Translators Wanted

opera

We're very proud that our browser(s) are used all over the world. However, we still have a lot of work to do to reach out to new Opera users — especially non-English speaking Web surfers. So far, we've created mini-websites in multiple languages. But our goal for 2008 is to go all out, with much more extensive localization of opera.com (and our other sites) into many different languages (within our target markets). To do this, we are taking a community-driven approach and we're asking for your help because you know what Opera stands for and how our messaging should be like in your own native language.

Users in different countries have routinely contacted us; asking to help translate our websites. Except a small team of volunteer translators, we haven't been able to accommodate most of those requests... Until now.

We're now implementing a new system that will allow many more to help us produce localized and translated Web sites.

Join the Team

We're actively looking for volunteer translators from different regions and languages. Our goal is to translate opera.com into:

  • Chinese,
  • Russian,
  • German,
  • Polish,
  • Korean,
  • Hindi
  • Japanese,
  • Spanish,
  • Portuguese, and
  • Indonesian

If you speak any of these languages (and English), we can really use your help.

We care about other languages too, but the languages above our are first priority.

edit: After considering your feedback and going over our plans, we've decided to add Indonesian to the list! Furthermore, with so many people volunteering to help with so many languages, we will see if we can find a way to accomodate more languages sooner. When we work something out, we'll be sure to let you know.

To test the system, we're launching a pilot project to translate opera.com into two forms of Chinese, before following up with other languages after that.

Ok, Cool. What's in it for me?

You'll be a member of the Opera Translation Team. We can't pay you, but we can provide you with special gear and you'll be publicly recognized as a member of the team. You'll also get to work firsthand with Opera employees and take part in the behind-the-scenes action of what we do here at Opera.

What we're Looking For:

Enthusiastic, self-motivated translators who have excellent English-language skills and exceptional writing ability in their native language (see the list above). All translations will be reviewed and edited by professional editors and given final review by a marketing agency. As such, we ask that our volunteers are willing to contribute, but not retain ownership of the final translation copy.

Our slots are limited, and we plan to get started right away, so if you think you can contribute to this cause, please send us a translation sample or learn more.

interesting idea...
I guess it will be something similar to what google had to translate all their pages. I took part in some of that...

I could help with Serbian (which is also understandable in Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro, and to some extent the remaining Yugoslavian states - Macedonia and Slovenia), but it's not in the list for now

anyway good luck

Maulkin: Spanish is the second most spoken language on Earth after Chines, spoken by about 400.000.000 native speakers. English is on 3rd place, by the way.

Most russians speak English.

Sign me in, I have translated several documents on the opera's spanish forums

TheAtilla 12. February 2008, 19:33

I think 'priority' is intended to mean exactly that - while the list of languages might be first target - it shouldn't mean it'll stay exclusive to them.

Unggulkada 12. February 2008, 19:41

Bahasa Indonesia!!!!

Opera in Bahasa Indonesia would be a major success here. ur browsers will be on every internet cafes  trust me :D

sigh.

Maulkin 12. February 2008, 22:58

I'm not that much surprises that french isn't on this first list because French speaking countries aren't a big market and have few opera user compared to the russian or chinese one (or even hindi with the billion indian on earth).

Just to make some pression on the Opera Team. p:

tetrageene 12. February 2008, 23:19

I think you should add Indonesian language to your list

Lawmune 13. February 2008, 00:13

Thanks, everyone! The response has been great so far. We're starting small, but if everything goes well, we will definitely open up this program to get even more languages represented. (yes, we know about and love our users in Indonesia)
