you are affected by the qt4.5.3 bug see my comments earlier in this thread or use the latest snapshot of opera to work around the qt bug…

It's because of memory leaks, I believe, it can take a while before all memory has been freed again…

@borda, you also have a different problem than the opening poster, you have a problem with qt4.5.3 which misses some patch, grab the latest opera snapsho to workaround the problem or get debian to fix ...…

I have guess I have had opera use up to 4GB's too, though I didn't check my system was to slow and I simply killed opera (took a long time to kill though...) but the problem really depends on the site ...…

Look at the data, it is not virtual memory only it is reserved too which is absurdly high. We are swapping because of opera and repeatedly have to kill it to be able to use the computer normally…
