The net reason
Speaking over national television, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said that if the current consumption rate of fuel were allowed to go unchecked, Malaysia would become a net importer of oil by 2010.
The chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Fuel Prices said Malaysia was at present a small net exporter.
"The figure is only about 75,000 barrels a day. Our production is stagnant at 650,000 barrels a day. But our consumption is going up. So the gap is narrowing.....

The "real" reason
Our oil production is not stagnant, it's declining. This act of sugar-coating the truth denies the ability of the populous to correctly gauge a threat by allowing them a sense of unfounded safety. Soon we will see the kerbau(@ reindeer) in the headlight; but only when it's too late.

Hi, cicaklaut (SeaLizard). How are U ? Do U have 'teh tarik' (coffee + milk) over there ? I am from East Malaysia, Borneo.
Last year Malaysia petroleum production drop 6.95% from 741,900 barrels a
day to 690,300 barrels a day ?? If Najib is correct, current Malaysia
production is 650,000 barrels a day. A frightening decline rate of 11.67%
per annum. Within 4 years , Malaysia will be net importer of oil.
Inverse(520,000/690300) / 0.0695 = -4.07 years
The year is 2006. So 2006 + 4.07 ~ 2010 Net Importer (Gov edition)
The year is Sep 2005(Petronas unaudited result) + 4.07 years ~ 2009 Net Importer (Logical edition)
Demand is assumed to remained at current 520,000 barrels a day for 5 years. I just calculate the year when supply meet demand. Scary !! Personally I think 2008 will be the time when 'kambing dapat tidur atas jalan' (goat can sleep on the road).
I still thinking of frozen lizards in the lab. Hopefully you fare better than that.

I don't think the crash will be that bad, that soon though I agree that the roads will reach a state when very few vehicles pass through it.
If your vision comes true, I'll just hop back to Malaysia, Truly Asia (and Truly Warm). Nowadays, I never complain that it's too hot back home.
