Opera and Nationwide

About a week ago, Opera (latest version) stopped working with Nationwide Building Society's website. I can no longer log in with my main laptop, using Vista (the first log-in screen keeps re-appearing), although I can still log in with my old laptop (using XP), which I keep as a back-up.

I have tried other browsers (I have the latest version of them all), and have no problem logging in using them.

I have asked Nationwide for help, but their technical department doesn't want to know, since Opera is not one of their preferred browsers.

I have tried everything I can think of: deleting all cookies, identifying Opera as IE etc, but nothing makes any difference.

Any ideas, anyone?

Hi strix37,
how far into the login process do you get? Is it something I could look at without having an account, i.e. by just submitting a made-up user name and password?

If you go back to the site, see the problem occur and later load "Tools > Advanced > Error console" you will see any errors Opera recorded while executing the JavaScript on the site (also CSS errors, but they are likely not relevant - filter them out by selecting JavaScript in bottom left box). It is possible that I can see what the problem is simply by looking at a copy of the error messages. If you click somewhere in the window, use [Ctrl+A] to select all and [Ctr+C] to copy you can paste the error texts in a reply to my message.

OK, many thanks: a reply from someone who works for Opera, the best browser in the world - what could be better!

In reply to your questions:

When I try to log in to Nationwide, I get the sign-on screen, where I enter my customer number and press "Continue".

There I find the two options: "4 simple steps to signing on with your card reader" and "or sign on with memorable data >>" - but either option just leads back to the sign-on screen (I have tried both options).

If I try made-up memorable data, I get the error message "Your details have been entered incorrectly. Please try again". - so it seems that my data are recognized by Nationwide.

Thanks also for supplying the information regarding "Tools > Advanced > Error console": This is what I found regarding my latest log-in attempt (and there are plenty recorded from previous efforts too):

Is this of any help at all in identifying the problem?

Hallvor, it has gone a week, and I have heard nothing further from you: have you gone on holiday, or just given up on this one?

Sorry to be slow at responding, this fell off my radar. Unfortunately there are no clues in the log - none of these errors seem relevant.

I'm not sure how to proceed here. The only way I could investigate further seems to be if you give me your customer number - the way I understand the login procedure, knowing just this number would not give me access to any of your accounts unless I also know some passwords/further details? Is that correct?

OK, that got me worried so I've just checked. I used to be able to log in with Site Preferences set to Accept Cookies and don't Delete when Exiting but this time it bounced me back as it did so to you.
On the home page I allowed cookies, went to the Sign In page and had to do the same again, entered my number, next page had to set Site Prefs. to allow cookies, clicked on the Memorable Data button (that has changed since last time) and the next page had Cookies enebled.
Then I had to go through some pages re. greeting name and what did I want to do then got to the Mem. Data page (I think that was the order - there were so many I lost track!) and eventually got in!

Everything has changed - even transferring between accounts is on a tab - so my monthly fight to get a statement as I want it could be interesting.

LOL. If you know JavaScript you could write a user JS or two to reorganise the website wink

Nationwide has totally and radically changed its website, completely remade it in fact, and as a consequence it is now once again possible to access Nationwide through Opera - Hoooooray - at long last! ;-)
