BBC Click

bbc click

Back in December we had a visit by the BBC who were here filming for a story about the mobile Web. That segment - starring Christen Krogh - will appear today on BBC Click. BBC Click is aired on both BBC within the UK and BBC World TV.

The show begins tonight on BBC World TV at 2030 GMT. It's also viewable online at the Click website at approximately 9 PM GMT.

It airs several more times throughout the weekend and the week following, and you can use this schedule to find other times in your location.

So, remember to tune in tonight. yes

About bloody time. I'm sick of people talking about mobile web and not mentioning Opera. irked BBC News did the same thing not long ago and received a few complaints that Opera Mini was left out.

I don't like when somebody mention Opera at the end of the browser list. The example is a recent A List Apart article "Beyond DOCTYPE: Web Standards, Forward Compatibility, and IE8" by Aaron Gustafson. Here's the quote:

This will put its rendering on par with other browsers that have passed Acid2, including Safari, iCab, Konqueror, and Opera.

I don't think iCab or Konqueror have more browser market share than Opera. It must be stopped! norris

Aleksandersen Thursday, January 31, 2008 9:27:26 PM

What was that he said about Opera Mini using a quarter of Norway’s something? Total bandwidth, was it? Is Opera Mini really using a ¼!?

Madiseestlane Thursday, January 31, 2008 10:06:50 PM

You can stream it now.

To Aleksandersen:
It seems he said that the servers where pages are compressed use same amount of bandwidth as 1/4 of Norway. But that is what you said actually smile

This is on the BBC iPlayer for the next six days if anyone missed it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b008z678.shtml

damned sad

According to their help page, to use the BBC Iplayer you must be running Windows XP or worse AND you must be using Internet Explorer (since it uses ActiveX). It seems you also need to be running Windows Media Player (though I'm not 100% certain of that). In other words the BBC is getting a kickback from Microsoft, or someone at the BBC on the take.

Quite frankly, someone should report the BBC to the EU Competition Commission for forcing people into the arms of what the EU has already declared to be an illegal monopoly.

That was the case, until recently. The reason it was like this was because it used some strange ActiveX control, as you said. However, they have since made the BBC iPlayer a flash-based streaming site, which works on everything (even Linux) and just last week, enabled downloads for Firefox users as well as Internet Explorer users.

Downloads, however, are still DRM-based Windows Media files with a self-destruction / expiry time on them of 7 days.

hellloooooo

stephenpbarker Sunday, February 3, 2008 10:50:26 AM

BBC iPLayer now works well in Linux provided flash is up to date - the pc I am tying on has version 7 and will not play, but all the computers I have with version 9 work.

The petition many of us signed worked this time.

stephenpbarker Sunday, February 3, 2008 11:32:49 AM

For a Linux that will play anything as supplied, and includes Opera try:

http://www.granularlinux.com/

Its on DVD only, which can be supplied by
