+1 for Flash. Lots of popular web sites use embedded Flash video and are essentially crippled at the moment using Opera Mobile and Mini.

Won't HTML5 negate the need for a plugin anyway?

Maybe in two or three years, yes. But right now there are millions of sites with Flash content that's not accessible. And older Symbian devices may not be able to process HTML5 content if and when it becomes widely used.

Flash Support for Symbian Phones can be a huge market plan for Opera Mobile.

Please be reminded that not all people own an android device and with that said. I hope that you will not disregard the symbian interface for it can also support flash contents.

If the crappy nokia browser can make its flash content available through its browser, then why can't the Opera Mobile Browser be equipped with the same function?

Agreed. It's not like Flash is suddenly gone from the Internet. It'll take time for HTML5 to become widely used and standard on web pages. And what about older web pages? It doesn't make sense to not include it now while Flash is still so ubiquitous.

Anyone know what the minimum amount of RAM is needed for a mobile device to play flash content without crashing? But if memory was an issue, then a Nokia E71 with 128MB probably wouldn't be able to play YouTube in its browser confused

My i8910 phone is three years old and has 256MB, with about 145MB remaining while it's running, and approximately 127MB after launching Opera Mobile.

Excuse me: Adobe has discontinued Flash Player for Mobiles recently - http://news.softpedia.com/news/Adobe-Officially-Kills-Flash-on-Mobile-Browsers-Chooses-HTML5-Instead-233446.shtml

That means Adobe won't be developing Flash for the mobile platforms. Also Flash Lite was discontinued quite earlier.

-1, use HTML5 videos for your Symbian/S60 - but don't worry you are not alone - The Android users will also have to use HTML5 videos soon; they can't stay with an old version of Flash Player forever.

Hi, yes I read that too. Although I think it might still be possible to include whatever Flash Lite version exists now into Opera Mobile; at least give it some functionality of Flash now as opposed to nothing at all.

My concern is the hardware requirements of HTML5 being beyond the capabilities of S60v5 and other recent smartphones. Unless there's an HTML5 Lite...

That's much effort for a little gain. If Wikipedia is right, Flash Lite 4.0 is the latest version - but it was released in 2010. Also, Opera's main target is the Android OS.
Adobe has admitted that Steve Jobs was right and HTML5 is right for the mobiles. It's a couple of months remaining when developers would be switching to HTML5.

Yeah... But it wasn't just about what Steve Jobs said. Of course it didn't make business sense for him to support Adobe, and protecting Apple at all costs is what mattered to him.

Many others over the years have wished for the end of Flash and its crashes and resource hogging—and they are probably right (although Adobe have being dragging their feet at fixing the problems with Flash). Maybe it's just that the time has come for Adobe's reign of media enhancement for the web is near the end and for something else to take its place, and mobile technology accelerated the change.

Still, is it so much effort to incorporated some Flash function into Opera Mobile now?

Sure it isn't but it isn't of any use - by the time Opera Mobile team prepares Flash Lite on Symbian/S60, the webmasters would be targeting HTML5 videos.

Though the transition to HTML5 Video will take some time - and it will also decide who won the fight: Microsoft and Apple (H.264 supporters) or Chrome, Opera and Firefox [WebM supporters (with Google being developer)]. Hopefully WebM wins. yes

But will three-year-old Symbian devices be powerful enough to render HTML5? Can Opera Mobile use hardware acceleration of the phone?

If Nokia was kind enough to include OpenGL ES 2.0 support - then it is possible. But I am not sure whether Opera Mobile supports hardware acceleration on Symbian.

I cannot say anything for sure but your browsing experience with HTML5 videos should be better than if Opera Mobile used Flash Lite.

Flash is bad. That may be stupid but it's true. Firstly, Nokia phones doesn't have sufficient amount of ram to run flash player. Secondly, Adobe doens't present an Symbian Flash Player. Opera, therefore, isn't be able to support non released product. Thirdly, web is awesome but flash. smile Death of Flash on Mobile will bring real web experience via HTML5. People should be patient.

Then how are Nokia phones like the C5 (Symbian OS 9.3 and 128 MB RAM) and E71 (with Symbian OS 9.2 and 128 MB RAM) able to play Flash video natively in their own browsers but Opera Mobile is not on my i8910 phone with Symbian OS 9.4 and 256 MB RAM?

e.g.

my E7 plays fantastic flash videos on the native browser. and the native browser on my device isn't what i'd call crappy at all. It's got tabbed browsing, multitouch pinch to zoom, kinetic scrolling, full ecma scripting/css support. it uses hardware acceleration, my device has a dedicated broadcom graphics accelerator (GPU). seems like nokia has finally got things right. symbian anna is awsome. to be honest, i hardly use opera mobile since i got this phone. i use opera mini on 2.5G, and the native browser on 3.5G/WiFi.
I've been using opera since my teens, i'm 27 now. i seriously don't want to stop using opera mobile. Devs, please see if you can get flash lite, and make opera mobile as resource efficient as the E7 browser, if not better. i'm sure you can do it. you guys are way better than nokia. :-)

Firefox mobile 9 has html5 score of 313 and opera mobile 11.5 has 286
opera mobile has to bring in more features before firefox mobile takes over!!
