My Opera news » Dear friends

Dear friends

The Opera logo

A few days ago we had the pleasure of giving you Opera 9.5. More than five million of you have downloaded it since the launch. We are humbled by the outpouring of interest.

It has been an incredible success for us, but also an incredible testament to the strength of this community! Not only have you helped spread the word in forums and blogs, but you've also reached out to people new to Opera and given them the Web's fastest and most powerful browser.

Opera 9.5 includes many improvements suggested by this community. Your feedback and support has always been and will always continue to be crucial in our mission to make the Web a better place for all. We are the original browser innovators and intend to remain in that position. Please help us by continuing to spread the word.

We know you made a choice to use Opera and be a part of our community. We appreciate that and we are committed to earning your trust every time you open an Opera browser, visit our sites, or use our services.

I thank you all.

Thanks! Been using it since the snapshots started. Much better than 9.27!

Just one thing though..in order to continue being browser innovators and remain in that position we need to gain several basic features (which have been repeatedly requested) to make all of our lives easier...such as auto-update, built-in inline spell check with no extra configurations and remove the click-to-activate! Hope to seem some more innovations after these are included to catch us up to speed in those areas.

Histakel 18. June 2008, 23:11

to Kyleabaker: I think I've recently read on some Czech server that someone in the U.S.A. has patented the feature that an embedded object is active by default so it would mean for Opera to pay someone in order to remove the click-to-activate feature. I think Microsoft has paid for the patent so they offer IE7 users do donwload some pack to remove this feature.

It's working great for me!

I LOVE OPERA  So thank you guys for such a great browser!

Kyle Baker 18. June 2008, 23:50

@Histakel
See --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eolas

Internet Explorer and Firefox both do not require click-to-activate. I'm not sure about Safari, but I assume they do not either...neither should Opera.

Efekan 18. June 2008, 23:53

Thanks a lot. Opera is the best. I love my Opera

Thank you Jon for programming Multitorg Opera back in the days. It has evolved to the best browser EVER.

jrmoir 19. June 2008, 00:31

I purchased each version of Opera since Ver 3.6 until it became free. Clearly I love Opera but 9.27 to 9.5 upgrade stopped my desktop. With the Opera.exe process using over 95% of the cpu cycles (frequently over 98%) I have had to remove Opera 9.5 from the machine. I fear that this has caused loss of email records going back many years. :-(

Legally speaking, IE is the only company out of those mentioned that have licensed the technology - Firefox are technically in violation of the patent. Although Eolas have said they'd issue a royalty-free license to non-commercial entities, they've never actually issued one to Firefox.

SO TRUE!! Shame on crappy browsers who copied tabbed browsing (and other features) and claim they invented it.

Thank you Jon and Opera team for this great product!

I love Opera, don't get me wrong! And any time there's a new version out, I jump at the chance to download and install it (not quite brave enough to try the betas or RCs). I've been waiting for 9.5 for (seemingly) ages, with great anticipation! But, now that it's out, I've found that I'm ... still waiting.

Reading both the comments in this and other posts (things where people complain of huge CPU usage, sites they used to be able to visit being lost to them and vanishing mail and suchlike), I find I'm a bit ... wary to try this version. Which is a shame, because I've always trusted Opera in the past. Unfortunately, I'm now thinking it might be better to wait for version 10 to come out before upgrading 9.27.

Closer to home, my wife downloaded and installed 9.5 on her XP SP2 box (I'm using 9.27 on my (yay, finally got a new computer) Compaq Presario C731TU Vista Basic machine) and the check/send button for the mail constantly reads 'stop'. Nothing seems to be happening in the background (mail isn't constantly checking itself, and it's only programmed to check manually), it just isn't showing right. Admittedly, she does have the Marina skin, so I don't know if that's a skin issue, or what. And we can check mail (though the button still doesn't change) ...

On a related note, this 'mail for user@suchandsuch.com' is kind of annoying when we've already set up folders and filters and suchlike (is deleting it safe, or will that delete all the mail?). And we can't close Quick Reply like we used to be able to. And there still isn't an option for File > Save > Save As Type> Save With Images as default (or, at least, I can't set it as default).

So ... although I'm still kinda chomping at the bit to try it out, it doesn't seem ... ready ... somehow. I'm not saying it wasn't readyfor release. Just that that's my perception. So - unfortunately - I think I'll be waiting at least until there's maybe some sort of update to the update (9.5 SP1? ) Or until 10.

I swear, my teeth are gonna get worn down by chomping at the bit ...

Thank you opera! For all new friends I have now, and for all the time I spend in Opera community!

macphreak 19. June 2008, 10:41

I love Opera and have been using for like ever.......

However ther are a few things that bug me about the latest update.

These are the 2 major bugs IMO

Shortcuts for speed dial don't need to open up new tabs. I use them extensively and end up having to close tabs I didn't want opened. If I wanted a new tab I would use the shortcut for a new tab which shows us the speeddial anyways.

Command click on a link opens up a new tab/window because you want it to. Why then does it show you the warning about popup windows that you have to click on to get it to open?.

Serola 19. June 2008, 10:42

I've been an Opera user since way back at the Quarterdeck company. The company has long ago passed into history, but Opera lives on.

blue.durian 19. June 2008, 12:32

Anyone having trouble using Windows Live Hotmail with Opera? Usually upon loading, it sometimes just stops. A refresh will cure it, but would be nice if that wasn't necessary.

pat512 19. June 2008, 12:59

I've been a loyal Opera user since version 2.something. I promptly download and install each new release. But I'm going to have to downgrade to 9.27.

Why? Because ctrl-F5 (reload all tabs) was disabled, for no obvious reason, and I don't see a way to get that function through menus. For the way I browse, that's major functionality lost.

Unhappy customer.

Denis Edward Chesney 19. June 2008, 13:53

Thank You Jon and The Team.using Opera 9.5 for the 3rd day today.upgraded from 9.27. It's
been pretty good as I use mobile GPRS on my laptop. which is a slow connection ( Ind Airtel ) as I dont have a broadband connec'on
if there is any competition for Kestrel it comes from Opera Mini.

clinis 19. June 2008, 13:57

I do not know how to find the Opera, but I know that is the best browser that has.
