The trials of being a parent to a grown child

I received yet another plea from my almost 19 YO daughter who is away in her freshman year of college,
again asking me to adopt a dog for her pleasure, company, etc. etc.
This is like having a splinter that festers over and over and will not heal. I do not want a dog, I can not afford a dog, I am stuck with her cats and my wises cats; I already feel like I live in a zoo. My house is full of cat dander, cat hair, litter all over the floor, I have to waste money buying them food, I have to dump litter and on an on.
She insists a dog is needed. Yep, 40 days a year she would take care of it. The other 324 days of the year, I would be stuck with it, food, vets, entertaining and on and on; not to mention the fights I would have to break up between the dog and cats.
The only reason the kid is in the school of her choice is that I took on a part time job, came out of retirement, to earn around 10K a year to finish paying what she did not get in Scholarships, grants and loans. Yet I am unreasonable because I do not want to be bothered with a dog.
What are you going to do when your play around money runs out? Who will put gas in the tank? Who will pay the insurance and property taxes? Who is going to provide spending money, clothing money, grooming money? And all you can think about is a dog to entertain you??
It seems to me that the past 18 years and 10 months have rotated in one way or another around her wishes and whims.
You are a grown woman, on your own. When you come home for summer, get a job! Be it at Wall Mart or 7-11, I do not care, or try for a cosh job at a bank, in a lawyer office, whatever, get a job and become responsible for yourself. If that is not good enough go to summer school.
When you are finished with school, have a job, your own place etc, get as many pets as you want. Until that time, do not ask me again for a pet. I have enough on me with the job and the ageing process. If you do not like living out here in the sticks with Ann and me, ask your aunt to let you live at here house, so you can be happy.
