothly integrated into browser. Needless to say this user also has no need for speeddial or tab thumbnails or page bar but like having Personal Bar outside page for speedy access to regular sites is essential for quick access.

As I juggle multiple PCs, using multiple Windows user accounts for each PC and multiple -pd switch generated Opera user profiles for each Win account; and; my time vastly varies depending on my job status, it is impossible to measure browsing habits and convert into empirical data. Therefore I will not take part in the survey. But the gist of my requirements are as stated above. I hope you are able to incorporate that at analysis stage of your study. wink

It's bad enough. The other browser hinders me (even if they are more compatible with some site and the new version a few milliseconds faster than Opera) because they completely lack of features what I use. Some of them frequently, some of them less frequently, but I also need the less frequently used features.

For example when I see a HTML sheet which horizontally 2000+ px I hit a Ctrl+F11 and I see the whole content without pain (horizontally scroll back and forth, etc.) Priceless.

For example when I want to download files with specific extensions or specific string with names I easily switch to Links panel and download them. If I edited previously the menu.ini I even able to download to a predefined folder.

I don't need to search for hours for the appropriate extension, I don't need to shooting sparrows with a (extension) cannon, I easily able to do what I want. With a built in feature. Priceless.

For example, when some troll embed some unwanted content (10+ MB gifs in signatures from slow far-east servers bigsmile) on a frequently reloaded site (e.g. forums) I switch to cached images (when needed I can update them thanks to the single-key shortcuts by hit only an "i" key) and I able to reload and navigate without pain. Priceless.

I don't need to write settings to override.ini and I don't need to block every single annoying file when I just looking on the site as guest and won't visiting in the future, so doesn't created garbage in the configuration files for this reason. Priceless.

I want to tell more examples of usage, but first, I'm tired, second, usually come up when in use, how good it is (compared to other browsers).

I much like the Opera's features that I endure the serious bugs (like smooth scrolling on this blog with position:fixed background) rather than I read this post or send this comment from Chrome. bigsmile

    ErikshaktiIIIgta Wednesday, February 20, 2013 3:32:26 AM

    - Took the survey, waiting one week to send info

    - +1 to peng, +1 to Mimis Mum (MM). Features... *sight* in which other browser can you customize keyboard shortcuts so easy, see your mail with the press of one key, and much more...

    - hopefully not 1995-2013 cry cry

I thnk the survey will give a nice wide scope of things, but here are my straight answers:

-- What our users want to accomplish online.
get info and entertainment fast, and many times just explore the web with ease.

-- The obstacles to achieving those goals.
I'd probably improve session/tab/window management, also when using classic windows theme, maximized Chrome window looks better.

--How the browser itself can help our users to be both more productive and satisfied with the time they spend on the web.
Retaining and improving the features that have made it so loved by fans.

    cheers

    I'm in trouble.
    My reasons:
    - Work - 30%
    - Information - 20%
    - Entertainment - 15%
    - Socializing - 15%
    - Other - 20%
How to answer the first question? This survey isn't the best. :-S

I am lazy but What are the features that define Opera? would be a good starting point.

There are many many useful functions hard coded in Opera which appeal to various needs of power users. It is this Swiss Army knife approach that makes Opera the unique browser it is.

Are there voices in Opera that want to reduce the rich functionality in Opera? I find it hard to believe this is just a hobby project. Especially when writing a logging tool.

    My radar is up...
