Opera Problems - or they might be my MX1000

, , ,

The MX100 by Logitech is that fancy laser optical mouse that is getting so many good reviews. But, of course, like many products, you only learn the bad after you purchase the damn thing. This is what happened to me. I read the reviews, I did some digging, I guess I can safely say I was informed. Once home and hooked up I installed the latest drivers and the mouse was ready to go. At first it was ‘cursor skipping’. Then it was - and still is - buttons not responding. I moved my receiver to a better place (6 inches closer, still on my desktop) which improved the skipping cursor slightly. I can still see a skipping (wiggling) cursor when using Photoshop. That really bothers me. The buttons are still only 90% responsive. For example, when clicking the middle button to open a link in a background tab while browsing in Opera the button doesn't respond all the time. Sometimes I have to wiggle the middle button left and right to make it click which then opens the link. ANOYING! The other is the back button. I like Opera’s mouse gestures but if the mouse has a back button I will use it because it’s quicker. I am noticing in Opera that sometime if I click the back button it will not respond. If I click on the web page, still nothing. But, sometimes, if I click on the browser itself (like the main bar or scrollbar the button will work. Sometimes nothing works so I press 'Z' to go back. It got me wondering if it is a problem only related to my mouse or if it’s Opera 9. Since my clean install a few weeks back I have noticed Opera 9 not displaying a few pages correctly – pages that use to display fine. The page will load but has overlapping content. A refresh doesn’t fix the problem. I have checked the mouse issues in other browsers (FF & IE). The issues are there but not as constant.

I believe it’s a combination of both but mostly the mouse. So, to anyone thinking about buying the MX1000 my words of advise are these; if the cursor skips even after you installed the latest software and even when the receiver is close to the mouse and even when the mouse is on a good ‘mousing’ surface – take it back ASAP. It could be a faulty mouse.

To finish off the shit sandwich, the MX1000 is a great design. The form factor fits my hand like no other mouse I have had before. It’s comfortable and smooth sliding. A great purchase if it wasn’t for the performance issues and its all about performance.
