I like a constant zoom of 120%, but this is unfriendly in latest Opera release .....
Hi allAnother (only small) problem since upgrading to the latest version of Opera... Wondered if this is possible to iron out or if there is a setting I can change somewhere to rectify it....
I like to browse most windows at 120% zoom. In Preferences > Webpages > Page Zoom - I therefore have the setting at 120%. No problems in the old build I was using. But now, when I type a search into google, the cursor goes further ahead than it should, getting worse the more I type. So if i type in a long string or words, the cursor ends up around 3 or 4 spaces ahead of where it should be.
This did not happen in the previous version I was using.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks - this forum is great and very helpful
Max
I don't understand the problem you describe, or I can't repeat it.
Which version are you using? What 'into google' function do you use: a toolbar, their webpage?
If you only have a problem with google there are some other options. Just use the address bar:
"Search in the address field
Just type a query into the address field and press Enter — simple. Opera distinguishes between web addresses and search queries."
http://www.opera.com/browser/tutorials/intro/browse/#search
Greater even is to set up customized searches using the preferences: search > manage your search engines.
With a single letter (or two) preceding your search entry, you instruct opera to use the defined search engine for that search.

Oh, I understand the problem ... Opera is positioning the cursor according to where it thinks the text should be (by upscaling the standard size) instead of where it actually is. This would only happen when typing inside a page (such as www.google.com or right here) and not in the address field or search field, since Zoom doesn't apply to UI elements but only to pages. But it would depend on the font being used on that page, in some fonts you might actually end up on the short side ...
@ lopera - yeah, sorry - perhaps I did not explain things as clearly as i could! I'm on the latest version of Opera (just recently installed it): 11.51
@ sgunhouse - glad you are on my wavelength! Yes, that's the problem I'm having.
Generally speaking , we all know what it's like.... Over the years we develop our own ways of working and we get quite used to them. I like the way I do things and would rather not change to another method. When I search, I open a new tab, am presented with the google homepage, and then type whatever I'm going to search into the main search field (the one in the cente of the page). Would rather not use the box in the top right of the screen... It's strange, because my previous version of Opera did not do this....
*****UPDATE*****
I managed to find a work around. I turned off Google Instant in the Google Search Settings and there's no problem anymore.... Strange, but I'm happy!
Cheers for the help.

Same issue here on Opera 12 b1065. The cursor position is wrong.
Additionally, i am not able to set the default page zoom to 95% (to prevent horizontal scrollbar appearing on my notebook). The preferences dialog has only rounded values, and using opera:config doesn't work fine because Opera changes my custom setting to one of these stock values.

I have the same annoying problem with text font in google search field when zoom is not 100%. I have set zoom to 130% as default value.
When I type something into search field and than try to repair text somewhere in the middle, cursor is further away than it should be. It is difficult to change text if you can't exactly point with cursor.
For easier understanding I added printscreen of a problem. UPPERCASE text ABCD is added after, look how further away is cursor:
http://www.ampak.net/fotografija/javno/1116.jpg
Same problems in Opera Next 12.00 1116
All other appearance values are default.
---- As MaxDread stated DISABLING GOOGLE DYNAMIC SEARCH SOLVES THE PROBLEM! ----
@SickMF
''Fit to width'' has nothing to do with this problem.

I am having exactly the same problem. Cursor is mispositioned within Google main search page and search results pages when Opera display is zoomed. The mis-positioning gets progressively worse, the longer the further to the right the entry goes. I have not upgraded Opera recently and am still on v11.52. The fault appeared with a change to the layout of Google webpage, and I am convinced that it is down to an interaction between Opera and Google's new code. It is not due to any change Opera has made.
Google is rolling out their new code progressively. The cursor misplacement occurs in google.co.nz, but not in the maori version of that domain, which presumably has had a lower priority for updating. See the two screenshots below, which clearly show the different placing of the cursor after typing the search term.

I have tried the various things suggested - turning off javascipt for that page, turning off instant search, unticking 'Fit to Width' and it makes no difference.
Hopefully someone with more technical expertise than me can get to the bottom of this - it is most annoying.

You have to reload the page after disabling javascript in site preferences.

Well, for the record, the problem returned for me and is still happening now. Regardless of whether I have instant search on or off in google settings, I still get the problem now.
A pain in the bum, but I'm just learning to live with it..... OTOH, if any solutions are found I would love to hear about them.
As for disabling javascript - I guess I could give that a go. But presumably there would be a downside to this?

Not if you do it using site preferences.
In fact, there is an upside.
Those useless page preview popups will no longer appear on Google search result pages.

Thanks for that. It has done the trick and solved the cursor problem.
But (there had to be a but.....!)
Now when I click on my home page/new tab button and it opens a fresh new Google page, the cursor does not automatically start flashing in the search field. Instead, I have to click in the search field before typing. Don't think I can cope with that. In fact, it is more annoying than the original problem. Do you know if there is a way around it?
Thanks for all the help.

Just press the Tab key to give focus to the search field.

After a lot of fiddling, I have found another solution. Change your home page or Google bookmark to http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0
If you change the value of 'complete' in the above link to 1, the cursor error comes back. Applies to google.com too.
This substantiates my theory that it is a coding change introduced by Google rather than anything to do with the version of Opera you are running.
I can confirm disabling javascript also works - I thought I had refreshed the page, but obviously not. However, using the revised link keeps other javascript effects such as the preview popups while avoiding the misplaced cursor.
This solution may not be a permanent one - it seems to be a 'previous version' link, but previous version inevitably changes as other changes are brought in. I'm using it for the time being, and hope Google improve their javascript.
