MSDN & Windows Live ID (Login)

Hope this is the right place for this question...

With Opera (11.51, duno about earlier versions) I encounter some strange problems on sides that rely on a windows live ID login.
Either if I become redirected to the live ID login side and submitted my account data the LoginSide hangs up in an endless cycle of
beeing reloaded instead of redirecting me to the previous side to wich I wanted to be loged in to. Or equally worse, I get back to that
side, it is recognizing me as beeing signed in but keeps throwing me back to the Login Side whenever I click a link that is directed to a
side wich may utilize my login state.

As an example,
I visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx and Sign in there, everything ok so far - but then clicking on Forum will result in opening
the Live ID Login Screen with an error message telling me that the side may not be a member of the live network or is experiencing problems.
Without beeing signed in the link works flawless and in IE (what a wonder - sigh) I can verify that the link works with beeing signed in...
And to add on the list - if I loged in and then wanted to sign out - in Opera it is telling me that I can't sign out because my browser is blocking cookies, so ok - enabling Accept All Cookies solves that problem (well, even if I don't like it - setting it as a side specific option doesn't solve that, as it seem that there are sides involved I don't know about and so can't set them explicitly) BUT not the main failure described above.

Any Suggestions?

Hi,

I'm having exactly the same issue for a long time. I've tried various things like: masquerading as IE, turning sending of referrer information off, logging off and on again, clearing cookies – all to no avail. The interesting thing is that sometimes this problem disappears for a while – one time you can't open a page, the other time you can.

Same here. I hate that I am having to load another browser to get to these sites.

This has been going on a LONG time, unfortunately.

The only workaround I've found--and this will only last for a while before it needs to be repeated--is:

1) Go to www.microsoft.com
2) Edit Site Prefs
3) Delete all cookies for the site.

At this point, you'll be able to visit any MS forum, or other MS site that would otherwise hang, and actually be able to load the page. Further, you'll even be able to sign in and post. But like I said, it doesn't last indefinitely.

Interesting - what are your cookie settings? This sort of log-in-and-redirect-between-sites dance often requires accepting cookies that Opera considers third-party.

I just have the normal "Accept cookies" across all sites. I never limit them.

This turns out to be a known bug in Opera - there are some limitations on the size of data sent in cookies that are different from other browsers. We are changing those limits, so it should start working in Opera 12.

For those who haven't noticed it, this is now fixed in Opera 12 build 1174.

A small part of the changelog says-

"CORE-41627 Domain in webstorage and web sql dbs truncated
CORE-41701 RAGE map viewer renders incorrectly
CORE-41937 MSDN - Infinite log in loop because Opera drops cookies
CORE-41952 Crash when loading thepokerbay.org"

Happy testing. up yes

If anyone still sees this problem after the fix (i.e. in recent 11.60 and 12 preview builds), try clearing cookies. You may get stuck in a corrupted state.

I'm having somehow the same problem.
I'm building a test site, to check form authentication in asp.net and i'm sending with the authentication cookie a serialized class (base64 of course and url encoded) in order to have some user data immidiately. Opera cannot submit back the data, so the pages after authenication stops working (can not do any form posts). Works on all other browsers i have tried (IE,Mozzila, chrome). when i delete the cookie from tools--> options...etc,
all work ok. but i think that is not an issue of big cookie data, but some characters somehow are not accepted, because if i send some arbitrary large data, all work ok
oops, and Happy new year!! smile
cookie data is :

Hello Opera team,
I request Opera team to add the the fix "CORE-41937 MSDN - Infinite log in loop because Opera drops cookies" into Opera 11.62 because Opera 12.00 release is being delayed and delayed - and it's really frustating to install Opera Next just for browsing TechNet/MSDN forums.

I concur (for 11.65 now...) as this is highly aggravating and I can't rely on these Opera 12 "Beta"s to actually work reliably.

Right. Contrary to what I thought above, this is not fixed in 11.6x (it seems to have stopped just short of the core release that had this fix included).

I'm not among the ppl deciding what patches to put into 11.6x. I would site patch it if I could :-/

^^ If an security exploit in found in Opera, 11.6x will be given a security update within 48 hours (or maybe less); but if a popular site (yes, TechNet and MSDN combined do have a lot of users) breaks due to a Core bug in Opera which is already fixed in the Opera Next branch; then nobody at Opera (talking about the ones involved with which patches to put into a specific release) bothers to get it to the stable branch users as well. sad
