April release
Wednesday, April 9, 2008 2:06:40 PM

For this release, most of the work is done on our back—end code (by our talented developers). We're currently prepping My Opera for "the future" — to better handle queries and file storage (among other things). More details on this soon.
In addition we've also done some design- and usability changes to the files section, which was badly needed. To check it out head over to your account ("My page" -> "Account") and click on "Files".
New file upload policy
Over time we've recorded abuse on some of our services, and therefore we've been forced to update our file upload policy. This should not affect those of you who use My Opera legitimately.
In particular we now operate under a zero-tolerance regarding "Hot-Linking" of files (linking a file that is located on My Opera, but on another website) is strictly forbidden.
For security reasons, some potentially harmful file types (such as "*.exe", "*.bat" etc), as well as video files, are no longer allowed to upload on My Opera. We've received reports of spammers, scammers, etc. who has abused My Opera to spread harmful files such as these.
Short, but still a changelog:
- Our files system has gone through a major revamp.
- If you edit a blog post (that was created by someone else) the preview used to show you as the author instead of the original author. This has now been fixed.
- Amount of forum posts is now displayed correctly (especially useful for active users like Tamil.
).

and lets say i post a file on my blog and a random googler jacks the link and hot links elsewhere are we the members going to feel the wrath due to someone elses actions? and if not how do you determine which one of us is linking from some random person?

I post at to many forums to remember if I have ever done this before. And there isn't any way for me to find out without dropping by your office I guess. Are you sending PMs or deleting those files if it has already been done in or just denying the requests? I really don't know, sorry.
On a side note, what about hot-linking the other way? (File on different server, link on MyOpera?)

The blog posts clear the text field before it posts, although previews work.
EDIT - either this was an anomaly or it's fixed now.
Uploading files it refuses to show the file upload form.
Submitted a bug report to Opera Mini too.

Good point about the file uploads, though, I hadn't thought of that... we'll fix.

Possibly an anomaly affecting only me (are there any other sorts
Good news on the file system getting fixed for mobile users. I know a few who already exclusively upload using 4.1. Thanks for the quick response.

This is also hurting my amazon reading posts. Well, I have a wordpress blog in the making. I was going to keep this blog and link my wordpress blog to Opera, but it looks like what I am doing here may go elsewhere (I really do not want to leave). Blogger? Typepad? etc..You may have a new blogger joining your ranks.
And this was the new cool addition to my.opera.com that was holding up my blog post today? Please tell me I am misunderstanding something.

What we've disabled is the ability to upload some harmfull files such as some video files. A lot of people abused My Opera because of this, and upload content which violated our terms of service (in other words: there was a lot of porn and phising sites uploaded and spread using My Opera). To gain a faster and more stable site we've disabled upload and hot-linking of such files for now.
We're working on solutions how to give legit users the ability to use all our services as intended.

I'm kinda worried about this one
"In particular we now operate under a zero-tolerance regarding "Hot-Linking" of files (linking a file that is located on My Opera, but on another website) is strictly forbidden."
I mean, I put all my photos that are worth saving in my blog and then I link to them on my other blogs and websites... ...I mean, on other blogs you can't always upload directly from your harddrive. Also, when you're making like a profile or something... ...Well, they don't usually have an option to upload a file directly to the profile, you have to hotlink from a blog or album or something.
Hm, I guess I better look at it as kind of when you go camping, you have to adjust to something different and more primitive... ...Like, maybe I just use pictures uploaded on the same community or from some community that says it's OK to upload images for use on other websites.
Personally, I don't have photobucket or flickr or whatever people use these days... ...Hm... ...Well, well, I guess I better just try to adjust to this... ...Though I guess it is possible I have a few pictures somewhere, in old blog posts on other websites... ...I don't very happily edit old blog posts... ...Hm... ...Well, well... ...I'll try to adjust to this and see what I can do.

Yes, we are aware of this issue, but we need to emphasize on stability and increased performance. We're in the progress of writing a Q&A article on the devblog which hopefully will answer many of the questions we've received so far.Anyway, we do this in order to prevent hot-linking of illegal files which may harm users. Thanks for understanding!

Does zero tolerance mean that user may be punished, or is zero-tolerance just a server rule that 404s any non my.opera.com referrers?
Espen André ØverdahlEspenAO # Wednesday, April 9, 2008 7:32:06 PM
There's no "punishment" or anything similar.

Another point, what will happen to video files that you have already uploaded to My files and linked to in a post on your blog?

This is killing users. This is a sign of monopolizing My Opera. I am not going to use Opera's file manager feature anymore. Plus, I am shifting all my files over to a better place where I can have better control over my files.
