Tighter integration of VLC plugin

VLC is a free cross-platform media player. I find it is very light on resources. While the Mozilla plugin works with Opera, it very limited.
I figure that because it is Open source, It might be very easy for Opera devs to work with the Videolan team on developing the plugin.
What I want is for VLC to be able to be my primary media plugin, and it will take over when a page calls for Windows Media Player, or quicktime.

How did you get ythe VLC plugin to work? I have copied it to the plugin directory, but it's not listed as a plugin by Opera...

VLC has a specific browser plugin:

When you install VLC choose the option for the Mozilla Plugin.

Close Opera, then Open the VLC folder C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\mozilla and copy the .dll to the Opera plugins folder.

Open Opera, then go to tools > preferences > advanced, and search for the file lypes you want associated with it (for example asf) click edit.

At the bottom choose VLC for that filetype.

VLC is a great software. it can play nearly every format out there, even broken files!
the plugin just needs the basic controls (or a way to send shortcuts to the embedded display, wich would be a nice workaround to the problem...)

Mp3s sound a million times better when playing with Winamp and winamp is less buggy, but VLC is still really cool.

A couple of points about working on VLC

It wouldn't be the first time Opera has integrated Open Source Software . They have already integrated Aspell very nicely.

Like Opera, VLC is available on a wide array of platforms (including some mobile platforms such as WinCE / PocketPC)

If Opera sets VLC to work as the default plugin for all the media types it supports, this can end some of the issues users have with getting specific plugins to work.

If Opera works out a deal to become one VideLan's partners they may be able to generate more traffic to opera.com. Especially if they can convince the VideoLan team to give them some prominent recognition cool Just mentioning an Opera plugin in a changelog and the option during instillation will probably create a significant amount of traffic. Since February 2005 they have had about 20 million downloads.
Can we finaly get some response from an Opera employee whether or not this is a remote possibilty?

It would be very useful for Linux Opera users, because VLC is able to read many audio and video files, and lot of web sites uses "integrated" media player that does not exist for Linux, but could be replaced by VLC Plugin.

I hate having to use Quicktime, Windows Media Player and Real Player. I realy wish one player could be used to play any file format.

And one player shall rule them all.............my presshhious devil

Unfortunately, not all Real Media formats are supported, at least until someone writes a GPL library to play them.
Full list of supported formats here.

Love this idea, VLC is my goto option for big files and broken files that Divx or WMP won't play.

+infinity seriously as long as vlc fixes its overall problem of not working properly on Linux [64bit] it could really go a long way to becoming a universal plugin for Opera or any other browser for that matter.

Sounds promising. Now if only the plugin would provide us with an interface.

sounds great. if we can use vlc plug-in for all media types, it saves a lot of programs from installing.

Right now, the mozilla plug-in does not work. say for mp3, opera does not detect this vlc plug-in for mozilla.

Opera ignores the plugin. It hsa to, or it will crash.

If you want to *test* it with Opera, *at your own risk* , edit plugin-ignore.ini.

Once the plugin is stable and properly supports Opera, I'm sure it'll be updated to allow it.

Well.... DEFINITELY. You can play ANY existing video and audio format without the need to install anything else (see codecs) in your system. Is also less resource eater. And run in a lot of platforms (OSX, Linux, windos, etc.). Giveit a try. You wont regret wink

I wonder if the Opera devs respond as quickly or at all at the suggestions made by users? I'm new here so I don't know. Mozilla is quite actively involved with people in improving the browser - they have a suggestion box at their homepage! wink

I use vlc 0.8.5. I usually listen to soe songs and bbc news etc in real player file format. May be I haven't tried the file format you are asking.

Now, if you could link me a file (of real media format) that you could not play with vlc, perhaps I could try if it plays. just to verify.

The answer is yes, they generally read the forums, and yes they care about the users. There are however no guarantees as this is primarily user forum. The reason I started this thread was to show them how many ppl were interested in this feature. The more people respond here, the more likely we we are to get some results.

You should also post in the VLC forums. I have posted there (same name - chaimav) a couple of times about this, but the threads never took off. sad

Does VLC run on WIN 98? I tried to install it on a 9X box but had a DLL error.

I may give it a try on my XP laptop.

While VLC is a fine media player neither is it the lightest on resources nor is it IMO the best.
Non Windows users probably heared already about MPlayer and MEncoder.
I would say that MPlayer is the ultimative player in the Linux world.
Well, probably just a few of you know that MPlayer was ported to Windows too.

Since MPlayer is my default player guess what I would like a plugin for?

My point is that if Opera would provide an usable application program interface most of this silly I whish this, you whish that and he whishes something else would stop.
Besides it will have more positive impact on Opera's popularity than threads like: OMG why is Opera ignored?

I think for Opera not to need any plugins it'll have to be like VLC on the backend ie becoming a very powerfull almighty media player in the process, might as well add Winamp skin support and go all the way.

Can we just have it so that is uses the installed codecs (directshow , ffdshow) ? I personally user CCCP to play all my video files in my default player of choice.

I like VLC, I really do. But at the same time I really hate having more than 1 player installed on my computer. (The Zune Player is a different story though - just wish the stupid thing will adhere to my ffdshow preferences)

vlc should use the NPAPI like any other plugin does.
Regarding html5-video: On linux it's no problem anyhow with gstreamer bad/ugly packages to support about every codec I ever encountered. On windows it would be neat if the gstreamer port that opera uses could get some sort of bridge-plugin for the direct-show (or WPA or whatever that is called nowadays) filter. Would not require the installation of a third-party program and all the codecs available in your fav. media player would also be available in your browser.
Also it can't be too hard to write a little script that checks video.isCodecSupported() (not sure if this is the correct name, but I know there is such a thing) and if the codec is not supported replaces the <video> element by an <object> to embed a video player as a normal plugin.
