mobile browser report snapshot

Read the full "State of the Mobile Web" report.

Traffic to social networks comprise almost 40% of the mobile Web according to our "State of the Mobile Web" report, published today. The results both show healthy growth in the numbers of consumers accessing the Web from their mobile devices and provide insight into aggregate consumer preferences when browsing from their phones.

Social networking consumes almost 41% of traffic: The United States, South Africa and Indonesia have more than 60% of their traffic going to social networks. More than 11.9 million people used Opera Mini in March to browse 2.4 billion pages. Thus far, more than 44 million cumulative users have tried Opera Mini. Those 11.9 million people generate more than 33 million MB of data traffic for operators worldwide. One Web will triumph over WAP content: Full Web surfing comprises more than 77% of all traffic. WAP content still generates the remaining 23% of traffic. WAP percentages have declined somewhat as more consumers realize Opera Mini can access rich Web content.

As the world's most popular Web browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini provides an elegant, fast and rich Web browsing experience. While some Web browsers work on only 20 to 30 phone models, Opera Mini runs on more than 700 different handsets, making it the available to the widest range of consumers worldwide. Almost every phone with Java can run Opera Mini.

Data in the report is based on aggregate and anonymous statistics from Opera Mini servers. All percentages are based on a snapshot of the Top 100 sites for each region.

33 terabytes of data a month...more than 1 terabyte a day going through the Opera Mini servers.

Anyone know if that's only incoming bandwidth, or total bandwidth (incoming + transcoded)? Either way it's got to cost a fortune. No wonder Opera is so keen on transcoding and compressing!

I'd like to see Opera also keep statistics about compression, like how much the total traffic has been compressed as compared to how much would normally have transferred to the browser through a desktop browser. Now that would most likely be a very interesting number.

By kyleabaker, # 21. May 2008, 01:08:17

avatar
yea Id really like to know the overall data compression ratio, thus how much money Opera Mini have saved the users

Thanks, I liked this press release and the Mobile Web Report.
The growth is incredible:)

The number of downloads increase fast, but do the tele operators have the same download (bytes). That's what they have paid for(?). I think the growth in each persons downloads with the good experience with operamini is much larger than the miss in total downloads for the teleoperators.

And this will be good for OPERA's income.

The report is definitely a positive. I Don't want to be a party popper but i was just thinking about how many of my countrymen don't have access to even the basics, let alone something this advanced as internet on mobile. We may be the largest growing mobile phone market but slow internet speeds, lack of 3G and costly plans really hinder internet penetration. With newer and cheaper technologies and excellent free softwares like the mini internet penetration could peak, if only the rates and speed are taken care of. Right now airtel, india's largest telecom operator charges Rs10 daily for an unlimited connection. This itself is a bit costly compared to about .30 for a call and sms. Yes we do have the cheapest call rates in the world. What really dampens the whole deal is the pathetic speed provided. It even stops functioning between around 2300 and 0030 hrs for unknown reasons. The point is that the potential is huge but is not being met due to lack of policies and poor implementation.

Yeah Abhishek727 u r rite, I am using Opera mini as my mobile browser and it has never ''hung'' on my device as yet. x. In fact all my surfing/browsing is thru mobile GPRS, even on my laptop I use my mobile as a modem. There is no 3G service as yet (in India) and gprs is very slow as everybody does not have a broadband connection. Opera Mini 4 is the best mobile browser ever.
