If it isn't broke why fix it? It is a smart move to maintain a Windows system using Ccleaner because a windows system needs the maintenance. One of the reasons that I use Linux is because I do not have to waste 20% of my time maintaining it.

yes well I use bleachbit about twice a week.

A: it usually frees up about 60-100mb.
B: it flushes my caches and cookies, which in turn speeds up my internet use.
C: Privacy, Privacy, Privacy...
I don't necessarily want all my web-surfing history and all my personal documents available to anyone that sits in front of my computer.

Also if you read the information on the site listed you will see that their are other benefits.

It is a good free tool and that's all there is to it.

excerpt from site:
Beyond simply deleting files, BleachBit includes advanced features such as shredding files to prevent recovery, wiping free disk space to hide traces of files deleted by other applications, and vacuuming browsers to make them faster. Better than free, BleachBit is open source.
Download now
Stay tuned: exciting new features are coming!

One last thing, My system runs faster after I have run bleachbit after a few days of heavy use.

Havn't used bleachbit for a couple of weeks.
I have done a lot of system updates and deb backups.
Also updated kernel and other things and did not want to take any risks whatsoever untill I had finished and cloned my system.

Just ran bleachbit in normal and root modes.
It cleaned up, deleted and defragged as well as shredding all free space.
All up it removed over 2 gig of stuff.
Afterwards my system and web-browsing is like ten times faster......

No probs, I love it...

Looks interesting. I'm sure I have a lot of orphan files hiding on my computer.

I have another question though. Where's you get that dock thing on the left? Hrmmmm, not sure I could get a wallpaper like that; I'd never get any work done left

Including Ubuntu's.

I had a slight issue with it, though. I found the icon in the LXDE menu and running it as normal user, it didn't clean anything because it lacked the permissions. There was also an icon for Bleachbitasroot, which crashed (maybe because Ubuntu technically doesn't have root lol ) . In case anybody else has this issue, it was trivial to overcome by running it from the command line: sudo bleachbit.

Yes, Linux doesn't need to be maintained to the windows does, however this whole operation took like 30 seconds. That includes the minor issues I noted above. Running anti-spyware on Windows took at least 30 minutes.

I am using ubuntu 11.04 and LXDE as they are the integral parts of my distro.
I use bleachbit in normal and root modes. (they are two seperate options)

I have never in 6 months had a crash or any other problem.

as stated I switch every single option on. I have yet to have any issues afterwards.

That of course does not mean that the same will hold true for everyone.

As with any application that rapes your operating system and removes many things that quite often don't get removed.

use with caution until you assertion your own trust levels...

note: no special permissions are required, especially with ubuntu 11.04 and derivatives.

I'm also using Ubuntu with LXDE, strange. The app works great other than that, and I just offered the solution in case anyone else has a permissions issue.

kewl,
In non root mode it will show errors because as you said it does not have permission to do certain things.
This however is not a real error or fault/failure of the software.
It does I suppose sorta look that way when you see all those lines of text flying past.

Thanks for your input Sanguinemoon.

Opera and Chromium browsers were playing up a bit lately.
I deleted all cookies, caches, etc. (delete all private data in Opera)
rebooted, still having problems, started getting a tad bit frustrated.

Brainwave (well another option to make the bloody things work correctly)

> sudo bleachbit
> all options ticked
> reboot

Success !

Not sure what it was, but bleachbit fixed it.

gotta love it (also removed 382mb)

I need to do this to the kids' computers. They're forever downloading "free" Windows games and I was swear an Athlon XP (1.8 ghz, single core) that I had until 3 years ago was faster than those machines. I'll be willing to bet that gigs of information will be cleaned p

Hey, Duncan, thanks for posting about Bleachbit. I installed it on my Fedora 16 system last night and gave it a try. Seems to have worked pretty good. It apparently cleared up a good 200MB of disk space for me.
I still adore my C64

I religiously use CCleaner on my PC to ensure that the computer runs smoothly especially when using web browsers. I will have to look into the Linux version BleachBit since I do all my work (I'm a circuit designer) on a Linux box. Thanks for the share.
