Truth Will Out
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 11:57:00 AM
I was looking through some older posts of Mik Furie's recently, when I came across one he'd written regarding (among other things) some turd stealing his content.
This led me to look for a few of my works online ... just to see (after all, my stuff isn't as well-thought-out as Mik's, but I suppose it's barely conceivable some of it might be out there without my knowledge). More out of curiosity than anything else, I decided to do some Googling.
Whether it's still there or not by the time you read this, I found this little gem, word for word the very first short story I posted on Opera. Well, not quite word for word ... the little scumbag changed the title from Clean to the inspired 'The Life and Times of Raymond'. If that wasn't exciting enough for people, he added the following introduction:
In case it's not quite visible, he says: "Haha, this is my favourite story I ever wrote, its about a 20-something year old man who suffers from OCD."
Haha! How jolly.
It's also about a little scumbag who plagarises other people's work.
"Hi. I'm Emin, most of my articles are pretty random".
That tends to happen when you rip them off people, Emin.
His one friend left a comment that they liked the story. I left a comment, too:

I like it, too. Considering I wrote it, I ought to. And the title is 'Clean', not 'The Life and Times of Raymond'.
I wouldn't have minded so much if you wanted to repost my story, but attribution would've been nice, as opposed to changing the title and hoping I wouldn't find out.
I've emailed Authspot about it to have it removed. Something to think about next time you decide to plagarise someone's work.
And my email consisted of the following:

I'd like it removed, please.
Considering you'd probably like your authors to not be plagarists, I'm sure you'd agree.
Okay, it was 2009 he did this, but dang it all ... !
I wonder what other little cocksuckers out there have stolen my content and tried to pass it off as their own? I try to post attribution when I can (often I can't find the original source), but I never claim to have made something if I didn't.
Anyhow, Emin, you're a thieving little scumbag. If I'm ever feeling potentially vengeful, I'll figure out how to dox you and let your teachers/university/boss know about your proclivity for theft.

I've found people who've stolen my Photoshop stuff through reverse image searches. Man, that pisses me off. Of course, I always write to them and threaten them with copyright infringement, etc. - whether my shizz is copyrighted or not.

I'm just glad that the owners of the site took it down. *frowns*

(Well, I didn't 'have' to ... I wanted to).
Sorry: Given this was the first time I'd ever been the victim of someone stealing my work, I had no idea how I'd react. I dashed this post off pretty quickly and was really rather grumpy as I did so. As such, I wrote some things I wouldn't normally write (I'm irrational when I'm angry, and say all sorts of weird shit, so it stands to reason I'd write irrationally when angry, too):

'Dox' is a term meaning 'to find information on someone' (find documents ('dox') about them), and is often something done by hacker collectives like Anonymous. Having nothing to do with the group, I literally have no idea how I'd go about 'doxing' someone. Nor do I want to know. Nor would I try. The post is down. As far as I'm concerned, that's the end of the matter.
But I did get angry and irrational for a few minutes there ...
That said, I actually feel a little guilty (just a little ... break out your electron microscopes to see the particle). He might've been young when he posted it, he might've done it without thinking. I'm not losing any money over it (I'm not making any money from it). One or two people who know him may see the post has been removed and find out why and he'll lose a friend, or something. And - on the whole - my little rant above comes off seeming rather childish.
Oh, well. Stiff shit.
Full marks to the people running Authspot for the quick takedown!

Since you're a graphic designer there's a chance you already know this. In that case consider this information as aimed at people who don't know.
I haven't checked if I'm victim of this. But I think I might have avoided some of it because I clearly state the copyright information when I post something important. And I'll often license it with a creative commons license, to help people repost it properly. I sometimes even license my work to individuals when they ask by e-mail.
But then again, some people have no clue about intellectual property rights, so there's no way to safeguard yourself completely.

Regardless of any apologies or removal of plagiarized work, etc., the dude is still a smelly douche bag to me.

Funny thing is, I clicked on a couple of links of his to see if he'd stolen any more of my work ... and without even trying found links to his full name, his Facebook, his Twitter, his YouTube account (reasonably decent guitar player, actually, from the 10 seconds of auto-play video I watched), the fact he's in a band that plays ... er ... cover songs ... of other people's work ...
Like I said, I'm not interested in taking things further, but it wouldn't be difficult ...

It was curious ... I had no idea how I'd react to such a thing since it'd never happened before. Oh, well ...
As shown in Mik's post, there are ways to find out if your content is being used elsewhere without your permission. This post on WordPress is extremely comprehensive and offers many methods as well as giving you options for action to take if you find your work has been stolen.
Of course, I didn't follow any of it, since I hadn't read it beforehand. I just Googled the first sentence of my story (in inverted commas to indicate to Google to search for exactly those words).
Here's another good article ...

Fact is that it's so easy to copy stuff from the internet, and I'm sure it happens all the time!
