User interface font changed after update - how can I change UI to my preference?

Hi there.

After updating Opera 11.50 to 11.51 (Build 1087) the font of the user interface totally changed. It is bigger, thinner and edgier, or short: Really ugly in comparison to the system standard font "DejaVu", which Opera did use up to version 11.50. (I think this new font is CRT optimized too, but I am using only TFT...)

Strange however, at opera:config, sections "Fonts" and "CSS Generic Font Family" too, DejaVu in its different versions is set almost everywhere.

But I have this new font in menus, tabs, address bar, searches, tooltips, panels, email, bookmarks manager etc. Yet most web content seems to look no different than before, apart from text inside input fields where I also have the new ugly font.
Which font should I see in normal posts at the Opera forums? I am not sure if it was the same (small and edgy) font which I see now everywhere.

Updating Opera is always quite an adventure. What would change now? Of course they never include everything in the changelogs...

Under Preferences > Advanced > Fonts, look under the various "Browser ..." items: Browser toolbars, Browser menus, etc.

Nooo - it's all the same, it's all set to DejaVu fonts and if I open the "Choose" dialog, it even says "(default) DejaVu ..." every time.

But I noticed that this problem is related to the nature of the OS, which is a rather old custom built Debain based system (with Gnome desktop 2.24.1). After updating Opera on another PC that is running a recent Ubuntu version there are no problems with fonts at all.

Strange however, up to Opera version 11.50 all was fine on the old system too.

Why can't Opera 11.51 access the system fonts anymore and is there something I can do about it?

What version of freetype does your old system have? Possibly you need to update to a newer version ...
