8 million Opera Mini users – Thank you

I would like to thank everyone in the community for helping us reach a milestone recently.

When we launched Opera Mini, we hoped the world would embrace it. We always believed in the power of a mobile browser, but we couldn't anticipate how eagerly so many millions have welcomed Mini. Ten months have passed since we offered it. More than 8 million people have not only downloaded, but use Opera Mini consistently. We are amazed.

But this isn't a time for me to brag. We accomplished this only because of you. We owe every bit of Mini's success to everyone who's convinced a friend, family member or colleague to try it. Thank you.

Let's not stop here. We need to get the word out to those still stuck browsing the Web on their old-fashioned WAP browsers. In the coming months we'll do more advertising and marketing, but these days Opera Mini's growth is due to the tremendous grassroots support right here in the Opera Community.

Relying on the support of everyone who uses Opera has been the key to our survival since we started this company almost 12 years ago. We would not be where we are today without your help.

Warm regards,

Jon S. von Tetzchner

Sorry, but 6.5 million of that was me. I just set it downloading over and over. It makes you look good.

Ramunas 5. December 2006, 15:33

Great, I'll have to set a loop too, lol, I'll make OM even more popular than IE, lol :D

Eddie_Lopez 5. December 2006, 15:37

Congrats are well deserved for Mini.

I'm pleased to see Opera pushing the innovation envelope with Mini. You're not content with the outstanding feat of simply just getting a browser that can run on most of the world's phones, but continue to bring a rich feature to all of us without smartphones.

I'm more excited about the future of Opera on my mobile devices. I'm excited to hear interviews and read quotes about Opera's desire to bridge the gap between the desktop experience and the mobile experience.

babox 5. December 2006, 15:42

That's a good point. There's so many people I've told about it and watched download it onto their mobiles.

Even on random forums and such, people want the application.

danigoldman 5. December 2006, 15:54

Coxy, these 8 million are active users, not the number of downloads. Nice try.

Eddie_Lopez 5. December 2006, 16:34

Coxy has 6.5 million Java capable devices.

EivindFS 5. December 2006, 16:56

and a lot of time...

coxy 5. December 2006, 17:19

That's so true. I need a job.
Anyway, back on topic boys and girls.

Congratulations are in order.
I wish I had a cake and some champagne.

Ramunas 5. December 2006, 17:28

boys and girls.

girls? where? :D

danielcs 5. December 2006, 17:45

Weeeee!! :hat:
I use a small banner to promote OM in some forums too.

jackschitt 5. December 2006, 17:51

no...
we (the users) thank you for Opera Mini!

norias 5. December 2006, 17:58

Congratulations. I just saw 3 in UK introduced their flat rate (x-tariffs) which should make browsing the web in general even cheaper and more users will start using the cellphone for browsing. The other european operators will follow during next year, so with the opera mini 3.0 you should be able to write us an happy easter message with 15m downloads.

coxy 5. December 2006, 19:02

Yeah! More UK networks need to get onto sorting their internet prices out. Its like they don't know how much to charge and it ends up being really costly some months!

Contrid 5. December 2006, 22:12

I absolutely love Opera Mini...just like everyone else.

d4n3 5. December 2006, 22:40

I actually started using Opera Mini more than Opera Mobile

The downloads and processing are quite faster on the Mini.

Investor 6. December 2006, 01:00

BRAVO !

OM3... the best play on small screens... Yes, time for promotion... time to conquer the world... :hat:

And congrats on operamini.com too. A site designed to do the trick...

AzureTimm 6. December 2006, 05:47

Good job, you lot! A free window to the world on your little phone screen, nothing can be better, I suppose...

radiojunkie 6. December 2006, 07:18

what blows me away is how universally compatible the O is  not elitist at all! there is a version for just about every phone. no 'demo only' like some browsers are til you $$$ pay for the full version. i have tried alot of them and not one comes close to OPERA

Jadd 6. December 2006, 07:45

Wow, eight million! Congratulations. :hat:

Helmers 6. December 2006, 09:28

My favorite mobile feature except calling - and it's free!

haitani 6. December 2006, 12:05

A very well deserved mark.

Looking foward to see the nine million mark

Aphile_2 6. December 2006, 17:14

Brilliant application! i really enjoy it

rodwin 6. December 2006, 21:16

Opera Mini rocks! The best application ever made. The power in your pocket, lol!

odjeide 7. December 2006, 01:51

My compliments on v.3.
There is, however, a couple of things to remark.
-I wonder why the NETWORK TEST FUNCTION has been removed?
-I have activated ANIMATIONS. I suppose it referes to GIF.
So sorry, but nothing animates on my k700i unless I am downloading the GIF to the phones memory first. Was THAT the intention? It works the same way as v.2!
What is CHANNELS found under bookmarks on the START-page? No entry!
Regards, ODJEIDE.

Dying in Verizon land on my Motorola Q! HELP!!!!

kelydia 7. December 2006, 14:05

what is it ?
maybe it is the hottest question
maybe you will throw me into the dirtiest river
or somewhat worse

radiojunkie 10. December 2006, 07:46

a question  well two questions opera...how did it come by its name? all the mobile phones ihave owned have come with wap browsers. why do WAP Browsers continue to be INCLUDED as 'the standard' type of browser on mobiles rather than a browser LIKE OPERA? OPERA gives web content more like that on my desktop. content wise, capabilities wise & appearance wise Opera is clearly ahead of the rest

IzHeReal1 11. December 2006, 00:17

I am so glad to hear/read of the success we accomplished. I'm not a person of many words, but action, good to know my footwork helps. Let's keep the word out there that Opera is the best web experience out there.

haavard 11. December 2006, 13:09

Knowledge base: "Where did you come up with the name Opera for your company?"

As for WAP vs. Web... I guess the market just needs to catch up with the future of mobile browsing

rowanrook 14. December 2006, 16:28

I just downloaded Opera for Windows XP yesterday, on the strength of how impressed I am with Opera Mini. So far I like it! It's easier to add search engines than IE 7.

mdong 18. December 2006, 11:01

I've download OperaMini 3.0 for my N70. Opera is great, thank you.

fayard 19. December 2006, 13:49
