Phantom of the Opera

First of all, well done to the community for answering the call for Halloween speed dial backgrounds with such short notice! After only a few days, there more entrants than I expected, and the end decision was a hard one. There were some truly sinister takes on the theme, and some wonderful artwork, but Jon's favorite of all was Cole Henley's 'Phantom of the Opera II'.

Cole's great use of public domain artwork, colour and textures, along with the subtle use of the new Opera logo, made it a sure winner. Well done to Cole, and indeed to all the entrants. Please keep making those Speed Dial backgrounds and sharing them with the community!

Also kudos ki-to for making the great "IBIS Inspire" skin we based this custom Opera build on! Keep 'em coming!

How to install if you are already using Opera:

If you already have Opera, you need to backup 3 files and rename them in order to get the Halloween experience:

  1. Open menu "Help" » "About Opera".
  2. Find the path to the catalog with user data ("Path" » "Preferences") and copy the address
  3. Close Opera
  4. Open the catalog with user data found above (for Windows: "Start" » "Run" » paste the address you copied before)
  5. Remove or rename the following files:
    • bookmarks.adr
    • speeddial.ini
    • operaprefs.ini
  6. Install the customized version (without removing the previous one)

If you are not an Opera user, simply download and follow the instructions.

What about my entry? I've been working constantly on it since the contest was announced. Only interupted by work and sleep. I actually drew every single thing on the entry on paper with very crude tools, then scanned it. Except the moon and the stars which are public domain artwork. After that, the drawings were painstakingly cleaned and put together in Paint.NET.

But that's not all. What about every single entry on the first page on the comments? Don't they at least deserve a mention? I'm sure they've been putting their blood, sweat and tears into their submissions as well.

What would give me some peace of mind, is to be told these entries were considered. But as things look now. I believe they were completely overlooked. I know it's a mistake to rant my anger out like this. But it needs to be heard, just like Halloween needs to be celebrated.
Halloween is about celebrating every forgotten saint. Consider this the anger of every forgotten artist in this challenge.

Ask and i may tell but for now you can call of anon 30. October 2009, 19:32

why would you need to do as per instructions, just right click and save the file or when you have the file open properly right click and it will give you option to set it as a speed dial background.

i wouldn't go deleting those folders either you will lose the bookmarks etc.

completely unnecessary instructions.

I installed this then went back to the latest snapshot but the title bar still says "Opera Halloween Browser" but it is build 1848. Any ideas?

mohammad hasan 31. October 2009, 02:06

Opera Halloween Browser

Steve 31. October 2009, 06:29

On first run, I saw the regular skin and no speed dial background, after restarting Opera I finally saw the new skin and speed dial background. Did see the new speed dial entries, and added bookmarks.

Oh, Daniel? opera:config, look for Title and click on Default, then Save.

Kirbylover4000 31. October 2009, 08:32

I guess linux users can use wine (WINdows Emulator) from http://winehq.org/
