    This photo album contains pictures of journeys and hikings throughout Canada. It is a huge country, where European distances seem to be meaningless small: to reach somewhere in Canada, you can't just enter RyanAir or EasyJet.

    • Gambier Island: My first overnight hike in Canada, in the beginning of October 2008
    • Wedgemount Lake: A fantastic overnight alpin hike in the mountains near to Whistler. The blue lake, the mountains and the glacier set up an amazing scenery. I took my first picture of a bear, what was a suprising finish of the second October weekend
    • Coliseum Mountain Hike: This was an exhausting but beautiful day hike in the mountains bordering North Vancouver. It was a sunny October Sunday and I got again some shots of bears.

    Dieses Fotoalbum umfasst alle Reisen und Wanderungen durch Kanada. Es ist ein gigantische Land, wo europäische Entfernungen bedeutungslos klein wirken: Um irgendwohin zu gelangen, kann man nicht einfach bei RyanAir oder EasyJet einsteigen.

Ich konnte das erste Bild eines Bären schießen, was einen überraschenden netten Abschluss des zweiten Oktoberwochenendes darstellte
    • Coliseum Mountain Hike: Ein anstrengender, aber schöner Tagesausflug in die Berge im Norden Vancouvers. Es war sonniger Oktobersonntag und ich bekam erneut Bären vor meine Linse.

    Vancouver has population of some two million people in the greater district area. It is really beautiful situated at the Canadian west coast, with surrounded by mountains and the Pacific ocean.
    The neighbourhood I'm living in is quite exciting, as it isn't dominated by students, but by immigrants from Asia and other parts of the world. It is really diverse und multi-cultural.
    The view from Simon Fraser University, where I am doing an exchange year, is also awesome.

    Vancouver zählt etwa zwei Millionen Einwohner im Großraum. Die Stadt ist sehr schön an der kanadischen Westküste gelegen, zwischen den Bergen und dem Pazifik. Das Viertel, in dem ich lebe, ist recht spannend, da es nicht so sehr von Studenten geprägt ist, viel mehr von Einwanderern aus Asien und anderen Teilen der Welt und daher äußerst multi-kulturell.
    Die Aussicht von der Simon Fraser University, wo ich mein Austauschjahr absolviere, ist atemberaubend.

    The birthday trip end of June of me and Janika to Venice - a city with the atmosphere of continual decadence, morbidly and full of tourists and without native inhabitants. Venice is really a shadow of it's old glamour. Nevertheless, the islands around still have life and also different feeling.

    Ende Juni unternahmem Janika und ich unseren Geburtstagsausflug nach Venedig - eine Stadt mit der Atmosphäre des andauernden Verfalls, der schon bei der Errichtung eingesetzt zu haben scheint. Voller Touristen und ohne Einwohner, eine Fassade des alten Glanzes. Die Insel ringsherum jedoch sind noch bewohnt und haben auch eine völlig andere Ausstrahlung.

    It is not too far from Dundee, at least by train - the Scottish highlands around the sleepy village of Blair Atholl and the city of Pitlochry. The mountains are really fantastic and Blair Atholl is a quite area, without tourists, while Pitlochry has a lot of them.

    Mit dem Zug ist es nicht zu weit weg von Dundee: Die Highlands um das kleine verschlafene Dörfchen Blair Atholl und die Stadt. Die Berge sind fantastisch und die Gegend ist zumindest um Blair Atholl längst nicht so touristisch überflutet wie - leider - schon in Pitlochry.

    In October 2007, Janika and me did a 5-day trip to the west coast of Scotland, to the Isle of Skye. It is an amazing landscape with green mountains, dark rocks, the Atlantic ocean, waterfalls and a lot of sheeps.

    Dundee is the city of my University in Scotland, a bit north of Edinburgh. Here I'm going to study until 2011. Dundee is an industrial city with maybe 140,000 inhabitants and a beautiful view over the Tay.

    10th August 2007: My EVS in Estonia endet. I sat in the bus from Tartu and headed with a lot of beautiful memories towards Vilnius in Lithuania. There I met Antonio and his blue as heaven Seat - together we started a marathon of sightseeing through Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungaria and via Vienna and Praha back home to Dresden, where we arrived the 1st of September.

    10. August 2007: Mein EFD in Estland endet. Ich saß mit vielen schönen Erinnerungen im Bus von Tartu nach Vilnius in Litauen. Dort traf ich mit Antonio und seinem himmelblauen Seat zusammen- zusammen begannen wir einen Marathon der Sehenswürdigkeiten im "Ostblock", durch Litauen, Polen, Slowakei, Ungarn und über Wien und Prag zurück nach Hause nach Dresden, wo wir am 1. September ankamen.

    Hier ist das allumfassende Alum zu all den unzähligen kleinen Reisen und Touren in Estland seit dem Anfang meines Europäischen Freiwilligendienstes in Estland. Es ist ein kleines Land, aber auch ein sehr schönes, mit viel Natur und dem Charisma, dass eben nicht alles so perfekt und exakt ist, wie in der westlichen Welt.

  • Latvia and Lithuania

    This is the photo album of my journeys through the other two Baltic states, Latvia and Lithuania. As they often finish in Estonia, you'll find also pictures from there.

    • The first trip was with Olivia in November 2006. We hitchhiked from Tartu via Valmiera to Riga, where we stayed a few days. It was an interesting trip :smile:
    • In June 2007 I hitchhiked with Alexandra from Võru through Latvia and Lithuania. We passed Latvia first in the east (Balvi, Rezekne, Ludza, Daugavpils) and continued to Kaunas in Lithuania. Via Vilnius we headed to the Hill of Crosses. From there I continued alone to Riga and on to Cesis and the Gauja-Nationalpark. On my last day I decided to hitchhike along the Via Baltica, made a stop at the coast and went back to Tartu by Pärnu and Viljandi.
    • In the end of July 2008 I started with a bicycle and train trip. Arriving by ship in Klaipeda/Memel in Lithuania, I enjoyed the Curonian Spit and drove next day up to Liepaja in Latvia. Taking the train via Riga, I continued to Valga in Estonia. From here I drove again by bicycle through the beautiful southern Estonian landscape of Valgamaa and finnished my trip in Tartu.

    Hier ist das Fotoalbum zu meinen Reisen durch die beiden anderen baltischen Staaten, Lettland und Litauen. Da meine Reisen meistens in Estland anfangen und enden, habe ich auch davon Bilder im Album.

    • Der erste Trip war im November 2006 mit Olivia. Wir sind von Tartu über Valmiera nach Riga getrampt, wo wir ein paar Tage blieben. Es wawr ein interesssanter Trip :smile:
    • Im Juni 2007 sind Alexandra und ich durch Lettland und Litauen getrampt. Zunächst durch den Osten Lettlands (Balvi, Rezekne, Ludza, Daugavpils) und haben unsere Reise dann nach Kaunas in Litauen fortgesetzt. Über Vilnius ging es zum dem Berg der Kreuze. Von dort bin ich allein weitergereist. Über Riga ging es nach Cesis und dem Gauja-Nationalpark. Am letzten Tag meiner Reise entschied ich mich entlang der Via Baltica zu trampen, legte einen Zwischenhalt an der Ostseeküste ein und reiste über Pärnu und Viljandi zurück nach Tartu.
    • Ende Juli 2008 startete ich zu meiner Fahrrad- und Zugreise. Mit der Fähre setzte ich von Kiel nach Klaipeda/Memel über, genoss die Kurische Nehrung, und fuhr am nächsten Tag bis nach Liepaja in Lettland. Mit Zug ging es über Riga nach Valga in Estland. Von dort fuhr ich wieder mit Fahrrade durch die schöne südestnische Landschaft in Valgamaa und erreichte Tartu am Abend.

    I was travelling through Finland for 11 days in March 2007, while there had been running the campaigns for the parliament elections. Helping a bit for Vihreat / De Gröna (The Greens), I went to the cities of Helsinki, including a short trip to Lohja, to Tampere and for most of the time to Turku. There the Greens finally got an additional seat in the parliament :wink:

    In 11 Tagen durch Finnland im März 2007, während dort der Wahlkampf für die Parlamentswahlen im vollen Gange waren. Ich half ein wenig für die Vihreat / De Gröna (Die Grünen), und kam somit in die Städte Helsinki, mit einem kleinen Ausflug nach Lohja, nach Tampere und nach Turku. Dort bekamen die Grünen auch einen neuen Sitz im Parlament :wink:

    There are more than 1500 islands belonging to the Estonian territory – Latvia has not one :wink:

    • On my first trip we headed to Hiiumaa via Padise and Haapsalu, right after my EVS On-Arrival Training in September 2006. It was really - and first time that I hitchhiked.
    • Next one was again with Charles, Camille and other friends, this time in the deepest winter, in February 2007, to Saaremaa and the semi-island Sõrve. It was a wonderful journey.
    • . In June I went with a group to Kihnu, a little island with its very own culture and atmosphere.
    • And end of August 2008 my first trip in the BMW with Janika to Muhu, what was really nice :smile:

    Es gibt mehr als 1500 Inseln auf dem estnischem Staatsgebiet - Lettland besitzt nicht eine :wink:
    • Die erste Reise führte nach Hiiumaa über Padise und Haapsalu, gleich nach dem on-arrival Training für meinen EFD im September 2006. Es war einer der schönsten Trips und das erste Mal, dass ich trampte :smile:
    • Auch die nächste Reise war mit Charles, Camille und anderen Freunden, diesmal im tiefsten Winter, im Februar 2007, nach Saaremaa und der Halbinsel Sõrve.
    • Im Juni 2007 ging es mit einer größeren Gruppe nach Kihnu, einer kleinen Insel mit eigener Atmosphäre und Kultur.
    • Im August 2009 schließlich die erste Autoreise im BMW :D mit Janika nach Muhu - richtig schön :smile:

    Tartu ist die zweitgrößte estnische Stadt. Ein sehr schöner klassizistischer Stadtkern, alte Holzhäuschen-Viertel (Suppilinn) und sozialistische Architektur prägen die 100.000-Einwohner Stadt. Dank der wichtigen Universität und dem Status im Süden des Estlands ist Tartu dynamisch und trotzdem immer familiär. Eine Stadt der guten Gedanken.

    Maarja Küla was the place of my EVS (European Voluntary Service) from August 2006 to August 2007. Also afterwards I visited it a lot of times.
    Maarja Küla is a little village in the south-east of Estonia, located at the beautiful area at Ahjajõgi between Taevaskoja and Kiidjärve. The village is a home for mentally handicaped youngsters, were they live assisted but individual. It is a way to develope their skills that they can live more and more independent.
    My time in Maarja Küla was just fantastic :up:

    In Maarja Küla habe ich meinen EFD (Europäischen Freiwilligendienst) absolviert, von August 2006 bis Auguast 2007. Auch danach bin ich oft zu Besuch gekommen.
    Maarja Küla ist ein kleines Dorf im Südosten Estlands, gelegen in der schönen Region am Ahja-Fluss, zwischen Taevaskoja und Kiidjärve. Das Dörfchen ist ein Zuhause für geistig behinderte Jugendliche, wo sie unter Assistenz ihr eigenes Leben führen können. Es ist ein Weg sie zu mehr und mehr Unabhängigkeit zu führen und ihre Fähigkeiten für das alltägliche Leben zu verbessern.
    Ich hatte eine fantastische Zeit in Maarja Küla :up:

    Taani linn, Danish city, shows the orign of Estonia's capital Tallinn (Reval). It has a population of around 500,000 people, some 40% are ethnic Russians. In March 2007 happend the riots of the Russian minority against the removement of a Soviet War monument, what demonstrated the tensions between the ethnic groups in Estonia.
    However, Tallin has a nice old medival town, with a all defence structure such as walls and towers sustained until today. Ofcourse, the old town of Tallinn is the main tourist attraction of Estonia, but doesn't represent the country and its culture very well in my eyes, rather its history connected to Germany. The outskirts are less atrractive with all the Soviet-style blocks, but regarding to the vast area they are covering, quite impressive.
    This photoalbum shows some of the impressions I collected from Tallinn.

    Der Name Taani linn, Stadt der Dänen, zeugt von der Herkunft der Hauptstadt Estlands, Tallinn (Reval). Ungefähr 500.000 Einwohner zählt es, darunter etwa 40% ethnische Russen. Im März 2007 gab es zerstörerische Randale und Demonstrationen gegen die Versetzung eines sowjetischen Kriegdenkmals, was die Spannungen zwischen den ethnischen Gruppen in Estland widerspiegelte.
    Tallinn hat einen sehr schönen mittelalterlichen Stadtkern, bei dem sogar sämtlichen Verteidigungsanlagen, wie Mauern und Türme, erhalten geblieben sind. Die Altstadt ist natürlich auch die Hauptattraktion für den Tourismus, repräsentiert meiner Meining nach aber nicht das Land oder die Kultur wieder. Eher ein Stück estnischer Geschichte und Verknüpfung an das mittelalterliche Deutschland. Die anderen Stadtteile sind durch die sowjetischen Betonblocks wesentlich unattraktiver, abr in Bezug auf die Fläche, die sie einnehmen, doch auch beeindruckend.
    Das Fotoalbum zeigt einige der Eindrücke, die ich von Tallinn gesammelt habe.
