Two kids playing telephone to download Opera 9.5

Opera 9.5

Opera Software released its latest desktop browser, Opera 9.5 on June 12, 2008. We are very excited about this product because it represents a major step forward for us as well as our users’ experience. In addition to overall speed improvements, the following truly makes it a special release:

  • Opera Link: Synchronize your bookmarks, speed dial and notes between different computer(s) and your mobile phone.
  • Quick find: Type what you are looking for in the search bar, and Opera will search through all your previously information.
  • New Skin: Scandinavian inspired design.
  • Security: The best protection against malware and phishing available.

Please visit www.opera.com to download Opera 9.5.

We want everyone to know about this release, so now we are turning to you. You carry a lot of influence and we want your help.

Tell a friend

So what's this all about? We want to see how you influence others to download and try Opera 9.5. What you should do is create an event, group, page, profile, etc., on a social networking site where you can rally a group of people and display how many members have joined. The theme needs to clearly promote and encourage the download of Opera 9.5. Amount of members of a group will be used as an indicator how successful your promotion has been.

Be as creative as you want (keep it tasteful!). Feel free to use any imagery and videos located on www.opera.com to help you promote the software.

Sweet prizes

Once you have an event created, start promoting it. Those with the most members in their groups at the end of this contest will receive one of three great prizes:

  • An XO OLPC, the famous $100 laptop, not available to the general public. A very cool computer!
  • A Nintendo Wii. Do we need to say more? Easily the most fun and most accessible video game console available. And it could be yours!
  • A mobile phone, perfect for Opera Mini.

Distribution of prizes will be determined according to number of users each winner attracted to his/her entry. So, the first place winner gets first choice of prize, second place gets second choice, etc,. Additional prizes will be awarded for unique and mentionable entries.

When the contest ends we'll visit your site and record the total number of members. We'll notify winners and publish the results on the frontpage of the My Opera Community.

Rules and guildelines

While you are pretty free to do whatever you want, here are some general rules and guidelines you need to know.

  • Contest starts Tuesday, June 17, 12:01 p.m. CET.
  • Contest ends Monday, July 7th, 12:01 p.m. CET.
  • Post a link to your entry in this forum topic for registration to the contest.
  • Any questions, comments, or concerns can be further discussed in its relevant forum topic.
  • You must be a registered member of the My Opera Community to participate.
  • The event/group must clearly promote Opera 9.5.
  • It is prohibited to publish any content which is defamatory, offensive or abusive or of an obscene or menacing nature (will result in disqualification).
  • Encourage group/event members to continue spread the word to increase your chances. Create viral videos, images, music, etc.
  • Good luck!

HellbillyDeluxe 17. June 2008, 11:03

Is this Opera's answer to Mozilla's Download Day for Firefox 3?

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:12

But... where we have to do it? In our myopera page?

Ciao, Igor

EspenAO 17. June 2008, 11:13

But... where we have to do it?

My Opera, facebook, myspace, etc. There are many social networking sites you can promote this on.

rlinema 17. June 2008, 11:15

@igor
in your network like studivz, other blogs, websites etc.

zetorres 17. June 2008, 11:16

I will send a e-mail for all my contact list in my hotmail and Gmail box! Go on Opera!

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:16

So i have to do in a social network?
And how can you verify the "number of users each winner attracted to his/her entry"?

Ciao, Igor

zetorres 17. June 2008, 11:17

EspenAo..but one thing in Opera still don't work...:frown::frown:

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:18

I have yet sent a message to my website users last sunday. :frown:

EspenAO 17. June 2008, 11:18

And how can you verify the "number of users each winner attracted to his/her entry"?

We will review them manually. If there are questions concerning its legitimacy, we'll further investigate, but we're confident that this will run smoothly.

ADuda 17. June 2008, 11:19

Opera takes a more conservative promotion. They are more serious than the Firefox team. Respect :D:up:

Boy, would I laugh if the Mozilla servers crashed today :D

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:20

Manually? But if i send a message, for example, to my 77 users i can't verify someone downloaded Opera and subscribed the community. How can you do it?!

Ciao, Igor

P.S.: Sorry if i don't understand

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:21

Mozilla server?! I'll download tomorrow. :ninja: p:

EspenAO 17. June 2008, 11:24

Manually? But if i send a message, for example, to my 77 users i can't verify someone downloaded Opera and subscribed the community. How can you do it?!

Start a group on My Opera, myspace, facebook, or whatever. Tell them to join that group if they have an account and launch your project there. This is just one of many ways how you can do it. We're looking for creative ways to help promote Opera.

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:27

Hmmm, so your count is about subscribers to the group (for example) and not about how many of them choosed Opera coming from an other browser. Right?

I'm not so fast understanding. p:

Ciao, Igor

EspenAO 17. June 2008, 11:34

Yes, the goal is to get people to either join a group, an event, etc. because they are downloading the software. The "side effect" is of course that more people might discover and choose Opera. I've created a forum topic where we can discuss this further.

igorditerni 17. June 2008, 11:37

Ok, now i have understood.
I'll never win this contest. p:

andrew3105 17. June 2008, 11:44

Can I create a group in Russian in Vkontakte.ru?

ehoppe 17. June 2008, 11:48

Sure, Andrew.

violetisha 17. June 2008, 12:35

Nice! i love promoting Opera for free... But... If you want to reward us....

dantesoft 17. June 2008, 12:40

I wish I had friends at the BBC, too

BluePhoenix4k 17. June 2008, 13:06

I wouldn't mind, but unfortunately v9.5 is the one version of Opera that I wouldn't advise a friend to install ... rather install 9.27 and wait for 10.

adrian p 17. June 2008, 13:21

lol i like the picture at the top

pgifford 17. June 2008, 13:36

I agree with that. Were did the color go??

CsendesMark 17. June 2008, 13:46

I installing the opera browser for each computer, if I istalling it

violetisha 17. June 2008, 13:58

Do you know that Opera is absolutely customizable!?!?! If you want to change it color, press Shift+F12 (or Tools>Appereance), and you will see the Color Scheme option! :D :D

And... If you still dislike the new Opera skin, you can download the "Opera 9 Classic Skin" (Tools>Appereance>Skin>Find more Skins) and you can still have the improvements that offers you Opera 9.5!

leoalassia 17. June 2008, 14:03

> I wouldn't mind, but unfortunately v9.5 is the one version of Opera

Me too! Opera 9.5 have got more bugs than 9.27!!! for example in my Windows Xp if I hide Opera while is downloading some file, after some time (half hour for example) opera crashes!!! It happend every time!!! and I can continue the list...

karaj 17. June 2008, 14:37

I do not really understand this. For example, the biggest Hungarian social network site ( http://www.iwiw.hu ) is closed to the public, one must have an account or must get an invitation to register. If I ask for an invitation, I will get one in about a month. So can you please tell me how exactly do you want to check the number of users, who have joined to my group there?

And as I saw with other groups, some people prefer to join to ANY group they find, so it is really easy to make a group of any kind with about 500 users.

I don't really like this contest, an average user has absolutely no chance to win. For example, what about countries with smaller population? How could we play in such a contest with 10 million population with a country like Germany or US? :)

RebornSoldier 17. June 2008, 14:39

I've used opera for several years now, and I've always recommended it to everyone. I've got my whole family using it.

When 9.5 was released, I downloaded it and tried it, I can't say just how disappointed I was. I spent the time after this finding somewhere to download an installation for 9.27, because there was no way I could continue using 9.5.

Now, for the first time, I'm not recommending the latest version of opera, I'm actually telling people to avoid it. I'm sure the Opera Link et al are very good introductions, but as far as the basic browser itself, 9.5 is a major step backwards from 9.27

soumitram4u 17. June 2008, 15:06

:D

coxy 17. June 2008, 15:09

I well want the $100 laptop more than the poor African kids they're meant for.

What if you combine the two? One global group and one "local" (national)? That will surely increase your chance to win. Regarding your Hungarian social networking site; I'm sure there are ways for you to prove how successful your Opera promotion has been, if you're thinking of participating (screenshots, etc.).

We really want to celebrate and continue spread the word about Opera 9.5... Nothing more. It does not have to complicated. E.g.: Create a group each on facebook and myspace and invite all your friends to it. Have some kind of insentive if you reach x amount of members, etc.

Tamil could've for example hosted an Opera download contest where he would publish a real life picture of himself if his My Opera group reached 10,000 members... :eyes:

chrisnguyen 17. June 2008, 16:24

Still, I'd love to promote for Opera 9.5 even without any rewards.
Btw, I don't find any problem with Opera 9.5. I'm using this version and loving it.

ehoppe 17. June 2008, 16:29

I think average users have a great chance to win. Everyone has to create a new group/event, so everyone starts from the same level. Your success depends on how much you spread the word to friends, communities, forums, etc that you participate in. I would imagine your reach is probably quite similar regardless of where you are from. For instance, I am from Canada, a country with 33 million people. I have many friends from Norway, a country of 5 million people, who have a similar number of friends as me on Facebook.

seifip 17. June 2008, 17:04

Boy, would I laugh if the Mozilla servers crashed today :D

It just crashed

Ace Jon 17. June 2008, 17:05

I will promote 9.5 as soon as it displays pages as it's loading them.

karaj 17. June 2008, 17:06

Let's try and promote Opera.

I'm doing that since 2003  My first blog post was about Opera 7.21

Mithos 17. June 2008, 18:43

yeah... the java-plugin dont works right >.<

Ace Jon 17. June 2008, 19:22

"So I can gloat over my friends who use Firefox" - if the Mozilla servers crash (as they have been doing), it means they're doing really, really well.

khadwar_neang_666 17. June 2008, 20:24
