So there we were, taking turns shouting out “Go on Nigel” as each group came past. Sooner or later we hoped to get some acknowledgement. If we encouraged a few other Nigels as well, so be it. Seeing some of them flagging a little on the hill we decided to broaden our support and instead of the polite clapping like most other spectators we tried keeping up a stream of verbal enthusiasm. It seemed to be appreciated and we got the odd comment of a “thanks” back.

Nigel did see us and we him, however briefly. He went on to achieve his best time yet. 3hours 34 minutes. Well done Nigel!
But someone else saw James too. A cyclist yelled out “James” as he went past in a blur. We have no idea who he is. Three years ago the same thing happened. Who is this cyclist and is it the same one?
