VERY slow on Facebook
Hi, I'm using Opera since YEARS, it's still my preferred and loved browser. However, recently it seems that it has some issues in rendering some pages. It gets "stuck" and crawls when Facebook is opened, especially when lots of content is loaded, to the point that even clicking on the "close tab" X takes 3-4 seconds to actually being "recognized".Please take a look at this video, see how dragging down the scrollbar is followed by a slow rendering of the page. Around sec 30 I went up to the top and then kept pressed the down button: check how slowly and "on-off" is the scroll.

This is happening on FB and also on a bunch of other sites, and I think are the ones that have lots of JS.
Google Maps is also very very slow in rendering pages, esp when you load a path and modify it.
I ran the v8 benchmark suite (http://v8.googlecode.com/svn/data/benchmarks/v6/run.html) and Opera scored 3572 while Chrome 8621. (!!!)
In general it looks not "snappy" as it was. With some heavy pages it "hangups" and I have to wait several seconds until I have back control.
Anyone is having this issue? This is really driving me mad since sometimes it is really unusable (I'm so attached to Opera that I can't let it go, but if I was a new user I would be annoyed)
I'm running Opera 11.50 on Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Latitude E4310
When you sign in to Facebook with Opera right click the page first, select Edit Site Preferences,Under Network select, Mask as Firefox.
Also on a game or photo, right click and select the "Flash" settings panel for website storage and allow it unlimited storage for your game listing in the panel for FB (facebook), also check that Hardware Acceleration is unchecked for Flash.
It should respond faster.

I do hope the development team could note and fix the performance problem. I am a fan of Opera since 7, at that time, it outperformed any other competitor. I wish this is still valid today.
By the way, opera is still the most reliable and my first choice browser.
Merry Christmas

Opera is faster in Facebook than Chromium.
One thing I have noticed is that caches, thumbnails, cookies and the like can affect performance and speed.
If your caches are not cleared regularly then you may be using a swapfile instead of ram and then you will see a huge decrease in speed.
Also > Hardware acceleration settings and the size/quality of your video card/chip and video ram can affect your response and speed a lot.
This open source (free) utility to clean out your system may make a difference.

Though..
Though on my system Opera is the ONLY browser that has problem with facebook. Nor Chrome, nor Firefox.
I use Opera from a long time, heck! I used to pay to use Opera, so imagine how long do I use it, but now, I am finding myself switching to Chrome and FF more and more.
Is it possible that the dev team doesn't recognize this issue? Is it possible that Opera is the only browser that doesn't check how facebook will appear?
I don't know, is there some trick, some extension, some config to tweak to let me use Opera? If not, I'll get to use Chrome more and more and I can predict that in the ene I'll just ditch Opera at all.
Please, can somebody in the dev team take care of this? fyi I find Opera very slow in XP and in my Mac.
This is still just my best theory though.

I have same problem, I run Dev builds and my wife Stable builds, we both have some UserJS and extenstions including F.B.Purity so we don't see their ads and stupid apps from our contacts.
But it happens very often that when FB tab is open the CPU is working around 10% (quad core, 8 threads). It happens even if I turn of UserJS and extensions. Also Gmail can be pretty slow, I suppose it is the heave use of JavaScript there.
Google+ is not usable also

Many people are not reporting problems. A tiny handful are. Most people don't seem to be having any problems at all.
Also, what do you know about what Opera is or isn't doing? Do you know everything that goes on at Opera HQ?
`Google+ is not usable also '
This is incorrect, google plus works fine
and now includes `real time notifications' and the red notification alert icon.

The few consistent comments re/ facebook is slow, etc
don't pan out and it seems most users have no issues using facebook.

May be "just a few" but we have a post with more than "a few" and the problem seems exactly the same for everyone. So clearly there's something wrong. Why Opera is not doing anything? Where should I report this?

I have been following complaints re/ Facebook & Google Plus for a few months now.
There havn't been many and nearly all issues have been resolved.
It is only in the last week that google + `notification icon' and `real-time notifications' have been available in Opera.
(a few weeks for chrome).
Given that things are working and have changed and sorted out.
How can you realistically state that `Why Opera is not doing anything? '

There have been major changes to Facebook (ie/ timeline) and Google Plus code over the last month or so.
I do not `mask' or have any special settings and have no problems using these two social media sites on a daily basis.

I'm not expecting that Opera browse the entire forum looking for bugs hiddens in people's post, but this one is constantly up and have >2000 reads.
This is not a configuration issue or a PC issue. I have seen it on 3 different machines for some time now. Two are Windows XP, one is Windows 7. I have been using Opera since version 6. I know what I'm doing and this is a very real problem.

I was constantly using and receiving notifications in Facebook and Google Plus.
as well as posting status's and photos and managing my business pages.
No problems whatsoever, lightning fast, 18 active, open tabs.
What more can I say.
Maybe one variable - I use bleachbit every two days to clean out my whole system including, thumbnails, temporary files, cache, cookies, etc, etc.

Also certain settings both in Opera and in general system may affect other things.
Then you start getting into ram / video ram / buggy peripherals / anti virus software / firewalls / dns servers / proxies and the list starts getting longer.

Extensions is a good direction.
All the others are not right directions: if Opera is having issues with FB (and only FB, G+ for example works fine) it's clearly a buggy code or an inefficency somewhere there, not in the firewall or antivirus or dns (!).
I still think it's a JS issue. On the js test
http://v8.googlecode.com/svn/data/benchmarks/v6/run.html
I have roughly 3700 with Opera, and far better with Firefox (~5000) and Chrome (~8000). Even IE9 managed to outperform Opera (which is weird).

Yep, same here but it just started today. So slow to post a comment in Facebook that it isn't worth it. I used Microsoft IE for an hour or so and it worked fine. I restarted computer and Opera and it still is not working right.
I hope someone comes up with something.
Probably big brother testing a way to pre monitor what we put on the Internet. (SOPA)
Last night was it; I had to use FF to post to my FB page. Which is too bad as Opera has been of late, before the 11.60 upgrade, my favorite browser. As someone had pointed put, i also believe it's JavaScript issue, since every other JS heavy site also is very very slow, like http://www.theverge.com/ for example.
In which case, there is nothing to do but wait for the next version and hope they improve that (and HTML5 also).

I found a little work around. I type in notepad and then cut and paste it into FB.
This happens both on my Windows XP netbook and my Win7 desktop computer, by the way. Everything else works just fine.
I have 2 things to input, one DuncanWilliams, your point is void as you use a Mac OS (As shown by your screenshots).
2. I run a Windows 7 64-bit, Core 2 Quad at 2.GHz, everything runs good (I monitor my performance) and I'm currently only running 6 tabs In Opera (plus Spotify, Outlook, Skype and security), my CPU usage is averaging 2%, 1.4GB RAM in use (571,908MB is Opera) and Facebook is deathly slow at this current time. Running Firefox in College I had no issues, running Opera at home however, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to use Facebook. Text is entered at a shocking rate, I spend more time waiting for what I have typed into Facebook to appear, than what I do typing it. Out of Facebook (In this box) I have no issues, and text is entered at the rate I type it.
The major Facebook slowdowns have been since they implemented their 'Contacts Pane' to the right, as well as the ticker, and then when the 'Timlines' were introduced.
I understand that this is not sorely an issue with Opera (Although Facebook is stable in other browsers), however it is obvious that Facebook is using more and more RAM, which is severely affecting Opera's performance. I also notice these major performance decreases when I expand my tabs into windows. It appears that as soon as Opera uses 300MB of RAM, the performance starts to decrease at a substantial rate. Closing the program and opening up again helps (A bit) but soon returns. Even clearing the 'Closed Tabs' list does not solve any problems. I'm out of ideas, however if Opera does continue to be this laggy in Facebook, I will consider switching to another browser.
In the meantime, keep up the good work, Opera is, in my opinion, the best browser, these major issues plague it at this time however. Please fix it!
Toby
