Opera keeps getting very slow and sluggish....
Hi allI developed a problem recently whereby web pages are really sluggish and slow. This effects basic things like scrolling, typing etc. etc. Strangely, it is not a consistent problem. It comes and goes, sometimes quite quickly. Cannot think of any changes that are occurring to make this happen.
The problem started a few days ago and I've tried various things...:
1. I updated Opera from 10.63 to the latest release (11.51).
2. I have used CCleaner to get rid of all unnecessary files, etc.
3. I defragged (using jkdefrag).
4. I cleared a bit of space on my 15gb OS partition (there was only 1gb of free space previously, now there's around 2.5gb).
None of these things seem to be helping as the problem still occurs. It has been happening over the last 15 minutes, so I opened Internet Explorer beside Opera. When things are sluggish in Opera they are working fine in IE.
I should add that we started a new contract on our phone line in the last few days too. The phone line rental itself changed company. The ISP is still the same, although we rolled onto a new contract with them.
Tough to say what the issue is, and whether it lies with my connection, my PC, Opera itself, etc. etc. So I wondered if any of the helpful souls around here might be able to help? If nothing else, would be really helpful to determine whether Opera is at the cause of the problem and whether changing a setting somewhere could be the answer.....
If more info is needed please ask away.
Many thanks
Max
Hi
I've experienced some of the same problems you mention. When scrolling the mouse wheel, some pages is lagging or sluggish. This works fine when using IE9.
Then I have the problem sometimes that Opera won't shut down completely when I exit the browser. I have to use the task manager to stop Opera running.
I have also had some problem from time to time with Opera suddenly hanging up when browsing internet.
None of the above problems is there when using IE9.
I find it strange that the developers of Opera have not fixed these and other bugs. When reading the forum it looks like many of the same problems have been there for years now.
Windows Vista 32 bit
4 gb ram
5 mb internet connection

Thanks for the input.
Me, I've been a happy user of Opera for a few years now and never experienced this problem. So who knows what's going on! Seems a strange coincidence that the problems have occurred so close to the time my Internet connection has been renewed. But if it was due to the internet connection alone, I cannot see why IE is not experiencing the same problem.
I love Opera and want to continue using it. So I really hope someone can help me get to the bottom of what is causing the problem. Otherwise, I'll have to try another browser I guess....and if the problem goes away I suppose I now where to point the finger. That being said, even with the finger pointed at Opera, hopefully a settings change or two would help to remedy it so that I can continue using the browser.
Fingers crossed!

i have to agree...for me, it seems like it happened from 11.50->11.51
freezes a lot and sluggish...problems not usually a problem for opera
hopefully a new version that fixes it comes out soon

I've been noticing this as well using Opera 11.51 on Windows 7 64.
Definitely noticing that Opera rarely exits correctly. The windows disappear, but process explorer says it's still there and it won't start up against until a nuke the old one.

yep...11.51 on windows 7 64 bit for me as well. it's very sad - i'm posting this with chrome right now

hope there's a fix soon...i terribly miss my super fast browsing experience that i'm used to with opera
It is my request that you all try a clean-install of Opera 11.51. If a clean-install doesn't correct any of your problems please try Opera 12.00 pre-alpha or the updated Ragnarök Labs build.
From the above 3 options, one of them is definitely going to resolve almost all your problems. If any minor problems remain, what's thew forum for?

Sometimes Opera gets 'sluggish' when it was fine the week before.
Nothing changed but maybe it could be a recent Update to the the browser.js that Opera does now and then.
Its happened before that something caused it to slowdown and then the next update its "fixed", but seems this latest update is "slowing?" it somehow?
