My Opera Updated (With Style!)

my opera january release

Drop It Like It's Hot

First of all, you'll notice a new site navigation with drop down menus (or tabs, if you are surfing with a mobile). We've added these menus to make it easier for you to find stuff between your own— and the community pages. You'll find all community related things under "Explore", personal things under "My page", and Opera stuff under... (yes, you got it) "Opera".

The new menu also brings a stronger branding to all of our pages with a sweet My Opera logo on top. This has been done to create a feel of one community.

Vroom, Vroom, Faster Loading

My Opera now loads faster than before because we've optimized the default design (images, format, etc.). This is the first step toward building a faster and more efficient site.

Haven't I Seen You Somewhere Before?

You can now easily find other My Opera members from your own country!

All you have to do is make sure you've selected a country from your profile setting and you will be able to click the country name to view members from your country. We've even added features for sorting by last updated status, name, forum posts, or newest members (if you want to see the oldest members, just remove &inv=1 from the URL).

Fred has written a complete changelog for those interested in reading about all the changes.

We hope all of you will enjoy our newest release.

First bug: I have new private messages and the url at the top of this page points to http://my.opera.com/community/messages/

MossMan 10. January 2008, 17:26

Err... where will "news" appear now?

Edit: RTFM... "small bar below the menu". Okidoki.

Dr. Flay 10. January 2008, 17:30

Yes, what has happened to "news"?
I can't find my "watched items". Which is where i was, when you just changed over!

Groovy 10. January 2008, 17:38

Wow, it's super fast and super elegant! I like it. :hat:

Fredrik Andersson 10. January 2008, 17:38

remco, confirmed. but it only seems to happen on this very page when "community" is the owner of this blog

Alexei 10. January 2008, 17:39

Neato!

Ruben Garcia 10. January 2008, 17:43

I don't like the new topbar, it's too wide u.u

Lars Kleinschmidt 10. January 2008, 17:47

the site randomly shows "2 new messages", after a reload it's gone. there's no unread messages in my inbox

Elvis Kõll 10. January 2008, 17:48

Yeah .. saw the same thing.
Top bar is little bit too wide for me also ..
But maybe I can get used to it ..

Remco Lanting 10. January 2008, 17:50

@larskl: You sure they're not in your spam folder?

I do have two unread messages there.

-( + )- 10. January 2008, 17:52

Wow! Very nice! Congrats!

Lars Kleinschmidt 10. January 2008, 17:53

@remco: yes, i'm sure. there's no unread messages anywhere. the "2 new messages" thing appears randomly only.

another issue: there's 3 different button designs used in forums now. could you please make them all have the same style?

Login isn't working with Wand.

(Opera 9.25 and 9.5b on Mac)

yeeliberto 10. January 2008, 18:30

very nice design both for computer and cellphone.

If anybody want to look the mobile design press shift + F11

Maulkin 10. January 2008, 18:37

Thank you ! :smile:penguin

Login wand does not work on Debian Linux Opera 9.5 bld 1737 either - otherwise

tinhoy 10. January 2008, 18:45

Drop down menus are near unusable when viewing with Fit-to-width. They appear all squished and linewrapped to me.

Looks great in non-FTW, though.

Marco 10. January 2008, 18:51

Cool...

1174906lby 10. January 2008, 18:53

And it keeps telling me I have 2 messages and giving me a 404 when I click and logging me out? Otherwise, still good

Fredrik Andersson 10. January 2008, 18:55

the messages bug will soon be fixed. just wait a bit...

1174906lby 10. January 2008, 18:56

No hurry - thanks!

OJulien 10. January 2008, 19:15

Thank you!

Andres Rodriguez Guapacha 10. January 2008, 19:18

And what a change!!

Thanks a lot... it was worth waiting!!!

D1sasterp1ece 10. January 2008, 19:29

Good, but where did the access keys on the homepage go? ^^

Violeta Rosales 10. January 2008, 19:34

Well.. This is a huge surprise! Nice work Fred .

The Dark Furie 10. January 2008, 19:41

This is gonna cost most mobile users a fortune in extra data... :frown: Gotta reload the entire page to pull the menus down.

Looks sleek enough though. And has anyone else checked out their subscriptions list yet? Didn't know I'd commented in so many places. :yikes:

Andres Rodriguez Guapacha 10. January 2008, 19:45

Drop downs menu is not used for mobiles, just tabs... take a peek at the changelog...

Phred 10. January 2008, 19:47

Thanks for making the header much smaller. Anyone using my myopera-optimations script, please read this to make it play nice with the new layout.

The Dark Furie 10. January 2008, 19:54

Changelog can say what it wants FoxM. I'm using Opera Mini 4 on my mobile and the drop down menus are in place. It reloads the entire page to pull them down.

The Dark Furie 10. January 2008, 19:55

I believe a p: is in order.

Dan 10. January 2008, 20:02

I'm sorry, but I miss the instant notification of activity(ies) in the old top bar. If there were new messages or comments, I knew as soon as I logged in. Now, I have to click a menu, then click a topic, and it's additional steps and time I have to waste to find or get feedback that used to be instantaneous. Please give us the old bar back - please?

Nicolas Mendoza 10. January 2008, 20:04

stonefingers: they should show in the top bar still?

Haavard 10. January 2008, 20:05

stonefingers, are you referring to news and private messages? They appear in the bar below the top bar.

flamingo-rinse 10. January 2008, 20:07

OK : Loathed it at first, getting used to it now - but still prefer the previous look. But that's just me. Good work - it certainly is slick.

Fredrik Andersson 10. January 2008, 20:10

Furie. that's how Mini4 renders javascript. I'm not sure it will cost you more. Consider that if you were on your own page on the old site and wanted to go to the forums, then you had to first go to the community home page and from there you had to click forums. It was just as many page loads. With the new menus there are many scenarios when you will actually get less clicks.

The Dark Furie 10. January 2008, 20:11

If it helps, it's yellow.
