Failed to connect > Verification of server certificate failed > check DATE setting????

Hello there.

My puzzle:

I keep getting this error msg:

Failed to connect to the internet.
Verification of server certificate failed.
Please check the date setting in your device.

Phone: Motorola EX124G
Provider: Tracfone (using AT&T)
OS: Java
Opera mini version: 6.1 & 4.3

The phone comes with its own browser which is slow, I installed Bolt and it worked fine. I first installed Operas 6.1, installation went fine, I only poked around a minute or so then moved on to other things.

Went back later, saw the screen with the icons (facebook, weather, etc) however was not able to use any of them, I kept getting a error msg.

I uninstalled 6.1 and instead put in 4.3. Now the error msg came up as soon as the phone connected to the internet; no screen with the icons.
I uninstalled 4.3 and went back to 6.1; same thing, no icons just the error message.

Bolt and the original browser still work fine.

This phone just recently became available on Tracfone, and have only had it a few days now. I tried installing Opera because other users of the phone had had success with it (6.1 & 4.3); so I know it will work.

Unfortunately Motorola's documentation for the phone is severely lacking; in many cases I cant find it even listed on their site.

For instance I went to the Opera settings page, chose Motorola, was taken to their site, and the phone isnt listed there either.

The phone appears to be a clone of the EX128, only without the second SIM card. I could not find the 128 on the Motorola site either.

FWIW, this is a tutorial of the phone to give you an idea about it. Straight Talk is a division of Tracfone.

I am new to accessing the net with a phone, so if you have any questions or suggestions, please type slowly so I can understand you:D

Check your date setting, I mean really look at it. Month, day, year. Make sure they're correct.

Something could have gotten garbled in the phones software, or firmware. As a last resort, do a hard reset - this returns everything to factory specs, the way you took it out of the box. Download Opera Mini first, then BOLT. If that doesn't work, one of the needed certs may have actually expired, in which case you need to have it updated.

To the degree that I am able to I did check these settings; oddly the phone does not appear to have a menu for changing them.

When I first got the phone a week ago I noted that the time was a few hours off. Upon activation though it reset itself to the correct hour, day, and day of the week. I do not see the year listed, however if that was incorrect I would expect the day of the week to be wrong too; August 28th is a Sunday this year, but it was not last year, nor is it likely to be next year......

Like you said, that is a last resort; I just got the phone and if I have to go through all the nonsense of setting up my contacts, apps, etc again I will not be a happy camper.cry

I installed, deleted, and re-installed both 4.3 & 6.1; even going so far as to download the files again, in case the originals had been corrupted during the download. With each version, even though they were taken directly from the Opera site, I did run the update option, for both, in case there was an update to be had. I would hope that the certs would be correct for the files they are offering.bigeyes

The original browser is slow, but it works. I am not a huge fan of Bolt either, but it does work too. For the short time I played with it Opera had some promise, and I would like to get it working, but if I cant get it to go it wont alter my life dramaticly.

Thank you again for your time and effort.

Yes i also once had this problem and the reason was my phones time zone and month was set wrong. TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM SET THE CORRECT TIME ZONE,DATE,MONTH,YEAR AND TIME,then delete your previous opera mini and RESTART YOUR PHONE AND GET A FRESH NEW OPERA MINI FROM m.opera.com and I'M SURE YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED.TRY IT.

Thank you for your efforts indranilnandi & Sagrid. However, as I noted above, re-setting the date/time, which I have been able to do with the other Motorola phones I have had in my 10+ years of Tracfone does not appear to be an option with this model phone; time and date set automatically when the phone is activated and there does not appear to me any means of altering those settings.

As a follow up, and closing, to my original post I will point out that removing the battery seems to have done the trick.

During a session of trying to get OM working, which included repeated deleting and reinstalling the program, I inadvertently removed the battery while manipulating the phone while the back cover was off. A short time later I opened OM again to try my luck and it has since worked without an issue.

If someone meeting the same frustrations as I had stumbles across this thread at some future time I hope that this works for them as well.

Have a Magical Day.
