Opera 9.0 Preview 1 is now available for download

We are still at an early stage in the development of Opera 9 (code-name Merlin), however, we are very excited about the next version of Opera and are releasing this Preview to the Community to give you a taste of the new technologies and improved standards support we have been working on lately. Some of the new features include:

- support for XSLT, Canvas 2D, and Web Forms 2.0
- rich-text editing on Web pages
- site-specific preferences
- a new IMAP back-end
- access to Opera's preferences via opera:config

Also in this release are new default shortcuts. We continue to make progress on our BitTorrent support and it will be included in a public release as soon as possible. For complete changelogs and download links see:

- Windows
- Unix
- Mac

We invite users to discuss the Preview in the Forums and Newsgroups. We are particularly interested in feedback about:

- speed and stability
- IDing as Opera by default
- rendering regressions since Opera 8.5
- problems connecting to secure sites using TLS 1.1
The Opera Ninja recommends a forum search to find answers to your questions ninja

GIFs seem to be animating quicker for me. (sgunhouse's flag is on crack) (EDIT: Odd, I'm no longer seeing this. But, when I activate auto-scroll with my mousewheel and scroll, animation stops..)

Also, can we remove the star from the address field? It is kind of pointless, to me..

Why? It's wery useful for newbies and mouse dependend users (mac users? just joke wink ).

Yes, really great...

Sorry, it DOES work.

But Opera crashes, if you push the “remove”-button at the first demo on this page.

Open jsconsole.html and then watch the JavaScript (Message) Console. The number of messages will steadily grow. Does this mean that we can't have the JS Console as a panel anymore?

Awesome... the switch of the "New Tab" and "New Window" shortcut keys alone is worth the try. Countless times I hit Ctrl+T to open a new tab, only to open the "Add Bookmark" window and have to hit Esc and Ctrl+N. Now, only thing left that I'm used to in other browsers is hitting Ctrl+Enter on the address bar to automatically insert a www. and .com. I've been using that shortcut since... hell, I don't know when, several IE versions ago. Thankfully, Firefox adopted these shortcuts, and hopefully Opera eventually does too.

I was just playing around with the new tab features, and I was just thinking... it would be cool if double-clicking a tab would create a duplicate of that tab. Currently, middle-clicking a tab closes it, and double-clicking does nothing. Seems like a logical fit to me... anyone agree?

First impression: Wicked nice! bigsmile

Syntax highlighting for the source viewer is needed though. It's unusable without it.

Edit to add: I'm not fond of the keyboard shortcut changes, though I understand why they were made... I'll be keeping my old shortcuts, Ctrl+D for paste and go is hardwired in my left hand.

Hmmm... I never actually dug that far into Opera, to bother editing shortcuts. I probably knew about the ability at one point, but didn't feel like screwing with configurations at the time (if there's one computer-related task I absolutely hate, it's configuring the buttons on a gamepad or the keys on a keyboard). The way I see it, what works, works. Something like a web browser shouldn't *need* to be heavily configured to run as expected. Which is why I often went back to Firefox, Mozilla, etc. Since around 7.0 or 7.5, Opera has steadily been getting better... it's working more as I would expect, getting less cluttered overall, and continuing to innovate. All while getting even faster.

But, what the hell, I'll go mess around in those options and see if I can add Ctrl+Enter for the hell of it.

Well, there's really no need for that. Opera prepends "www." and appends ".com" automagically.

If you're not in a local network, you can go to Ctrl+F12 > Advanced > Network > Server name completion and uncheck the first option.

Double click on note opens message edit tab.

There is no "application/x-opera-configuration" content-type handling, and http://my.opera.com/community/customize/setups/ is not working at all.

I tried to show opera:config in panel, but SSR-mode is unusable on this page.

Specify "com, org, net" in the server name completion dialogue.

If you need .org or .net for specific addresses and the prioritised list in the settings isn't enough, you can of course add a shortcut key for it; http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=1029190 . although one might wonder whether a simple bookmark nickname would be much more efficient in such speicifc situations.

Double click on note did always open a message compose tab, nothing new. Except for Notes created by copying directly from selected text on a webpage (hotclick menu or Ctrl+Shift+C), which open the associated page.

Downloadable setups from my.opera.com are indeed broken, will not work in preview 1.

Yahoo Mail requires some extra work, either from them or from us (browser.js meddling), and maybe some more code changes from us as well.

I had a line in ua.ini like:

www.nwolb.com=5

which worked fine; doesn't seem to work in O9 though unfortunately. Thanks for your help!

Seb smile

Add www.nwolb.com to the section [overrides] in opera6.ini, and add

User Agent|Spoof UserAgent ID=5

Doesn't seem to work; I don't see an [overrides] section in opera6.ini, but I did upgrade. To the end of opera6.ini I added this:

[overrides]
User Agent|Spoof UserAgent ID=5

is that correct?

Thanks for your help, Seb smile

right below the "Moderator: " should be a line "Child boards: Spam Board". The code tag doesn't seem to work correctly so I can't paste the source, but in the source this line is still there. just take a look at it yourself, it's visible for guests:

this worked 2 minutes before I upgraded, so I'm pretty sure it's that update which made this line vanish. sad

Well, if the domain exists, that's how it works. You could put 'org' before 'com', as that is probably the right order for domains you want.

Ok, I meant that I upgraded O9 over 8.5, hence (maybe) the [overrides] section did not appear.

The real problem is that the spoofing isn't working. Could you clarify that what I placed at the end of opera6.ini in the post above was correct? Or should I do something else?
