Language file FAQ

What is an Opera language file?
A language file can be used to change the language of your Opera browser. It's a plain text file that can be edited in any text editor.
Where can I download language files?
The official Opera language files are available for download at our company Web site. Alternative language files made by Opera users are available at the My Opera language section.
How do I install language files?
  1. Choose the language file you prefer from the My Opera language section
  2. Save the file to the Opera directory on your hard drive, which by default usually is found in: C:\Program Files\Opera. ("Save" is found under the Opera "File" menu at the top of your screen.)
  3. Go to "Tools" in Opera and select "Preferences", then press the "Details..." buttons at the bottom in the Preferences box. if you can't find your language, press the choose button to find your language.
  4. Press OK to apply your selection, and restart Opera when prompted.
How can I create an Opera language file?
Please use an editor that can save in the same text format and does not alter codes or use line breaks.
What are the most important guidelines for translating a language file?
  1. Only translate text between ".......", avoid comments (; String table) and codes.
  2. Do not translate anything to the left of the equal signs (=), nor the section headers (the lines with a single word inside a bracket). Ex. [Translation]
  3. Do not remove \r\n etc. as these denote linebreaks.
  4. Please note that %s is a variable.
  5. Do not insert line breaks (do not use the return key)
How do I know how long/how many characters the translated string can be?
As a general rule, you should try not to make your translated string longer than the English original. If they become longer, please check how your translated string look in Opera. If it's too long, you must shorten the string.
How do I test my finished language file?
The language file should be tested by using it with Opera before you submit it as an alternative file.
How do I submit my file?
To be able to submit your alternative language file you need to sign up for a My Opera account. Once you have signed up you need to login with your user name and password and click the 'Submit language file' from the Opera languages page.
What is an unofficial Opera language translation?
An unofficial language file has not been controlled for quality by Opera. Please find official Opera translations at our company Web site. Opera Software takes no responsibility for the quality of the alternative language files.
