Jacana or Jesus Bird Photos

, , , , , ,

One of the more appealing birds of the Wetlands is the Jacana. This has enormous feet, which mean it can almost walk on water (it rests on weeds just under the surface). Another name for it is the Jesus Bird because of this ability.

The birds don't like you coming too close, but in a boat you can drift in a bit closer than on land. So these shots are from the Mary River.

This is the comb-crested jacana, and is found from Borneo to Northern Australia.

Great photos. Have you ever thought of video taping them?
I love to watch them "walk" on water.

When I first saw them walking on water I just had to get some shots  This guy was reluctant to move too far from us as there was a crocodile lurking in the background.

Thanks Carol

Alas, getting good video would mean a major leap in weight and expense with gear. I'm using my largest telephoto already to get these shots. I'd need more than just a consumer-level camcorder...

More photos are still coming

You are welcome.
Well may-be some day you can have just a video camera along. :D

great photos - Ive tried to get photos of moorhens doing something similar with little success.

Yeah, I got nothing really better than a snapshot until I got into a boat.

I remain fascinated and beguiled by the size of those feet and ability to walk on water.
