Tomorrow, the grand opening of Norway´s new opera and ballet house takes place in Oslo. We felt that we needed to remind people of where the real Opera house is, so we put up a banner on our architecture-designed office building to reflect this:
After the recent release, some of you asked for clarifications, particularly about hotlinking. We will try to explain a bit more what these recent changes means for you.
Hot-linking
By "hot-linking" we mean uploading files on your MyOpera files section and then making links to them from other external sites. Of course, there's nothing wrong with this. It's just that spammers abuse by creating hundreds of fake accounts (even by hand!), uploading their crazy stuff and then doing their business, sucking bandwidth.
Last release changes
For this release (that went live on April 9th), there were no changes in the hotlinking policy, as strange it might seem. We currently don't allow hotlinking of:
videos
executables
rar/zip/... archives
Some of you were wondering why you can't upload and/or hotlink photos. Please note that:
you can publish/upload your photos or MP3 files on MyOpera.
you can hotlink them!
we are not going to punish anyone! This is not a punishment community, it's a sharing community...
When someone tries to hotlink an existing video file (for instance) stored on MyOpera to an external site, we simply avoid serving the file. Nothing more than that.
Uploading videos
Uploading of videos has been blocked. But this is really a minor change, since if you tried to upload a video to your "Files" section and then tried to hotlink it from other sites, it wouldn't work. As some of you reported, existing videos are still served within MyOpera, and this is the intended behaviour.
The reason for blocking upload of videos is mostly abuse.
We are working on solutions for this.
Uploading MP3s
Some users thought that we also blocked MP3 files. Unfortunately, this is a bug in the new file upload section. We are working on it. It seems that some MP3 files are not recognized as such. By the time this is published, we hope to have this fixed.
Embedding
We all like to have YouTube videos on our blog posts:
This is only a documentation bug. Will be fixed soon.
In the end
Speak with us, so we know your concerns, because in the end, the My Opera Community is yours, be nice to it!
In this article, Lars Kleinschmidt introduces you to the basics of skinning Opera, that is, customizing the look and feel of the UI.
We will publish more in depth articles later on, but this article is meant as a quick start tutorial on completing simple tasks such as customizing button icons. Here Lars covers where the skin files are located, how to package the files that make up an Opera skin, and how to make simple replacements of button and background images.
It's a great read and we recommend everyone to check it out, and who knows, you might need it for something...
Last night, when the whole My Opera team was enjoying a nice dinner, the hardware gods decided to pull a joke on us.
Some crucial parts of our hardware (hey, if it was easy they wouldn't call it hardware) failed and made My Opera unavailable between 02:00 and 09:00 AM CEST.
Please accept our apologies. We are working on avoiding this happening in the future.
For this release, most of the work is done on our back—end code (by our talented developers). We're currently prepping My Opera for "the future" — to better handle queries and file storage (among other things). More details on this soon.
In addition we've also done some design- and usability changes to the files section, which was badly needed. To check it out head over to your account ("My page" -> "Account") and click on "Files".
New file upload policy
Over time we've recorded abuse on some of our services, and therefore we've been forced to update our file upload policy. This should not affect those of you who use My Opera legitimately.
In particular we now operate under a zero-tolerance regarding "Hot-Linking" of files (linking a file that is located on My Opera, but on another website) is strictly forbidden.
For security reasons, some potentially harmful file types (such as "*.exe", "*.bat" etc), as well as video files, are no longer allowed to upload on My Opera. We've received reports of spammers, scammers, etc. who has abused My Opera to spread harmful files such as these.
Short, but still a changelog:
Our files system has gone through a major revamp.
If you edit a blog post (that was created by someone else) the preview used to show you as the author instead of the original author. This has now been fixed.
Amount of forum posts is now displayed correctly (especially useful for active users like Tamil. ).
