Received folder not deleting
I recall having some issues with the Received folder before. I believe it was double entries. But now I see that I have hundreds of mails in it that should have been deleted. I never use the Received folder, so I hadn't been tracking what's going on in it.I could wipe them all out, but that presumably would wipe out the mail I intentionally saved in other folders. So how does one proceed with this problem?
I'm in Opera 11.51/1087. I have three computers that I sync Opera across.

Set the Mail Database Consistency Check Time to 0, save the change and restart Opera. Choose OK to perform the maintenance. The number will reset to a high number after the restart, so don't worry about that.
Or, do <http://operawiki.info/ImportFromBadMailFolder>.

That could definitely happen, but maybe not. It depends on what the problem is.

IMAP with gmail,
Delete the IMAP account. Then, if you still see any messages from the Gmail account, shift + delete them to remove them from the database. Then, add the IMAP account back in.
But, for Gmail, make sure you're subscribed to all folders and dont set "hide from IMAP" at mail.google.com for any of the folders.
It wouldn't log in. I cycled opera, and completely lost my session, possibly because of the error dialog that was hiding behind the app. It still wouldn't log in. I tried again from th error dialog, same credentials at all times, and it logged in.
But the Received still is loaded with long-ago-deleted mails.

Use the "standalone installation" in the installer to install to a folder on your desktop. Setup the IMAP account in it. Everything fine there? Are you sure the messages are gone at mail.google.com too?
Did you try the Mail Database Consistency Check as suggested?
If all else fails, then you'll have to do <http://operawiki.info/ImportFromBadMailFolder> and then add the IMAP account.
But now I've done it, and it didn't help.
The messages do not show in All Mail at gmail.
Not sure what you mean by installer. Download opera again?

Do they show up in "Trash" at mail.google.com?

Yes, download the Opera installer and use the "standalone installation" option in the installer to install to a folder on your desktop.

don't see that option at all. The initial page says Your Opera ... will be upgraded. And the Options tab has no standalone option. All Users is hard-set.
You need to change the install path.

I set up a portable instance, and duplicated my gmail account. The new instance shows 229 mails in Received, which looks to be accurate, while the system-installed Opera shows 973. I suppose that points to that import business as the only solution.

I went into the Receive folder and started deleting. I played with Views, and revealed Hidden - which I don't know what it is - and deleted more. I was getting duplicates, triplicates, and sometimes many more than that.
Still, I had over 600 items in the folder. Then I got the bright idea of deleting items from my feeds. Sure enough, Received went down to minimal numbers.
There are three factors working here. First, the feeds are counted in Received. That explains most of the problem.
Second, mails are not always being deleted when they should.
Third, I am getting multiple copies of mails.

You should get an extra copy for each gmail label applied to the message. So, if the message in is the Gmail "Inbox" label, the label "test" and the label "test2", in addition to the copy from "[Gmail]/All Mail", you'll get 3 more copies.
Those extra copies are hidden in Opera's views as long as "Show hidden" is unchecked or if "show hidden" is checked and "show duplicates" is unchecked. However, after setting up a Gmail IMAP account, if you create new IMAP folders, those won't have the hidden bit set on them. This might be the case for "[Gmail]/Important". For views like those, you have to change flags= from 259 to 263 in index.ini for them. Can't be sure that's what you're seeing though. Make sure to read <http://operawiki.info/GmailIMAP> too if you haven't.

Yes. The total message count really is a total. You can show feeds in "All Messages/Received" for example too. Just check "show feeds". You can also "show newsgroups". Those work great with the account selector in "shift + F12 -> buttons -> mail". Although, "feeds" hasn't been added to the drop-down yet. You have to right-click in the mail panel and set "show messages from" to feeds to set just feeds.

With Gmail IMAP, when you press del on a message, it should get moved to "[Gmail]/Trash". Then, when you empty the trash or shift + delete in the trash, the messages should be gone for good. You can shift + del the messages outside of the trash to bypass the trash and get rid of them immediately. That should just work, as long as you're subscribed to the trash imap folder. If not, you have to drag to the IMAP trash folder and then shift + delete on it. Make sure the IMAP options in "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" at mail.google.com are set to the defaults.
There is/was an issue where Opera doesn't recognize messages deleted from another client and then undeletes them or something. Are you deleting messages from more than one client? This might be fixed in Opera 12 if it isn't already.
That duplicates business explains why I sometimes had a backlash as I was deleting. A couple of seconds later, more mail would be deleted from the list. I suspected that deleting once instance of a mail was taking down the others, but casual visual checking didn't confirm that, so I proceeded. The result, however, was that I lost a few dozen mails I wanted to keep. Frankly, I think some more secure way of dealing with this ought to be implemented. I know it's ultimately my responsibility to know how the client works, but simpler is always better, as long as the job is done. Since M2 folders are really only views, I don't see why they would each be reflected in Received. It seems inconsistent and counterintuitive, and it makes for more complication, with a greater chance of user "error" leading to lost mail.
Yes, I am subbed to Gmail/Trash. I do use multiple m2 clients as a rule, but I haven't done a bunch of that in a while. Hopefully the delete bug will be squashed soon, and I also hope they will give thought to my reasoning above.
Thanks again,
