How to use Opera Unite

Last night I went to a party. Since Opera Unite was running at home I could easily stream my music from it. Awesome.
I shared my photos with Unite without having to upload all of them to the Web. File sharing is probably the main Unite app for me.

ericwarnke 16. June 2009, 08:23

Feels like you're presenting a solution without a problem. What are you trying to accomplish other than "uniting" people? lol.

eestlane 16. June 2009, 08:27

How long has Opera developed it already? Seems a LOT of work. Getting the service to run in all the OSes etc.

btw, don't open the same chat in two tabs as you cannot see your own content in both of them.

sgunhouse 16. June 2009, 08:35

Do you have an online photo album? Why host your photos on Flickr when you can host them on your own machine?

Okay, probably not useful if you have dialup or a mobile system - the computer and its network connection have to be on. But if you do have always-on broadband, why use Flickr's computer?

EzeAris 16. June 2009, 08:39

WOW, now i have 2 servers running :D. This is great! Now, if i wanna show to someone my photos, i just have to download Opera in his PC :D

Unite can be accessed from any device — it's just the server part that requires Opera.

How do I change my username? MyOpera FAQ tells me they don't do it anymore, but is there still a way?

eXtremo 16. June 2009, 09:11

zyph: opera link logging in panel showed me a button to change my nickname because it contained illegal character (_), dunno what about correct nicks. P:

it is located here:
http://my.opera.com/community/rename-user/
but it now says my nickname is correct and I can't change it, so you propably won't be able to do that.

EksiSozluk 16. June 2009, 09:15

claudeb 16. June 2009, 09:21

The concept of P2P social networking, where every participant keeps their own data on their own machines, is particularly appealing. I've been dreaming of something like this for a long time. Unfortunately, Opera Unite falls short of furfilling that dream. You still have to get through Opera's proxy, with an Opera browser, and make an Opera account. Where's the promised freedom? If my friends have to make Opera accounts anyway, I'll just invite them over to My Opera. It's a lot less complicated, and they can keep using their favorite browsers.

mafhperlim 16. June 2009, 09:26

Google Wave?!

Your friends can visit your content, streamed from your machine, with any browser they like without being My Opera members.

Opera will try to open a port directly to your computer (with UPnP) and services are able to use this port for direct download of content, completely bypassing the proxy when possible. We will give more examples of this in the days to come, stay tuned!
