Dear friends
Wednesday, 18. June 2008, 21:09:59

A few days ago we had the pleasure of giving you Opera 9.5. More than five million of you have downloaded it since the launch. We are humbled by the outpouring of interest.
It has been an incredible success for us, but also an incredible testament to the strength of this community! Not only have you helped spread the word in forums and blogs, but you've also reached out to people new to Opera and given them the Web's fastest and most powerful browser.
Opera 9.5 includes many improvements suggested by this community. Your feedback and support has always been and will always continue to be crucial in our mission to make the Web a better place for all. We are the original browser innovators and intend to remain in that position. Please help us by continuing to spread the word.
We know you made a choice to use Opera and be a part of our community. We appreciate that and we are committed to earning your trust every time you open an Opera browser, visit our sites, or use our services.
I thank you all.
Jon S. von Tetzchner

Just one thing though..in order to continue being browser innovators and remain in that position we need to gain several basic features (which have been repeatedly requested) to make all of our lives easier...such as auto-update, built-in inline spell check with no extra configurations and remove the click-to-activate! Hope to seem some more innovations after these are included to catch us up to speed in those areas.

Internet Explorer and Firefox both do not require click-to-activate. I'm not sure about Safari, but I assume they do not either...neither should Opera.

Reading both the comments in this and other posts (things where people complain of huge CPU usage, sites they used to be able to visit being lost to them and vanishing mail and suchlike), I find I'm a bit ... wary to try this version. Which is a shame, because I've always trusted Opera in the past. Unfortunately, I'm now thinking it might be better to wait for version 10 to come out before upgrading 9.27.
Closer to home, my wife downloaded and installed 9.5 on her XP SP2 box (I'm using 9.27 on my (yay, finally got a new computer) Compaq Presario C731TU Vista Basic machine) and the check/send button for the mail constantly reads 'stop'. Nothing seems to be happening in the background (mail isn't constantly checking itself, and it's only programmed to check manually), it just isn't showing right. Admittedly, she does have the Marina skin, so I don't know if that's a skin issue, or what. And we can check mail (though the button still doesn't change) ...
On a related note, this 'mail for user@suchandsuch.com' is kind of annoying when we've already set up folders and filters and suchlike (is deleting it safe, or will that delete all the mail?). And we can't close Quick Reply like we used to be able to. And there still isn't an option for File > Save > Save As Type> Save With Images as default (or, at least, I can't set it as default).
So ... although I'm still kinda chomping at the bit to try it out, it doesn't seem ... ready ... somehow. I'm not saying it wasn't readyfor release. Just that that's my perception. So - unfortunately - I think I'll be waiting at least until there's maybe some sort of update to the update (9.5 SP1?
I swear, my teeth are gonna get worn down by chomping at the bit ...

However ther are a few things that bug me about the latest update.
These are the 2 major bugs IMO
Shortcuts for speed dial don't need to open up new tabs. I use them extensively and end up having to close tabs I didn't want opened. If I wanted a new tab I would use the shortcut for a new tab which shows us the speeddial anyways.
Command click on a link opens up a new tab/window because you want it to. Why then does it show you the warning about popup windows that you have to click on to get it to open?.

Why? Because ctrl-F5 (reload all tabs) was disabled, for no obvious reason, and I don't see a way to get that function through menus. For the way I browse, that's major functionality lost.
Unhappy customer.
