Tips for staying safe online this Christmas

As Christmas shoppers head online this festive season looking for good deals, so to will spammers, waiting for the moment they can pounce on unsuspecting consumers. During the festive season, consumers need to be wary of such attacks online and do all they can to stay safe online, says internet security software distributor, AVG (AU/NZ).

“Online shopping offers many benefits, including the ability to shop at any time of the day or night that is convenient,” says Lloyd Borrett, Marketing Manager, AVG (AU/NZ). “To help, we’ve developed a set of practical tips to help shoppers keep their personal information safe while they are saving time and getting great deals by shopping online.”

AVG (AU/NZ) offers six tips for online shoppers this holiday season:

1. Look for the ‘S’ for security.

Make sure the web sites you are shopping from are secure and have ‘https’ in the URL when you are in their checkout/purchase process. The ‘s’ ensures security. When you are in the secure section of a web site, you will also see an icon for a locked padlock on your browser, either on the address bar or on the bottom right corner. Additionally, use the internet to research online retailers not familiar to you.

2. Stay current on security software.

This means making sure you have the latest virus protection software updates from your security software provider. It’s important because the bad guys move around frequently. Security software companies are working to stay one step ahead of them. If you are updated, you are staying one step ahead, too.

3. Think before you link.

Employ a URL scanning tool to ensure you will be warned if you click on links that lead to infected web pages. The time to find out whether a page is bad is BEFORE you load it into your web browser.

4. Keep your private information private.

When shopping online, create a separate email account that is just for shopping. Use a unique password, different from any other accounts you have. Your dedicated shopping email account should be in no way affiliated with your personal, everyday email account. Also, keep records of your online shopping — print confirmation pages and e-mail confirmations.

5. Mix up your passwords.

Each shopping account, bank account, credit card account, and email account should have a unique password. Write them down and keep the information in a secure location. Unique passwords for each account make it tougher for a thief to steal your personal information.

6. Use common sense.

Make sure you use reasonable judgement when buying online and be on the lookout for spoof stores. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Take a minute or two to make sure it’s not a fake/spoof web site. If the online retailer doesn’t provide a physical address, or contact phone numbers, be cautious. Make sure you understand the refund and return policies of any online retailer you are planning to buy from, especially if it’s based overseas, just in case something were to go wrong.

“More of us than ever before will be doing our Christmas shopping online this year,” says Borrett. “But there is no reason to sacrifice security in the hunt for a great bargain. Following the simple tips above will help minimise the chances of you becoming a victim of online fraud or cyber criminals.”

Museum of Broken Relationships

Museum of Broken Relationships A museum dedicated to broken hearts has been founded in Croatia. Authors of the concept Olinka Vištica and Drazen Grubišić decided to set up the museum after consoling friends over their failed romances.
The Museum of Broken Relationships is an art concept which proceeds from the assumption that objects possess integrated fields - ‘holograms’ of memories and emotions - and intends with its layout to create a space of ‘secure memory’ or ‘protected remembrance’ in order to preserve the material and nonmaterial heritage of broken relationships. Unlike the ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers every individual the chance to overcome the emotional collapse through creation - by contributing to the Museum's collection. The individual gets rid of ‘controversial objects’, triggers of momentarily ‘undesirable’ emotions, by turning them into museum exhibits, and thereby participating in the creation of a preserved collective emotional history.
The museum has everything from romantic and touching letters to different gifts given to lovers like teddy bears and photos, but also such unusual examples as leg prosthesis donated by a war veteran who fell in love with his physiotherapist or a gall stone. Every single object on display is anonymous, and has a description / story related to the relationship that was behind. First contributions to this unusual museum collection came from Zagreb, Split, Ljubljana, Maribor, Sarajevo, Skopje, Pula, Belgrade….cities that had once, not so long ago, been in the same country which painfully fell apart in the 90s. They came from “a broken territory” often witnessing how a “break-up” of a country can influence even the most intimate part of our lives. They tell us about “small” dramas happening in the shadow of “big” historical events.

After the success of this first display this unique museum is touring the world.

The first European Indian reservation opens in Croatia

The first European Indian reservation is to open in Croatia.

The reservation, called Winnetouland, is near the Plitvice Lakes in central Croatia, inside a national park.

The reservation consists of two Indian villages. The location is the site where films about Indian Chief Winnetou were shot in the 1970s.

It is expected that the reservation will become a tourist attraction. It will also feature a Winnetou museum with different objects used during filming of the once-popular movies.
