Alpha Release of Opera 9.5

alpha release opera browser

The world's fastest...now even faster. up

Following the release of Opera 9 last year, we re-wrote Opera's rendering engine for the coming Opera 9.5 release. As a result, Opera 9.5 contains more than a year's worth of speed, standards and performance improvements. For more information we urge you to head over to the Desktop Team blog or click here if you want to get to know Kestrel better.

Are you planning to share your thoughts on the new alpha? We'll collect and share them in this blog post throughout the day. Link to your post as a comment here or submit using this form.

Official feedback should still be listed in the forums! So, don't forget to report bugs, but check the Known Issues list in the changelogs and discuss them in the forums or newsgroups first.

We hope everyone will enjoy today's release!

Only had a quick test but pages such as www.pcmag.com which made all previous versions of Opera grind to a virtual halt are now blisteringly fast. Thanks guys and congratulations on the fastest browser yet. And its only an alpha. Brilliance in a browser.

baby_2u baby2u Tuesday, September 4, 2007 8:48:04 AM

Pretty stable so far.
And ... it ist fast. Really fast.

AntonCaptainSeagull Tuesday, September 4, 2007 11:17:58 AM

I didn't even think that the internet was ABLE to load that fast no matter how well you built a browser! I can't wait for the official FULL release. This is insane, and also you need to keep the Espen set-up photo.

~*~Indigo_Myst~*~Indigo_myst Tuesday, September 4, 2007 11:18:25 AM

Holy Cow - this is good for a first release... I have crappy dial up and woo hoo - the pages load so fast!!

Had to reload my web page as it went right out of whack, but second time round it's there as quick as a flash and looks normal.

Stevesgunhouse Tuesday, September 4, 2007 11:27:57 AM

Minor bug ... in the Linux version, the "document" icon doesn't seem to be using transparency (in the corner of a restored window, or in the menu bar if "Show close button on each tab" is disabled).

Maulkin Tuesday, September 4, 2007 11:48:31 AM

Wow!

I really lie the right click option for opening the page in another browser. (e.g. the browsers you have actually installed) wink

Al BustanBustan Tuesday, September 4, 2007 11:51:03 AM

Very nice, Thanks for sharing.

It's so faaaaaaast! bigsmile

Zolizoligrg89 Tuesday, September 4, 2007 12:34:55 PM

btw. why is that download button on your post only for windows? It won't change to "download opera for linux" on Ubuntu...

Al BustanBustan Tuesday, September 4, 2007 12:44:41 PM

PozsonyiMarkCsendesMark Tuesday, September 4, 2007 12:47:14 PM

I can't wait for the final!! smile

Merijn Tuesday, September 4, 2007 12:56:35 PM

Thanks, it's so fast!!

mihirtaurius1 Tuesday, September 4, 2007 1:04:04 PM

sweet!!!!

Im on a 2 megabit connection, so i never had any problems with most sites. But some sites stubbornly refuse to load fast. Seemes like i was using dialup for any regular sites.

But omg omg omg opera rendered all three of my favorite "slow" sites sooo faaaassttt!!!

I've already begun making my new wand on opera 9.5 smile

mirobe Tuesday, September 4, 2007 1:12:39 PM

9.5 Seems to be running fine.

It would be great if you could sync online opera settings/blocking filters as well.

Thanks for the new version!

the_N Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:04:50 PM

Best first release ever.
No problems until now, great job and thanks for making Opera more awesome than it already was smile

snapper Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:07:25 PM

I'm running FreeBSD 6.2 stable on i386. I've just moved to 9.5 alpha and it seems to consume all available CPU resources =(

ALLY G.ALLY_G Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:11:35 PM

Yooohoooooooo happy Great! party
Thank you very much. smile

KarenNerak Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:31:54 PM

Christopher DaSilvadannii Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:45:18 PM

Hey Espen! Am I gonna keep my config & bookmarks?

Cris Diasemperial Tuesday, September 4, 2007 2:48:59 PM

I've started using it today and so far so good. I haven't had the opportunity to give it a good go but one feature that I really think should be added is a spell check option.

The Last SheikahTheLastSheikah Tuesday, September 4, 2007 3:34:57 PM

Spell check can already be installed, I believe, but I'm not sure exactly how...

I've just installed it. Remaking all my IRC accounts and stuff is taking a while. -_-

Uptonuptonpark Tuesday, September 4, 2007 3:38:04 PM

Downloading now...

can't wait...

Jose Mejiajmblade Tuesday, September 4, 2007 4:35:19 PM

CapZap Tuesday, September 4, 2007 5:16:29 PM

Hmmm. Keyboard shortcuts don't work for me. Anyone else have this problem?

experttease Tuesday, September 4, 2007 5:36:45 PM

GhostRidah Tuesday, September 4, 2007 5:37:14 PM

uǝʞɐsɹoɟuǝʌıƃɹoɟpoƃgodpimp Tuesday, September 4, 2007 5:38:01 PM

Seeing as its alpha, will it crash and corrupt my computer?
Thanks for any responses... (i love that cartman avy, its sooo wicked)

uǝʞɐsɹoɟuǝʌıƃɹoɟpoƃgodpimp Tuesday, September 4, 2007 5:41:13 PM

Dear Opera Winfrey,
Your bird better not make me crash, as i am not insured against Kestrel or any wildlife accidents :-)

www.nenelinux.tk ®nenericardo Tuesday, September 4, 2007 6:07:37 PM

I love opera !

Jamesleushino Tuesday, September 4, 2007 6:27:19 PM

I'm impressed. This release appears very stable, has loaded all of my favority pages without a hitch and is about as fast as I've ever surfed before... actually the pages are definitely rendering faster than previously. When it becomes a final product, I am certain it will become my default browser (sorry, Firefox).

Mind is a razorblade...SoundOfVision Tuesday, September 4, 2007 6:52:49 PM

I just downloaded it, and it seems awesome! Had to download all widgets and skins again, but never mind, I didn't have many of them, so it wasn't a problem. smile

There's one thing bothered me a bit with old version too: when I'm looking at my bookmarks I need to click on 'More Items' - would it be possible in near future to just scroll down instead of going down at the bottom and clicking 'More items'? I have lots of folders and subfolders so it bothers me a bit.

Anyway, great job people! Keep getting better and better!

When can we expect Beta?
up

Christopher DaSilvadannii Tuesday, September 4, 2007 7:22:25 PM

I won't lose my settings and favourites?

A. DudaADuda Tuesday, September 4, 2007 7:33:59 PM

This is great, but I think I'll wait for the final version wink

Be KaySgtDirtbag Tuesday, September 4, 2007 8:10:14 PM

I must say I'm VERY impressed by this alpha, great work!

But there is still one feature that I'd love to see in opera and that is Firefox's way of handlin RSS feeds in a drop-down menu in the personal bar:
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/850/rssffij4.png

It's more intuitive than Opera's way of handling RSS feeds, so I have to use both browsers:
Opera for general browsing and Firefox to check my RSS feeds.

But if Opera gets that feature sometime in the feature, I can finally settle on one browser. : )
