Opera Tokyo crew visited Okinawa

, , , ...

Let me report to you a Japanese local event “CSS Nite in Okinawa 2008” on the last weekend in Okinawa where is southern tropical island in Japan. From the Opera Tokyo office, 7 members visited Okinawa to participate the event.

This time that was 2nd time of having the CSS Nite in Okinawa. This year more than 150 peoples attended who they are mostly local Web designers and developers acting in Okinawa.

In the first day, some of presenters had been there from Tokyo to have sessions to the audiences, and other sponsor companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, also Opera had presentations, demonstrations, exhibition booth in the event. On our booth, we exhibited our products on PC, Mobile and Devices.

In our presentation, we introduced Opera Dragonfly which is bundled Web Developer’s tool on Opera 9.5. We demonstrated the debug works uses Opera Dragonfly running on PC syncing with a Web page browsed by Opera Mobile 9.5 running on a Windows Mobile base smart-phone WILLCOM 03. It was our first time opportunity to demonstrate the technique in Japan that seemed the audiences were really interested in the debugging work operation between cross platform devices. We got many questions after that.

In the 2nd day when was for the enjoyment and social networking sea side party among participants and local Web industry peoples. There was a venue on a beach we enjoyed BBQ, local beers and liquors. Also we played treasure haunting game on the beach. The some of prizes were provided by Opera. A few winners got brand new Opera 9.5 T-shirts.

Personally that was my first time to visit in Okinawa where awesome island. There are beautiful landscape, very clean ocean, cute animals and fishes, yummy cuisines and nice local peoples who have a special hospitality.

And my most impressed thing was I had been able to meet several Opera users in Okinawa. They always love Opera and introduce our products for their local friends there. It was my pleasure to meet and talk with them.

Opera event in China

2 days before the Kongzhong-Opera 2.0 final launch, some Opera China team members held another free beer event for Chinese users in Guangzhou, China.

The place we chose is an open-air bar on the bank of the Pearl River, with a beautiful night view, especially with the tender moonlight. Users came around 8pm. They were happy in seeing us and satisfied that at least one of us (Joe) looks like the Opera Man.

We tried to offer everyone free beers but one guy insisted on having free juice. I guess he was forced not to have beer by his girlfriend who was sitting beside him (and having beer). By the way, that guy is really an advanced user who tinkers around with every weekly build of Opera 9.5.

We then demonstrated our Kongzhong-Opera 2.0, a localized Opera Mini 4, with all of its dazzling effects. As mobile surfing is quite popular here, some users tried Kongzhong-Opera right after our demonstration, and others were already regular users of Kongzhong-Opera. They all seemed to like it.

After the demonstration, the topic of our discussion got broader. The attendees were curious about what happens at Opera behind-the-scenes. They asked about Jon's swimming trip, Opera's office, and Opera's marketing strategy in China. As Opera employees, we were very happy to see people so enthusiastic about Opera. Most of the attendees went home at around 10pm. They left us with valuable feedback, sweet memories, and promises that they would tell their friends about Opera.

Please see photos from the event here.
