RETURN FROM FIRESTORM

A man and woman join together
Taking vows that blend them,
Bind them, intertwine them.
And mixing them together to create reality.
A child is born all bright and new
That's named your name; this thing called "you".
And with no effort, thought or action,
Your parents' essence, purpose drives
Become embedded deep inside.
And play apart of all you do,
An unconscious force, a shading; hue
That colors how you see the world.
A vast inheritance.
Then add to this your own desires
And gifts and leanings, passions, fires,
And there you have the reason why
Your expectations run so high.
For when you see your parents' lack
You vow to take up any slack
By setting up strict expectations,
Lofty plans of pure perfection.
No wonder you are tired and drained;
Internal fights and judgements reign.
The righteous child demands its say
And rants and raves to have its way.
A little "Beast", unforgiving,
Wanting life to do its bidding.
So you're held hostage, stuck in the past,
Instead of being freed at last
To let your parents off the hook,
Take the time to see and look
At all the gifts and special things
That forgiving and accepting brings,
They did the best that they could do,
And now your life is up to you.
