You are using the text input provided by the browser itself that is optimised for web use.
However if you prefer the native text input then you can go to "settings", "advanced", and turn "inline editing" off.

@wolfigor, i'm not sure how pressing space and getting a 1 can be considered optimising for web use. I have tried turning off "in-line editing", but that causes confusion with the soft-keys. (The labels are correct when using the native editor and swapped when not editing)

It may have taken years to arrive but it looks good, works great. After turning off inline edit, t9 works too. I just hope the final version doesn't take another 5 years.

I love opera.
I use opera everywhere,
i fight for opera,
but i currenty cannot afford to buy a new smartphone replacing my N70 which is s60v2,
and there are thousands more users like me who own a s60v2, N70 in particular, opera knows it better, aint? The number of users using mini on N70 revealed in the state of mobile web report tells itself.
Finally i want to request opera, that N70 has the power and resources,
please look if there is any possibility to port opera mobile 10 to N70.
Will love opera always....
