We've seen many crazy cats on My Opera and we thought it would be cool to host a contest to see who can come up with the best lolcat. :smile:

When the contest ends we'll assemble all entries in a photo album for everyone's viewing pleasure.

Never heard of a lolcat?

Lolcats are image macros combining photographs of a cat with a humorous and idiosyncratic caption. The name "lolcat" is a compound word formed from lol and cat. [...] Lolcats are created for photo sharing imageboards and other internet forums.

We strongly recommend everyone to read the Wikipedia article for more information about the lolcat phenomenon, or just post questions as a comment in this blog post and we'll answer.

Rules, information, and prizes:

  • The competition is open to anyone who's a registered member of the My Opera community.
  • There is no age limit required to participate.
  • You warrant and represent that you own rights to all contribution submitted by you. If the submitted artwork contains elements that violate, misappropriate or infringe any copyright, trademark or other proprietary right of any other person or entity your submission will be withdrawn.
  • Snap a photo (or use an exisiting one) of your cat and add a lolcat caption to it.
  • If you don't have image editing software you can use the lolcat generator courtesy of The Cheezburger Factory.
  • Send us a link of your lolcat!
  • Winners will be announced on the frontpage of My Opera on Friday the 10th of August.
  • First prize: Food bowl with the Opera logo engraved.
  • Second prize: T-shirt from NoiseBot.
  • Third prize: Opera merchandise.

You guys got some great stuff up here. Us phone users can't use the generator you put up though. I'll keep my eyes open for one we can use and post the link here. Until then, I created a basic one with my phone's image editor.

I'm curious, for those poor souls, like myself, who lack a cat to LOL-ify, can we use some of the ones submited on the ICHCF? Since it seems like anyone who submits their cat to it gives up copyrights on it ~shrug~

Anyway, I'd love to participate, but want to make sure I can officially ^^;

It's legal to post others work if it has a Creative Commons licence. The best place to search for Creative Commons licenced work is at creativecommons.org.

The rules for this contest doesn't state that Creative Commons licenced images can't be used in this contest. Because you actually get the right to copy the work and make a derived work (ex. a lolcat) under the terms stated by the creative commons licence.

You can also ask the creator of the work to license it specifically for your use. This is an example of that.

Oh and you need to use this form to submit your image.

We will announce the winner on Friday the 10th of August at 2:00 PM CEST, so all entries have to be submitted by 10:00 AM CEST on Friday.
