Terrible rendering of Asian characters
Hello to everyone,Just decided to switch to Opera a week ago, but I am experiencing a very bad issue with Asian languages character rendering (specifically Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Characters always look bold and are poorly aligned with the rest of the text (for example, if a site title is in Chinese, it appears half hidden in the tabs as it is aligned a few pixel upper than normal text).
Is this a know issue? Is there someway to fix that?

It indeed does. Setting to Japanese improves also Chinese text and viceversa.
Though I'd rather not have my system language set to either of those. Is there a workaround for this?

I am using Mac Os X 10.6.3, by the way.

In Windows XP, you have to enable east asian language support.
Control panel --> regional language and settings -->languages.
There are 2 check boxes
Install files for complex script (left to right) including Thai.
Install files for east asian languages
After checking both boxes, display problems are solved.
I do not know how to make it working in Mac OS.

Thanks for the tip, but Asian Language support is built-in in Mac OS X and I don't have to enable anything. Besides, it works wonders in anything but Opera.
Daniel seems to be aware of what kind of problem I am encountering. And I eagerly await for any known solution, as I would like to switch to Opera, but this issue is a huge turn off for me.

Yes, Daniel is the right guy, he is testing opera in mac

I am having the same problem, but ONLY on websites that is in primarily not an Asian language.
(for example)
My problem was noticeable on Facebook, with Japanese fonts. Kana is fine, but the Kanji are all bold and pretty difficult to read.
The funny thing was, when I changed the Facebook language to Japanese (the option at the footer), there was no rendering problem whatsoever.
Tested this out and visited a bunch of other Japanese websites and had no problem, but on English websites with a mix of both languages, there the problem was again!

This is because when you set Facebook to be in Japanese, then they add a lang=ja attribute to the document. Which gives Opera’s font switching the information it needs to pick the correct font. Sites that either contain language information or information about what font to use (a font that looks good in Japanese) will never be a problem.
When you set Opera’s language to Japanese (well, the system language on Macs) then we will default to a font that looks better in Japanese than in English. So you will get the opposite problem.
Had Facebook surrounded the Japanese content in a tag with the lang=ja attribute then this would not have been a problem. You can see my rants about the lack of content language identification on social networks on my public Facebook and Twitter profiles.
I have similar problem with Chinese character in Opera 11.6 on Mac OS X Lion. For example web page http://www.mdbg.net (English - Chinese dictionary) , there left menu has strange rendering. When we write Chinese text into text box so I can see only bottom part of text.
For example web page http://baidu.com/ doesn't have problem. Google translator also has problem, when I want to translate words nihao from Chinese to English so below Google writes "Did you mean: 你好" but these Chinese words has problem, underline is very far from words.
I found next problem in Opera for Mac. OSX Lion supports dictionary through every application but Opera don't support this function. Double click with three finger opens tooltip with dictionary.

Definitely an annoying issue. Like everyone else, I am still seeing this issue on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2, and the latest Opera/Opera Next versions.
I have reported it a while back (DSK-344401), and I too hope for it to be fixed. (this bug is non existent in other browsers on Mac - no matter what language is set as the default OS language).
Note: Issues also happen with special characters (ex: ★)
