CSS sprite generator

, , ,

Those fine chaps at Yahoo!, Stu Colville and Ed Eliot, are currently working on a book for Apress entitled something like "High Performance Web Development Techniques," which I assure you, will be a damn fine book when it hits the shelves (I should know - I signed them up back when I was still at Apress, before I moved on to Opera!)

Anyhow, they have started putting stuff from the book online. One of the coolest things so far is their CSS sprite generator, and I thought I'd share it with you - see here for the generator.

(from their web page) "CSS sprites are a way to reduce the number of HTTP requests made for image resources referenced by your site. Images are combined into one larger image at defined X and Y coorindates. Having assigned this generated image to relevant page elements the background-position CSS property can then be used to shift the visible area to the required component image. This technique can be very effective for improving site performance, particularly in situations where many small images, such as menu icons, are used."
