KungFu Panda: Double Thumbs Up!

Okay, I saw it twice in two days. Saturday with my two younger kids. Sunday with my oldest. I made this sacrifice for the kids. Clearly for the kids.

...and maybe a little bit because I enjoyed the movie...

Honestly, I grew up watching Samurai Sunday chop-sockey movies. So most things martial arts, I will enjoy. This Kungfu Panda was really entertaining. Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman and the rest of the cast really hit their vocal performances well. The animation was excellent. The story had me laughing aloud in the theater...both times. Kylie, Gabs & Caleb enjoyed the film as much as I did and we find ourselves quoting from the movie as much as we can.

My favorite lines:

"It mattered not how many warriors he faced, for they were no match for his bodacity!"

"They were blinded by his awesomeness...Ack, I'm blind. He was too awesome!"

"How can we ever repay you? There is no charge for awesomeness...or attractiveness."

Those were all from the same scene, but they did a great job delivering it. Hysterical!

So, with that...I give you a very good clip:

Jet-Beetle, Jet-Minivan...Iron Man!

First, I stumbled on this video link: Jet Mini-Van

Which linked me to this:Ron Patrick's Jet-Beetle -- Make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom to see his next project...It's nuts!

But then I ended up here looking at the new trailer for Iron Man:

Good lunch run.

Hiccups

I forgot about this one. One evening, our kids decided to use Audacity to record Gabs when she had the hiccups. Hilarity ensued.

Just something to make you (me, at least) smile.

Walter Payton...Classic!

Wow, that brought back some memories of just being dumbfounded. I remember seeing many of these in various highlight films over the years. I like the fact that this particular set of clips shows the training hill behind his house that Payton used to run.

Sweetness!

Nerf-goodness

,

As some of you know, our family reached a milestone in this past year: our kids reached the age and interest in Nerf-guns. I know, I know...it was inevitable, but it finally happened. I put that milestone on par with when they were old enough & interested in Legos way back when. It's toys like these that hit that sweet spot of fun for both the kids and the parents.

So, after describing the two Nerf guns we purchased to a friend, I decided to do a review of them on epinions.com. Here they are:

As was reflected in each of the reviews, both of these are really fun. Several evenings a week, Caleb & I run around the house with minimal lighting (for better hiding/sniping opportunities) and hunt one another. We both work up a sweat, running, diving, hiding/ambushing, "matrix-ing" & laughing together along the way. Once in a while, even Kylie & Gabs will participate in some way too (often as tragic, innocent bystanders/collateral-Nerf-damage...still laughing...usually).

Enjoying the thrill of being the "hunted hunter",

Portal: Online-Flash-based version

Very cool game. I like the logic and spacial intelligence it requires. Fun, mind-bending stuff.

Portal: The Flash Version

Here's a trailer for the original game. Valve's Portal game is first person, 3d. The Flash-version is 3rd person, 2d -- not nearly as rich as the original, but the gameplay is quite fun.

Enjoy!

Cool Site: www.channelsurfing.net

, ,

http://www.channelsurfing.net/

Our TV reception is terrible. We don't have cable. We actually do have a satellite dish on our home (it was on the roof when we moved in), but don't have the service. We don't watch TV that much. We don't really want to watch enough TV to justify the monthly cost of paid-TV.

So today, the Patriots play the Chargers and our CBS reception is pretty bad. So, a bit of googling landed me at the channelsurfing.net site. It streams a small window (too bad no full screen), but at least it's clear! It also is about three or four minutes behind the live broadcast.

But at least we can tell the difference between the teams and see what the player's numbers are.

Woot!

2007-2008 First Snowman of the season

,

Snowmen...what a hoot!

This is the snowman that Caleb and I built a few weeks before Christmas. It took a couple of hours and ended up being about 9 feet tall (including the snow top hat). To make the arms, we used some small sticks to act as a form to build the shoulder around. After that, it was just packing & shaping snow into columns for arms and hands.

12 Days like you've never heard before

This is awesome!

Beatboxing...a few of the best I've heard (out of not that many...)

You know, I think it's my memories of breakdancing as a Jr. High/High School student that keeps some of the house-beatboxing-type of music still appealing to me. Just some really fun stuff out there. Here are some of the vids that I found particularly entertaining. If I wasn't aging so quickly and stiffening up, I'd probably still be trying to do the helicopter. :D.

The first guy is apparently known as Joseph Poolpo from France. Pretty amazing skils.

The second guy is Mr. Scratch. Pretty amazing skills too. The backwards sounds are a riot.

This is the Beatboxing Cook - this is pretty funny. Good humor by a talented beatboxer. Loved the deadpan presentation and the gags.

The fourth guy is Beardy Man. Pretty entertaining.

The fifth guy is Joel Turner from Australia. Pretty fun.

This last guy is Eklips also from France and he's amazing!

2007 Saints record: 6 wins & 2 losses!

,

Saints vs. Lions
Victory #5 was against against the Lions. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be at the game since I was in Atlanta. I can't wait to see the game film. I heard there was some good things that happened in the game developmentally speaking.

LAST GAME - Saints vs. Rams
HUGE game against the thus-far-undefeated Rams. They came into the game 7 & 0, while we came in 5 & 2. They were a very big team with some very good running backs. All 4 of their RBs were capable of running hard in the middle as well as getting around the ends with good speed. Their offense was very sophisticated with a lot of misdirection as well as some "student-body-sweeps" where they'd have the QB keep the ball & lead with the remaining RBs. They had some linemen that were big, strong & agile. Terry made some great adjustments on the D-Line, linebackers & safeties. Our corners (Jack & E-Dog) played stellar by turning just about everything back inside -- just as they were supposed to do. It was good to see our defensive players swarming to the ball. One of the parents, Richard T., has done a great job posting hi-res pictures after each game -- there's one where you can see the ball carrier trying to get away from Joe, while three other Saints defensive players were in the foreground attacking hard. That's great to see! It's one of those shots that shouts, "If one doesn't get you, the other three are gonna...You got no place to go but down!".

There were also some big hits in the game. Loved hearing the crack of pads! We've been telling the defense all year the secret to football: If you hit hard, it makes the game more fun, hurt less & easier. They clearly get that now. The defense caused & recovered a fumble (great job, Bobbie & Nick!). The D-linemen were getting double teamed throughout the game, but took those blocks on & split them well. Joe & Caleb were solid in the middle attacking through blockers while Hiro & Scott filled the gaps well. In fact, the 3rd Grade Commissioner (Paul) commented that he couldn't believe that these players were only in 3rd grade with the kinds of plays they were making. He was especially impressed with Hiro's open-field tackling ability at speed. Well done, Hiro! There were many others as well and it was very impressive.

The Saints offense was solidly amazing. The Commissioner also commented that this game was probably the best game Chad's called this year in terms of plays. It showed. The Saints offensive line fired out and moved guys out of the way providing huge holes for the backs to run through. Every one of them (Sean, Stephen, Michael, Robert, Timmy & Brian) blocked with all they had -- that makes a huge difference for an offense. Austin had some great up the middle runs -- pounding away, going through/over people. Patrick made some great runs through traffic and really showed his speed well. Jack continued to astound & dumbfound. In his last major run at the end of the game, he must have broken at least 4 tackles from 5 players to get the last touchdown. Henry & Austin gave MONSTROUS blocks on the defense -- it was great to see & hear the progress as they "roach-blocked" the defensive players. "Roaching" is when one player hits another hard enough that the receiving player ends up with their arms & feet flailing in the air on the way down -- the quintessential/ideal football hit. Like they say, "Football isn't just a contact sport...it's a COLLISION sport." Oh yeah!

What a great season with the kids. It was very cool to see them grow into a team from where they were when they first started. The fundamentals were grasped -- running the ball with vision, blocking smart/hard with good technique, tackling (hit, wrap, drive & roll), reading plays, attacking, swarming, getting rid of blockers, focusing on the ball, doing their job on the team -- All in all, a great job by the players. And we're looking forward to next year!

Also, I do have to say that it was great working with Sean, Chad, John, Terry, Steve, Keith & Bob -- the other coaches/dad's on the team. We settled into a good rhythm of knowing what each of us had to focus on & offer for the development of the team as well as individuals. Since I helped out with the defense, I can say that I thought Terry's defensive scheme was perfect for this level. I'm not going to give away any secrets (there's next year!), but the individual jobs were clear & simple: beat the guy in front of you, find the ball & attack. It reminded me of something Coach Swider used to say at Wheaton College:

"Every offensive play is designed to score a touchdown -- every defensive player has an offensive player assigned to block them. So to stop an offensive play, someone on the defense needs to beat their offensive player."

Good stuff.

I'll post the game films as soon as they come available.

Thankful for the great season & "Go Saints!",
