Gmail has become incredibly Slow in Opera 8.5
Over the course of the last week it has become very difficult for me to get into Gmail using Opera 8.5I just get the screen of eternal waiting....
Internet Explorer doesn't seem to have this problem.
I couldn't get the page to load completely until I realised it was a User.js file preventing it. I have since stopped using User.js files coz I think they interfere with a lot of things and I'm never sure where the problems lies when I encounter oddities. Is it poor web design, is it Opera not functioning properly, is it a User.js file? One of these days I'll learn to write my own.

Any ideas on how to fix?
Thanks
Try making changes in your ua.ini. Change all the gmail entries to =4. This worked for me.

If they did then the problems won't happen.This may be a Gmail issue, but it's also true that Opera has had persistent Gmail troubles, while Firefox works more or less flawlessly with Gmail, which is why this longtime (paid) user of Opera has reluctantly abandoned it.
You really should complain to GMail about this.

GMail (and other Google AJAX apps, including Google Maps) causes the entire system to become unresponsive when loaded in Opera. However, it's not loading my CPU, and it's not swapping. It's just slowing down the entire system.
In addition, Google's AJAX apps have begun causing Opera crashes after a few hours. Opera will give a "The instruction (whatever) has referenced memory at (whatever really low address). The memory could not be "written"." I'm fairly sure it's GMail, as switching GMail to basic mode clears up the poor performance and the instability.

I use an AJAX based app called Kayako eSupport - the first few times you load the ticket list it's snappy but it slowly degrades up to the point where it just wont load at all in Opera 9 (haven't tested with 8).

The same problem persists with Opera8 too. First it was ActiveX and now it is this. I dont think complainingto Google would help matters. It works in FireFox and it works in IE, Netscape and Mozilla do not have a problem either. Safari has no issues, it is only Opera that has issues, so i guess Opera should do something about it..

I'm going to attempt to install a parallel 8.02 install, and see if it's affected, as that's a known good version.
If 8.02 is also affected, it's something Google did. If it isn't, it's something Opera did.
EDIT: IN PRELIMINARY TESTING, OPERA 8.02 IS NOT AFFECTED BY THESE PROBLEMS.
I am going to attempt testing with a fresh 8.51 install, as well, so that I can see if it's variations in installs, or variations in versions.
EDIT 2: IN PRELIMINARY TESTING, OPERA 8.51 (under the same conditions as Opera 8.02 - fresh install, first site being gmail.google.com) HAD SLIGHT FREEZES!
I think we can chalk this one up as a regression.
EDIT 3: TjL suggested that I try it in Opera 9.0 TP1. So I did. Slightly faster than Opera 8.51, but still freezy.
OPERA! PLEASE FIX THIS!
I'm reverting to 8.02 (after all, if 8.5 weren't free, 8.51 would be called 8.04...)
EDIT 4: In further testing, it appears that it's not actually 8.02 related. First, Opera 8.02 did the same thing when unleashed on my 8.51 profile.
Erasing all Google cookies and setting it to ID as Internet Explorer clears the freezing right up.

identify as mozilla
i gaurentee this will work.
this is vivid proof that google is anti-opera
its not a compatability issue, rather i believe there is some coding somewhere deep within gmail's source that purposefully blocks opera headers at random times. i think this because google adsense is paying up to $1 american to people who link to firefox download and that person downloads firefox. google is teaming with firefox to attempt to remove opera and IE from the picture. 8@$74RD5.
on a seperate but somewhat related note- on ebay, the drop down menus for 'actions' like contact seller, mark item unpaid and the likes in 'my ebay' seem to only work for me when i'm set to identify as opera.....
weird.
google and ebay seem to be taking sides.... could be just me though.

Reading this post I've checked if stickies.js interferes with Gmail, and... yes, poorly it does. I apologize for this bug and for eventual hassle it has given, but I don't know which is the cause: if someone figures out how to fix it please email me (or post in this thread, or reply to this post) and I'll apply the suggestion, thanks.
PS for trollop: you can avoid completely stopping using user scripts, as I know there's a bookmarklet for turning them on/off on the fly ;)

i always identify my Opera AS Opera. i DO however set my ua.ini file as:
gmail.com=1
gmail.google.com=1
mail.google.com=1
last night i followed someone's advice to identify as IE. it worked...up until the 2nd time i accessed Gmail (which was this morning)
i THEN identified it as Mozilla, & it ALSO worked only the first time. then, no matter what i did, Gmail kept hanging with the "Loading..." text at the top.
Now i can access it whenever when i 'empty the disk cache' in Preferences/Advanced/History beforehand.
