Opera 8.50 for Series 60 - available next week

Opera will be releasing a new version of the Series 60 browser in the coming week. The version number of this release will be 8.50, and will be in alignment with the Opera 8.50 desktop rendering engine. The browser is in the final stages at this moment.

This release was planned for end of October, and is very close to being ready. We are at the moment working on some final touches before releasing it next week.

This release will naturally address known bugs to date from previous versions, as well as having some new features, like password manager, new image mode, customisable shortcut keys and more. It will also be available in more languages.

We will post more information here when it's released.

The release was planned end of October. If you check your dates you would see that we are past that date now.!!!:wizard:

News update:

Dear Opera forum users
We were planning to release the new Opera S60 8.5 build already today, as we have it ready and eager to get it out. However, due to several other announcements this week from Opera, the new release date will be Monday 14th. So, I hope you have the patience to wait over the weekend for some new goodies

Just to confirm:
- Opera 8.5 will work with both N90 and N70
- Opera 8.5 will be a free upgrade

Have a nice weekend

These kinds of comments are exactly why software developers hesitate to give out planned release dates. If they happen to miss them there's nothing but bitching about it!

Try capturing the URL for the actual download from the mirror site, e.g.

http://www.fastmirrors.org/pub/opera/series60/2.x/800/emea/opera_s60_800_EMEA_70s_20.sis

You might 800 appearing a couple of times. I think that stands for version 8.00, and the equivalent text for 8.50 could be 850.

BTW if you find 8.50 you will notice that a) it rocks, and b) it provides total, 100%, fabulous support for the N70.

GO OPERA!!!

All over the place? Such as?

It's nowhere to be found on any opera.com site that I can find, and they can hardly announce something before it's ready.

If you check this post you will see that it is ready and that they just had not time to announce it. However it would seem that it is published elsewhere. Anyways, dont worry about it. I am sure they have their reasons as to why they do things.

I have never seen links removed from the forums. It happens very often that builds are posted to the FTP servers before their official release. Just treat this build as a Release Candidate and we will be fine

I've just tried it in Yahoo and a couple of other forms and line feed seems to work fine.

Just want to say a massive cheers to the whole Opera team for taking on board all the feedback, and making a browser that is simply great - I don't think I've used it to its full extent yet, but what I have seen is a HUGE improvement, and better than any mobile browser I've seen. Cheers!

If any of you administrates a group on yahoogroups please try and check if the button to approve new users works for you. It doesn't for me.

PS: I tested more and the conclusion is: it doesn't work with Javascript on, it works when Javascript is off.

Could you please upload a screenshot (to be made with fxplorer, freeware, see www.gosymbian.com ) showing opera 8.50 running on N90's high res screen. I am very exited to see it. The high res should allow to see a lot more of information on the screen.

If this is working properly it will be the reason to buy N90 as quick as possible (and Opera too)!

Thanks in advance

Incase anyone is wondering these images haven't been enlarged, they are straight from the Nokia N90.

All of these images are using 100% zoom except one of them which is using 150% zoom just to show the feature on the N90.

Thanks, you are very very kind to answer my request so promptly.

I am deeply impressed. This is fantastic software on equally fantastic hardware! These pics are going to sell nokia N90 with Opera to me, and perhaps some other persons.

Opera should advertise these pics or similar.

BTW: You mentioned a zoom mode and one of the pics is in 150% zoom in. Is there even a zoom out, too? Obviously zooming out could quickly result in fonts unreadable small, but some degree of zoom out might be helpful sometimes. Is there a zoom out option?

Thanks again for Your effort.

wow! opera on the n90 looks surely impressive - a lot better then on my 6630. the phone is much too heavy for me though.

i like the n70 a lot but wonder why they used this shity low-res screen again. resolution-wise nokia hasn't changed anything on smartphones for 1.5 years. 320x240 should be the standard by now.

@opera developers
i'm sure it's a great new version. unfortunately i couldn't test it because i already trialed two weeks with the old version. i'll get a license for this one.

i have two wishes for the next release: a small media player that allows us to listen to shoutcast streams (inbuilt realplayer is useless) and the possibility to sync bookmarks with the desktop opera.

No matter that I've set up the default APN to use for Opera - it allways re-asks which one to use. Why?
The same was with Opera v8.0 too...
