Saudi Arabia: the only country in world that bans women from driving

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world
that bans women – both Saudi and foreign
– from driving. The prohibition forces
families to hire live-in drivers, and those
who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on
male relatives to drive them to work, school,
shopping or the doctor.
There are no written laws that restrict
women from driving. Rather, the ban is
rooted in conservative traditions and
religious views that hold giving freedom of
movement to women would make them
vulnerable to sins.(this is the funny part)
Activists say the religious justification is
irrelevant.

Well, maybe women don't want to drive, it's not so much better to have a chauffeur? And much more practical for shopping...

the view that women are vunerable to sin if allowed free movement is really inovative thinking. It should be adopted in the scotland. That way Mr. howie w'd have a lot of driving to do. If you know what i mean bigsmile

Saudi Arabia a Disney creation? Hhhm, maybe not the best parallel considering it is a most blatantly non-democratic country living in the mental dark ages and yet feted by the West.

What was the point of this post, precisely?

From what I understand, women in Saudi Arabia are allowed to vote.

The point of this thread is that women in Saudi Arabia aren't allowed to drive, can't you read?
And my point being that I don't give a damn about that, but I'm against sissies that beats women. For whatever reason.

Quite bemusing to have the vote but not drive a car. Maybe they think that less dangerous?

Befor women got the vote here the three groups without it were them, criminals and lunatics. Then they gavce women the vote and left the other two out. Maybe the Saudis are still pondering on that lack of a wider remit.....

Things are looking up, however!

RIYADH, Saudi Arab — Saudi King Abdullah has overturned a court ruling sentencing a Saudi woman to be lashed 10 times for defying the kingdom's ban on female drivers, a government official said Wednesday.

The man must be a raving liberal.
